Our town's set up is a bit different - we're ultra urban so there isn't as much use for compost for most residents. However, we are able to drop off organics at a number of convenient spots where the city has bins that get picked up and exchanged every week. We love it! I actually keep any accumulated compost in the freezer until I'm ready to drop it off. I have also been able to reduce my garbage to a medium bag every 3-4 weeks since there isn't anything to get smelly, and we have recycling pick up as well. While I'd love to have a place to use compost, I'm glad my household landfill waste is so dramatically reduced and someone else gets some good compost out of it.

Greetings from Ireland, We have a compost bin collection service. I have a three bay compost system and make my own compost. I mulch the flowerbeds every February and put a handful of organic fish blood and bone meal around each plant. The plants don't get any more fertiliser until the following year.

Here in Indianapolis there is nothing. The yard waste must do in the garbage bin. When living outside Detroit we had yard water pick up within our routine garbage pick up plan though no available mulch or compost available in return. It would be heaven to have what you have! I love gardening and mulch and compost is extremely expensive here.

We have the same thing in our community - curb side green waste pick up. If you don't have it and you want it, get your neighbors to join you in asking for it (repeatedly if needed). Ask your trash company, your city council and your state officials. If enough people ask enough times, you can get this service. It makes life so easy and it turns trash into treasure!

I did have luck transplanting peonies. I did leave a good-sized root ball. We carefully put it in the wheelbarrow, trying not to knock off the dirt and immediately set it in the new location. They actually did great. They came from the bareroot plants that Costco sells. I had put them in the wrong location initially.

Your mock orange is beautiful!!! I wish my neighbor had one to spill over to my yard! Your garden is looking so green and lush. That compost is really paying off. I was amazed to find out that you can put hydrangea stems that are flopping over , in the ground , and they will root and make a new plant!!! Even just putting a heavy rock on the stem to hold it down to the ground. Incredible! Those bricks for free was a total score. I can't tell you how much I have spent on used bricks at Home Depot for my yard. They used to be 85 cents each., now they are $1.15 each!!! But I love the look of the used ones so much. I love when you mentioned other bloggers who are affiliated with a nursery or grower, and get loads of plants delivered. And......not only that... a landscaping company comes and plants everything for them!!!! No fair!!!! Well, your garden is stunning to me. Its real, its nature in its truest form. And your hard scape paths are everything!

I think new money people should be more confident than old money people because they worked for it and earned it rather than simply being born into it. They’re accomplished. Old money usually comes from exploitation of less powerful humans. See Rothschild, Rockefeller, Morgan, Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Windsor …….

Is it still a Chelsea Chop if the deer eat your blossoms? 🦌🌸

  • @elisekuby2009
    @elisekuby2009 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

The Chelsea Chop is great for many flowers. However, if you are a competition gardener, you will not do this, because the size of the flower, fragrance, shape, etc is determined by no chop chop. When you do the chop, the plant is forced to distribute its native energy to all of the new side shoots it is building, and the resulting flowers will be many more, but smaller. Great for my Phlox David, and Asters, and Veronicastrum. All of those need staking every year, which is tedious. Have not tried this on my Sedum, but will do it this year, for sure. Thanks for the great info.😊

That herringbone brick path in the front walkway is so charming!!!!! It really sets off the beautiful border plantings. I know the Chelsea chop is so beneficial... but I am the worst at cutting anything that has a flower on it. I follow another gardener who is brutal with her chopping and pruning. It amazes me how she can mow down an entire section that , to me, is looking incredible. But hers always comes back better than ever. I must be brave!

Barbara Bush and her husband, George HW Bush, were truly old money. She famously needlepointed a rug used at the White House and their home in Kennebunkport. I recall her being interviewed about the rug and she said she was working on it in 1974 when her husband was liaison to China. I don't know when she completed the rug but it beautifully covered the floor of the White House living room from 1989 to 1993. Plenty of photos online of it in-progress and on display.

I raised my children this way. I always told them that you didn’t have to “be rich to look rich”. And by this I simply meant that those items that held the most value to you should always be the ones you surround yourself with. They should have a story attached to them, whether it be the art of a friend, a relative or your own design, a gift from your grandparents or a friend, something you found on your travels or on the curb, and if you have fine china, use it … daily if you are compelled to do so. But don’t be ostentatious, it’s unseemly and rude. I live on a very modest income and after my divorce, I raised my four children on my own. Our doors were always open to others and we treated them like family. I am still called “mom” by many of my children’s friends and other neighborhood children that came through our doors throughout the years. I have always had an eye for design, and have always been told I have style. It’s almost funny that people who come in to my home nearly always assume I come from old money and am simply slumming it. I tend bar at a local dive bar. Lol.

I really enjoyed this! I've always appreciated unique items and out-of-the-ordinary designs. I'm an artist and, for awhile, I served on public art committees. I discovered that most people choose art/design based on other people's opinions. It was a sad experience, watching fantastic art get overlooked because committee members were scared of what "other people would think" of their decision. Most people's homes are a reflection of this very lack of confidence and, as a result, BORING! An aside, as someone who lives on a farm, I've always been perplexed that so much of "Farmhouse style" is white! Anyone living on a farm knows better than to paint anything WHITE! LOL

I really enjoyed your comment, especially "most people choose art/design based on other people's opinions." Thanks for taking the time to share.

Nothing is more ridiculous than cheap plastic mass-produced Louis XV furniture spray painted gold. And of course upholstery in a cheetah print.

In England some of the upper class will actually refer to people who "had to buy their own furniture" meaning the are not from a wealthy family that passed down furinture.

I think Bunny Williams has a pretty specific idea of junk shop. Now those shops are often online and the key for me is to find something the seller doesn’t know they have. I’ve gotten some amazing things that way. But, too, you can find a thirty dollar table that’s worth refinishing or painting - but then you’re looking at the lines of it (form and function). Not every thirty dollar table is great. The vast majority are not. Williams started designing furniture when she couldn’t find enough of what she wanted.

The hunt can be difficult if you are looking for something specific. I found a little solid wood table and used that as a base to build a side table/bookshelf. It was less expesive than buying the wood alone.

Lovely tour! The pink azalea at the beginning is gorgeous. Looks so peaceful in that back area.
