Corollary channel to "It's Pronounced Trynant" (and the more casual channel "Trynant") where I focus on tabletop gaming rather than video games or miscellany. Most of the videos here relate to hobby board games over collectible card games or miniatures gaming.
Sicily II (Operational Combat Series) Campaign VOD [1] - Intro and Beach Landings
Live solitaire playthrough of the historical wargame Sicily II, part of the Operational Combat Series. In the first part, we explain (some) rules and do some beach landings for the Allies.
As a heads up, this is a very complicated ruleset, and I'm not great at it. There will be mistakes and such.
Done live at www.twitch.tv/trynant
P.S. Whoops haven't uploaded a vid in 4 years let's not talk about it :(

Case Blue + Guderian's Blitzkrieg II Part 02 - Movement Phase Summary
มุมมอง 1.6K7 ปีที่แล้ว
A quick take on how the main movement phase and meat of the turn in Operational Combat Series works. Didn't talk about airplanes and glossed over a lot of stuff but with ~60 pages of rules whatcha gonna do. I'm not too happy about the quality hopefully I can cut down on the sniffling and "umm"'s as time goes on.

Don't HQ units create a detrainable hex on their location? You can draw supply from detrainable hexes, if I recall corretly.
the Bryansk region. You can reach Orel on the first turn.
how do you move the pieces in the center map ? my arms will not be long enough
Boyz, buy poker chips. They shorten this game ( and many others too ) by 1/4. It's impossible to play with flimsy paper money like that......
The fact that you played 4 on this table is amazing!
Tell us about the game not your set up issues
I like all the videos, you did a great job. However, you did not play the Germans opening move very good. On the first turn I am already attacking Bel'yy in hex B24.34 which will open the road for the mobile forces to go in either direction on the tracks leading NE and E.
Yo why the hell are you shitting on ASL's rulebook?
It's really out of love.
Spit V would be a Supermarine Spitfire Mk V, one of the worst variants of the type.
Ah thanks. The abbreviations on all the counters are of stuff frankly beyond me.
Magnificent undertaking!
Absolutely epic layout. I would have to convert my living room to a games room to do this.
I've notice lately that most games that cover case Blue/Edelweiss don't actually show Baku on the map. Europa does, but Simonitch's games don't and several other I glanced at, and neither does this. Bizarre.
Crazy man.
I don't know what's more impressive... the size of this game or all the plexiglass you have on hand!
Did you finish the game?
No man alive has.
The OCS rules are actually not that big of a challenge - precisely because they are well written and not too much minutia. The only part of the rules which can be hard to parse is the Naval stuff - especially landing crafts. Probably because those rules hasn't been subject to as much editorial refinement.
what size are those wooden cubes and where did you get them?
they're the pieces from GMT Games' excellent Dominant Species. Approximately 1/4" or 5/16"
178 turns??!! Lol
Really appreciate the perspective here. Thanks for sharing. I think it does something important in showing some things board games are doing relative to video games, and the reasons that may be the case. It also features a game that's way, way out on the complexity scale compared to a lot of entry level games. That's a nice touch because it illustrates perfectly how far a board game can go in terms of asymmetrical strategy, historical context, and just plain multi-level depth of play. I haven't played this one but I'd love too if I can ever form the bubble in space-time to accomplish it. However, I can totally see why some folks would want to avoid this or (even if they'd love to play it), would never be able to get it to the table. If you're willing (and actually able) to put in the time, and can manage to hook up with people that can see the beauty in this kind of thing, board games like this can offer some truly epic experiences. But yeah, this game is definitely not for everybody.
Are there any tutorials for mere mortals anywhere?
I was lucky enough to play with the same person through the tutorial scenarios of the game. Those taught the game well enough but require willingness to play through scenarios that aren't fully fleshed out (they're still pretty good though!). On the bright side, the tutorial missions are substantially shorter than a full game.
Good channel. Try this on a "smaller" scale (i.e. 2-players first, it's "easier" to find players). Play Labyrinth, a COIN game, heck even ROOT. There are some good examples of asymmetry in game play before arriving at a game like Virgin Queen.
Late reply I know, but I guess I agree. This video is nearing a decade old iirc (it was originally on my videogaming channel), but since then I've done a full play of VQ with six people (it went well!), COINs abounds (I have about every one of them that's published except a couple of expansions), Root multiple times, heck, I'd say the most asymmetric game I've played had to be Vast of all things. I don't like Labyrinth personally over Twilight Struggle for reasons not worth going into in a reply, but it's a good example of asymmetry. Anyways, I think about everything you've mentioned except Labyrinth was out AFTER VQ so here we are :/ But yeah VQ is in the deep end of the pool, though. Harder to get to the table than ever with the great options that are out these days.
@@trynanttabletops8625 I didn't realize how old the video was, but thanks for the reply nonetheless. Glad to hear all of your discoveries since then.
Trynant made 2 mistake in this video: First at 44:28 The Russians do not need to take their option as there are no more Germans who attacked the are still adjacent. Second at 54:41 The Russians would lose his loss first. The Germans do not have any Russians adjacent to them so the rest of the options loss are ignored. The Germans take the hex and may continue move if they have any movement points left.
Thanks for clarifications, and appreciate you being able to catch those errors in such a big video! I'm sure I made plenty of mistakes this playthrough and apologize for that, solitaire of this scale was rough!
Noice
I have played GB2, you have to play the Germans very aggresively to have any chance of getting around Moscow, even then I only got a pyrric victory. Great game, and GB2 I think uses the action rating system really well for the germans, making exploitation and surrounding enjoyable to play. Bad points are counter density (though I like it for that reason) took me a full day just to set up.
Will you be my friend and invite me over for several months so I can play this game with you? I’ll bring beer.
Hell, I'm in!
Sweet. What’s your address? I just need a week to put my affairs in order.
During the combat phase the defending units have the option to defend at 1/4 their defensive strength without expending any SP points correct? In which case the defender can rely on column shifts due to surprise to exhaust the attacker. Just curious.
Even better for the defending units--they can withhold their supplies and defend at 1/2 strength rather than 1/4 (if a defending unit is marked out-of-supply AND doesn't expend SP then their strength is 1/4). Also defending units have a hard limit on how many supply points they'll expend--even if a defending stack is huge it only expends 2 supply tokens (2T) for the whole stack whereas each attacking step of a piece costs a token! In a way even with spending supply points to defend the attacker can become exhausted on resources because of the gap in how much each side spends. Hope that helps.
@@trynanttabletops8625 You've been very helpful thanks! Do you also have Smolensk?
@@georgehiotis Yup! Though not sure when I'll get around to it just yet. Got a bunch of other OCS games and the Battlion Combat Series stuff I want to explore.
Bravo u high?
Really enjoyed watching your play through! Kicking myself for not buying Case Blue when it came out. Have GBII and would love to have both to try and run the campaign.
Awesome! Really want these games....
... had to stop watching bc. of the music.
There are *plenty* of board games with this kind of asymmetry. Both 2-player and multi-player. And I don't believe Virgin Queen is an especially complex game. My World in Flames rule book is 86 pages. These games are not for people who need convincing to be taught the games. It's for players who already them selves in advance have accepted that they are interested in playing this game and willing to do the work to learn it.
OCS is a fun game system, however it does have a few drawbacks. HQ's acting as engineers, is problematic, and one supply marker representing both fuel and ammo is problematic because everything gets used as fuel as all the ammo deprived artillery tags along.
I really noticed how starved artillery is in OCS, for sure. With HQ, do you mean that them doubling as engineers is problematic or the lack of engineer pieces complementing HQ is problematic?
HQ's acting as engineers in OCS stems from an abuse issue going as far back in wargaming as the 80's. The Europa game series used several types of engineer units in its unit inventories in fairly large quantities. These engineer units were often abused by players as cannon fodder, to the annoyance of many who would later be involved in the creation of OCS. As a result, although engineers do exist to a very limited degree in OCS they are stripped of their abilities and HQ's do the job instead. I wouldn't mind so much except for the fact that HQ's have their own laundry list of things they need to otherwise be doing AND I don't care to be moving an HQ out of the line of supply in order to send it to locations for building stuff or in the front line to able units to attack across rivers etc. Like any cult following however the mere mention of this problem creates some of its own so I digress.
Another enjoyable video. With virtually no Zone of Control, it's vital to garrison your critical rear areas.
Love your topic and video. I see you printed out the Mech Division Breakdown cards I created. Awesome game combo map layout. Great individual Off Map Airfield Holding Boxes.
Thank you for watching, and thank you for the breakdown cards! The off map airfield boxes were just a photocopy of the back of the OCS rulebook and a plentiful use of scissors :)
Please hire another cameraman, with les ADD. End of game at 8:10, is a bit misleading, each game lasted like forever.
come to the dark side....give in

How far down the rabbit hole are you now?
I did a solo play of Case Blue and Guderian's Blitzkrieg II on this channel recently. I'd say pretty darn far ;_;
Trynant Tabletops lol. Yeah... that's deep.. I'm just getting into COIN games and heavy Euro games. I seriously don't know where these gems have been all my life.. Happy gaming...
You sound almost exactly like the old reviewer Spoony and it's freaking me out
I looked him up (Noah Antwiler?). I kind of hear the resemblance, but he has a way better voice :D
Case Blue is the Culmination of 80s wargaming .... it is GOD
Looking forward to watching all your videos in this series. OCS is a great game system.
This is awesome - I’m getting ready to play Sicily ii
Try Europa Universalis IV.
Put your channel on my list for Roads & Boats, Amerigo, and so on - stayed for the wargaming. Then, after a couple of years of silence, you come back showcasing this game? Talk about coming back big - this should be interesting!
Great video!

Happy to see other VQ fans! We play this in the Philippines too. We got a six player game sometime around Christmas. i also got to play this at Consimworld Expo in Tempe, Arizona last June.
