90% of us really don’t need level 2. Unless you want to make electricians rich with their ridiculous amount they charge
Thank you!! Just bought one and am taking it on a 2400 mile road trip. Any advice from a seasoned road tripper?
If you drive less than 15k a year (-40 miles a day) as 95% of the people, you won't need a level 2. I get 1.4kwh (-6 miles on my EV6) per hour from my 110V wall outlet! Charging overnight (say, 10 hours) will give you 60 more miles the next morning from your cheap utility rate. So you don't even need to plug in everyday. I only do it twice a week. You use dc fast charge for road trips. I don't see why level 2. Also, level 2 is just 220V wall outlet. Any electrician can add one for <$500, then you just plug in your mobile charger which usually comes with both plugs.
Here's something WAY more important: Here in North Texas, the response time for maintenance is currently sitting at 3.5 months. They only have one tech servicing all of North Texas. Be prepared to not have solar for many months a year if you go Tesla.
Here's some tips for those wanting faster charging but not wanting to spend a lot of money. You don't have to wire in a 50amp connector. You can install a 120v 20amp run, which will charge at 16 amps, instead of the normal 12, this would be extremely cheap and be about 33% faster. If you spent a little extra, you could install a cheap 240v, 30 amp plug, which would charge at 24 amps. That's 400% faster. We used this exclusively when we first got our car, as there was a spare dryer plug in the garage. I did end up installing a full 50amp connector at much cost and effort, but the kicker is the LFP 2023 M3 can only charge at 32amps on Level 2. So we went from 24amps to 32amp....which wasn't much. Basically 24 miles of range per hour to about 33 miles of range per hour.
I have a Nissan Leaf and my issue is the one time I want to use the charging cable that came with the car has a 240v plug NOT the standard 110v 3 prong I expected. I'm the only one I know with an electric car, so I can't borrow one. I need a standard 3 prong cable so I can plug it in. Just a couple hours would get me home. The cable that came with the car is no good to me, and I didn't know until too late. I don't know if any power at all is getting to the main battery through a battery charger attached to the 12v battery under the hood. It was enough to open the charging port of the car, which I couldn't do without charging the 12v.
I started using the 120 outlet this week. I only drive 50 miles a day. It’s 10 hours to top it back off. Every morning it’s a fresh battery. It works great. Plus there are at least 4 supercharger sites within 5 minutes of my house.
Perfect video bro, really appreciate it
i drive less than 100km per week so yeah level 1 will be more than enough thank you for this video we will purchase the BYD Seagull next year with 300km WLTP range
I’m late to the party but TY. I was bitting my nails on my decision in buying one. You gave be my answer in one sentence ❤
Terrific breakdown, and I think you make excellent points. For all the reasons you give, I am glad I went with the long range. I have heard from other performance drivers that they go through tires fast. That was a concern for me. I have the Model 3 LR, and it's perfect for me because I drive a lot and I also drive long distances. I find the acceleration on the LR even without acceleration boost to be most excellent. Of course, I would enjoy an even faster car, but this is already tremendous and I find the ability to accelerate fast not only exhilarating but also much safer than the cars I have had in the past. The ride is comfortable and definitely has that luxury sports car feel, but with all the advance technology of a Tesla.
the rest of the world: what is 110?
LOL
Excellent. Very relatable.
Call me old or lame, but I find the ride quality of the LR to be slightly on the harsh side as it is, and the handling to be good _enough_ for my purposes. The additional harshness would irritate me more than the better handling would entertain me.
The capacity of a battery is rated in kWh. The (max) rating of a power source is rated in W or kW.
you've convinced me.
Nice video. Also I am welcoming you guys to test these ev vehicles in some of the highest motorable passes in the world here in India such as Khardung La 17,582 ft and Umling La 19,300 ft. Tata's home grown evs have done it.
If you only have basic arithmetic skills, anyone can understand that a Level 2 charger is better suited for busy modern individuals. However, if your daily driving distance is not long, Level 1 charging is sufficient. Since I drive about 20-30 miles a day, it's not a problem for me at all. The only drawback is that I have to plug in the charger every evening after work and unplug it before heading to work the next day. It took me quite some time to get used to charging my Apple Watch regularly after I started using it more than three years ago. Similarly, I think it might take a bit of time for me to get into the habit of unplugging and plugging in the charger for my car after getting out of it every evening. It might not take as long as with the Apple Watch, but it'll still be an adjustment.
Don’t even charge at home bro. Free charging at work. lol
Thank you. I don’t even need the stage 2 charger
Great video and well presented.
I barely need to level one charging at home. So many places to level 2 charge such as Costco, 24Hour Fitness, amazon go, Vons, etc. The only reason I am considering putting in a 220v outlet is so i can trust the wiring, not because I need level 2.
Thanks. This vid was very informative and helpful. You mentioned the down side of only having 120v. If you are pre-conditioning the vehicle there is usually nothing left for charging. If you charge at night during the week to take advantage of lower rates you may not fully charge before it is time to leave if you are preconditioning. I experience this when I charge my vehicle at 120v with a 20 amp breaker. The vehicle is charging at 12amps maximum you can Choose between 8 and 12 amps draw in the vehicle charging menu for 120v. It was not a big deal though. In the winter it may not be able to warm the car, as you mentioned. I am installing a 50amp circuit and a 14-50 to use 240v. Then we will be able to precondition the vehicle in the winter. Also, make sure you have a heavy duty gfi receptacle and breaker installed if you will be using the 120v circuit for charging. That applies with any continuous charging for an ev.
not news to me, I have had my M3LR for almost 2.5 years and charge at home. No discount, but my utility recommends 3pm to 8am, to be kind to the grid which is what I do. It works fine for me and I have only needed SCs on trips. Before buying the car I had considered my use case and expected it to work. There were so many that insisted it was mandatory to install a 240v system. I ignored them. The number of people that asked if I install solar panels because I have an EV. Why? I have two home HVACs each on 240v 50A circuits, the pull a ton more power that my car.
How the hell do you do that with your eyes so quick? It's like some Men & black alien type stuff 😱 they are among us!!
Charging on level one standard outlet also preserves your battery and makes it last longer. If you’re only using the vehicle to go back-and-forth to work it’s a win-win.
Thanks
LR being delivered Saturday! I can't wait
I was torn between both as well. I didn’t need the performance of either. If they made a long range single motor, I would have been happy. But they don’t. Yes the P has a harder ride due to wheels and suspension set up. But as a second hand car they are similar prices so I went with the P over LR. Tbh 25 miles extra range is worth the sacrifice. Plus the P was cheaper to insure.
Great video wish I would’ve seen that in October 2023 when I got the car but now that I’m “stuck “I will take the 0-60 in 3.10 and 2 car length advantage at the stop light over the long range. Also my 162mph vs 145mph. And when they did the testing real world, that long range is nowhere near the promise range you normally get where the performance holds a little closer. A lot of factors involved it’s like asking a guy why did she drive that Corvette every day to work? Because he can!
Great video. I drive a Kona EV and level 1 works great for me. In the gas world it's "empty to full." When your tank is empty you fill it up. In the EV world the word is "replace." If you have a daily commute then every night you replace the miles you drove that day. I no longer have a daily commute, but when my SOC is at 40%, usually about once a week, I plug in and replace the miles I drove during the prior week. If I need to drive somewhere before is it finished charging, I just unplug and go and plug back in when I return. Also, I have my EV programmed to stop charging during peak price rates and resume charging when off-peak rates begin again.
Loving my performance.
It would be awesome if all tesla cars could auto connect to starlink .but due to China us relationships most likely won't happen 😅
Level one is very okay if it's the only solution. If you could have level two, this would be better because level one takes too long to charge, and every hour more, you will use nearly 20% of the total energy to run the car's electric circuit, which is wasted. Accordingly, if you need 10 hours on level two and 50 hours on level one, this is a 40-hour difference, times 20%, 8 hours of extra electricity usage, roughly 12kWh if you consume 1.5 kWh on level one of additional payment.
I have the reverse situation: Level 2 at the new house and Level 1 at the office. 60 mile drive each way. So, 8 hours at the office would nearly offset the drive in and overnight at the house would easily top it up to full. How is the battery holding up 3 years later since SuperChargers aren't a regular thing for you?
Thanks for the video. I’m getting my 23 MYP tomorrow and will only have a level 1 charger until FPL installs charger after permit approval (roughly 2 months). I drive 40 miles a day. I figure get it to about 75% at a Level 2-3 charger near my house and I should be able to maintain my battery to between 40-80%.
I have a co-worker that owns a Bolt and he lives outside the city. About an hours drive both ways. He's very informed on all things EV and has no regrets with his. I do roughly 30kms/day of just mostly to and from work. And I too live in an apartment with plug ins for the winter months but they converted the outlets tot he 4hr timers, so it cycles the power. But this is good info on your part.
I just bought my Tesla Model 3 in October. I have used my dryer plug to charge twice. I’ve started to do this 1-2 time a week on the weekend when I drive more. But I have primarily used level 1 in my garage. When initially got my vehicle I didn’t have a wall charger so I did supercharge a lot but I’ve gotten the hand of level 1 charging.
I'm buying my first ev. How much did it increase your electric bill?
For me, probably $25 a month or so depending on how much I'm driving.
Sometimes I get home late and the 6-7 hours before I go to work is more than enough to charge the car back up to full from the 50-60% I have.
Thank you, I am glad I watched this video.
There are cars like Volkswagen that can have big rims but without the tires being thin
Don't forget the acceleration even if there is a boost package for testa 3 long range. within situational signs. For now we have received the new version of Tesla 3 in Sweden. But I don't think it exists as a performance yet
You do not need to drive on a Track to use track Mode. There may be other reasons such as you deciding yourself how much power should be on the rear and front wheels. then you can also have constant four-wheel drive if you want? It might also be good if you want to fool around in the snow. or temporarily turn it into a BMW M3. so full power on the rear wheels so you can skid and spin
In Sweden, it is a law that you must have winter tires in the winter. and when you order a Tesla in Sweden, you also have the choice to order winter tires with rims when ordering. And they come with smaller size rims Can't remember if it was 18 or 19 inches exactly
Grt vid. I park my model y in my garage and temp is usually in 60s avg. My avg drive per day is 60 miles. So I think i am gonna be ok with level 1
I got my Lectron Vbox installed yesterday. 40AMP circuit level 2. I drive less than 40 miles per day.
Nobody talks about this but the 2018-2019 and even some of the 2020 LRs have 980 rear motors which are the same motors in the performance and theres a mod called the ghost chip you can buy from ingenext and it adds 150hp to your LR model 3 if it has the 980 rear motor. It doesn't damage the motor at all. It basically unlocks the power of that rear motor. It's a 1400$ chip. And it will void ur warranty most likely but if you do not care. And you through some carbon fiber on the car like carbon fiber hood and trunk lid. Then get some flow forged rims light weight. Gut the interior. That car will run 2.9s easy. If you just plug the chip into a car with no weight reduction you're already hitting 3.1 0-60 so close to 300 pounds of weight be shed will take you down to that 2.9ish range. I firmly believe the LR from those 3 years are actually worth more money they were actually originally sold for. And I would not be surprised if the company took massive losses from the LRs of those years. Proud owner of a 2019 LR with a 980 motor. After 100,000 or 2027 I will be ghost chipping
I would only buy the 3P and I did. After 3 years in getting rid of it and bought the Plaid. I have tesla solar and could not care less about range. I use the performance on a daily basis.
