Makita DUN500WZ battery hedge trimmer review
In this video I give my initial thoughts on the makita DUN500WZ hedge trimmer. The unboxing part of this video was filmed in February 2023, and the voiceover for the end of the video when hedge trimming was recorded in February 2024.

This is garden GOALS!!! 😮😮😮❤❤❤
Just planted a hedge of lonicera last week I hope to have a hedge like this after 5 or 6Years
Nice review...I bought the cheaper model about $175.00...it doesn't have all the electronics and doesn't shut off...just trigger and go...I love it!
ive read somehwere that they struggle with beech
Thanks for the straight forward review 👍🏼
What twine do you use mate?
Hi thanks for the video 👍 how long does the battery last?
Location? It's beautiful
Hi I loved your van tour straight clean set up. Question what security have you got on the van to protect it from van theft which is a massive issue in the uk
What is the part number of the pin you ordered, had a look on spare parts and I couldn’t find it
Hi, do you work with a trailer? Greetings from Belgium
Wow! Love it!
what do you charge for hand clipping or using a machine?
Great video! What grease do you use? Thanks
What’s the water and chemical for
Did you register for 3 years extended warranty? Love mine but its been back to Makita 7 times as after a year or so the blade lock kept slipping when used in a horizontal direction.... really annoying but to be fair to Makita they did sort it eventually but my god it took way too many returns. I put a grease nipple on mine for easy refills
This video sold the product for me, thanks
The switching itself off so quickly would drive me mad. I presume that’s so they squeeze every drop out of the battery,
Is it just me or do the hedges seem really happy once they've had their hair cut lol
Great video. I love my makita hedge trimmer. It's been great.
Great to hear its light weight. I got the Makita XGT powerhead with articulating hedge trimmer attachment. Maybe my strength isn't good but it's very heavy. Cuts really well otherwise. I get the same 2 second cut out of not holding safety in. 100% agree it's very annoying. I'm using a Velcro strap on safety button from time to time.
I had the same issue, the standard hedge trimmer attachment is very heavy... They brought out a new version a few months ago which is lightweight it's much nicer...
Great review Will👍🏼
Thanks mate 🙂
Having started a new business I needed some inspiration on how to organise my van and this is a massive help, really appreciated
Great to hear! Thank you 😊
So relaxing to watch this🌱
Basically similar to what Stihl pioneered with their HLA 65, a decade or more ago. Wonder if it’ll last as long and be as reliable?
There’s similarities, I believe the stihl HLA has a strokes per minute blade speed of 3000, the makita can go to 4400, which for me makes a massive difference when clipping plants with smaller leaves (like Buxus) as it doesn’t tear as many leaves, which leaves a cleaner finish 🙂
That’s true👍@@ExcelsisGardens
I’m 1 year in too, whether it’s as reliable time will tell 🙂
Great video, is a short wheel base or medium?
Thank you, it’s the medium wheel base 🙂
Nice one Will, blade speed is ridiculous! 👍
Crazy speed! Comes in at 4400 stokes per minute I believe.. I saw Kress possibly doing a hedge trimmer at 5000 😱
@@ExcelsisGardens😮
The xgt 40v Makita stuff the blade speed is 5000, it's a shame they don't do a 40v version start of this hedge trimmer... I actually contacted Makita directly to ask if they had any plans to make one and they said they don't... I'll probably end up getting it either way and just get a 18-volt battery
Fantastic!
Thanks mate 🙏
How long does one of the 5amh batteries last? Great video might invest as it would be alot lighter than my long reach Stihl and i already have makita batteries
Super hard to put a time frame on it, as it depends on how trigger happy you are, how thick the hedge is etc.. but definitely doesn’t last as long as my bli200 husqvarna batteries on there hedge trimmers. But then cost is massively different, makita batteries about £75 each compared to £300 husqvarna (I don’t use stihl so couldn’t compare them). I’ll make a video of a hedge trim, let you know how long it takes and how much charge it uses 🙂
Thanks that is a massive difference in price.
I love mine, use it most days. I agree the grease does need topping up regularly and yes I've replaced the adjustment pin a couple of times - but overall I really do like it👍
Great to hear! The good news is I find parts are fairly cheap compared to other brands if there are issues. It’s been my most used hedge trimmer of 2023, lightweight with a great blade speed 👌
very nice mate i used to put some electical tape on the handle to stop it turning off so fast 👍👍👍
Great idea! Comfier than a cable tie I’d imagine.. it’s just crazy how quick it cuts out
Incredible work! What shears/ trimmers do you use? And as a side question, do you spray the box with any products in relation to box moth and blight? Many thanks ...
I use niwaki topiary shears/okatsune 217s and darlacs for shears.. makita battery trimmers for hedgers mainly 🙂 topbuxus does some great products, Xentari for caterpillar and Healthmix to help prevent blight.. Buxus loves a liquid seaweed feed too, hope that helps 🙂
Many thanks 😊
very nice as allways mate
Thanks buddy 👊
Gtreat idea, well done 👍
Thanks mate 🙏
What is the name of this plant??
Great video Will✂️🍃👍🏼
Thanks mate, hope you had a good Christmas and new year 🙂
Brother, I’m scrolling through these videos and LOVING the worship bangers, waiting for some Housefires. I’m starting as a self employed gardener in February, and loving the inspiration from here
Thank you 🙏
Excellent review of your kit. Nice range of equipment. Cheers Steve
Thanks mate 🙂
Happy new year Will. Some nice kit there. I too have a niwaki addiction. 😂
😂 whenever the niwaki catalogue comes through the door it’s like a shopping list of must haves 😂
@@ExcelsisGardens I agree and when in London I always visit the shop to buy something I don’t need 😀

Nice bit of kit!
Thanks Phil! I’m enjoying your Friday videos so far 👌

Great video! This has given me some good starting points to organising my van. Also don't forget, waste removal can be charged for and is a fantastic way to create more revenue for the same effort. Will stay tuned for more vids! Thanks again
Thanks mate, and waste can definitely be profitable, I charge per tonne bag when I do remove waste. The charge will cover waste disposal, fuel and money for my time. I just find most of the gardens I’m in don’t need waste removed, which is why I’ve gone with a slightly smaller van 🙂 I think if waste removal was a bigger part of what I did, I’d of gone for a slightly bigger van, or add a trailer to this one 🙂
Another lovely job chap! Always nice to see what tools get used. I use the Husqvarna 522HDR75X and 535LK with the extended hedgecutter attachment!
Thanks mate! I haven’t used the Husqvarna with attachments, but have heard very good things about that machine! 👏
Nice job chap!
Thank you 😊
you're using 1000 grit (that Niwaki need, as carbon steel) on Okatsune, who's product whetstone is only 400 grit (as it's Izumo Yasugi steel) - so you're needlessly wearing away your pruners for no good reason...
Thanks for the comment, interestingly Okatsune don’t state on there website the exact steel, on Niwaki they do (hitachi carbon steel) and Niwaki recommend they are sharpened with the #1000 grit stone. I personally haven’t seen any excessive wear in my 4 years of owning them and sharpening them regularly, in fact they still look like they did the day I brought them, though I will look at the okatsune whetstone and give it a go 🙂
@@ExcelsisGardens Okatsune do have on the home page of their website that they use Izumo Yasugi steel. Niwaki now sell the Okatsune whetstone as its more suitable for the Okatsune pruners (they've started stocking as well). Great you haven't noticed any excessive wear yet, but if people want them long term, best to avoid too high a grit with them!
@@magspiesif the Niwasi is 1000 grit and the Okatsune is 400 grit then the Niwasi is over twice as fine.
Great information but could you share how tight the nut needs to be that holds it together. No other person ever mentions the tork specs for the nut. Great video. Thanks. Mike in Alabama
