    I want to do this (one year old 65 gallon) because I know I will not change the anode rod in the future and will rot out the tank prematurely. For an appliance this expensive, it's crazy that it doesn't come with electronnic cathodic protection. It would be much better to engineer it in from the start. Great comment section too - helpful experiences.

    If you didn't think the powered anode rod would prevent the corrosion, then you should have just removed the old rod and left it unprotected :) Also I'm pretty sure it would be illegal for Rheem to void your warranty for replacing a maintenance part like the anode rod. In fact it would be counter-productive for them because replacing the anode rod makes the tank last longer. The condenser being a little dented on the top is inconsequential. the fins are so delicate it's no wonder they get a little bent from assembly of the top. Thank you for documenting the removal of that annoying plastic shroud! That "grab and twist" maneuver you did with the pliers is exactly what I would have done. I'm going to try mine next week so your video is very helpful! Finally I believe that powered rod takes a 1-3/16 socket, not a 1-3/8". Why they don't make it 1-1/16" to match every standard anode rod is beyond me!

    The term "self-levelling is a misnomer. You have level it yourself. I did all the hard work and removed my old flooring and then I hired a so-called professional to "self-level... big mistake! Unfortunately, they made big claims and my floor is uneven, just like yours. So do not hire a professional. Always do it yourself and learn how to do it.

    Great video! And what a PITA getting the plastic sleeve out.. I was wondering if an electric impact wrench, with an extension, would be a good way to go (after the plastic sleeve is removed) to get the old anode out?

    • @EvolutionDIY
      @EvolutionDIY หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some others have commented that they were able to remove the rod without removing the plastic sleeve so consider trying that first. I also think an impact may work, but you would probably not be able to use an impact socket because the walls are so thick. A regular socket on an impact should work (although not ideal to run a regular socket on an impact). It was several years ago and I honestly don’t remember why I didn’t use my 1/2” impact. Good luck!

    Excellent video. I had sulfur smell with our old water heater that went away I assume when the old anode got completely eaten away. I put in a Richmond (Rheem) hybrid heater last month and 3 days ago the sulfur smell was back. I've ordered a powered anode after watching this video and will install it tomorrow. I'll probably just disconnect the PEX allowing me to tip the water heater to get the old anode out (after draining it of course) rather than chopping the old one up. That way I guess if I do have warranty claims I can sneak the old anode back in before calling for repair.

    • @EvolutionDIY
      @EvolutionDIY 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      From reading through other comments, it seems like they were able to get the socket on without cutting out the plastic cap. Maybe try that first. Also, several others have said they called Rheem and they said changing the rod will not void the warranty. I’m a few years in, and everything still seems to be working good. No sulfur smell, and my tank isn’t rusted through yet, so hopefully the powered anode is doing its job! Good luck with your project!

    • @John_Ridley

    • @John_Ridley
      @John_Ridley หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@EvolutionDIY I was able to as well. The cap was not centered over the anode on mine, so I put it on with a bunch of extensions and just drove it on with a hammer. Then it came right out with a breaker bar. Total success, in one day this took us from a gag-inducing amount of sulfur smell to none at all.

  • @John_Ridley

    Personally I'd grind down the socket instead of screwing around with the plastic cap. I've had to make special purpose super thin wall sockets in the past for other things.

    @EvolutionDIY great video! You made a fantastic Point regarding not knowing it was working until much later. So, Now that it's been 4 years, I'm curious what your thoughts are? It would really be terrible to have a false sense of security that this device is protecting the water heater only to find out that it wasn't really doing a job as well as the sacrificial anode. It would be great if there was a way to have a sacrificial anode in addition to this device, using the sacrificial part as a visual representation of the efficiency of the electric anode.

    i went over the run time on mine and got a partial bond except near my door. used the bare minimum water amount exactly, weighing out the leveler bag for a partial fill. didn't know if i could trust my foam tape dams (you actually can). had to crack off a good tenth of my project where i found a couple carpet staples i missed. thing is, you may need to prime before repairing. didnt see if you did. primer type is on the product. both the floor and concrete. abrate (light sanding) as well per instructions before priming. a placer helps smooth the material but my jack and jill sink rooms are small. the one i had to redo a bit is narrow and pesky. at least in round 2, I bought a trowel.

    That little led light won't do anything to your battery life. Given enough time, it could possibly run your battery down, but most people mow more than once every few years, so it shouldn't be an issue. :) That looks like a 2 milliamp led light(most indicator led lights are 2 or 10 milliamps, 20 is the max you'll ever find), so it would take 4.5 years to run down a 6000 mAH battery. So I wouldn't worry to much the next go around. ;) Great video btw, appreciate the time you took to make it!

    • @EvolutionDIY
      @EvolutionDIY 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Constantly getting grass clippings in the pond (example mowing weekly with the chute facing the pond) is a bad idea. It adds nitrogen to the water, and can cause increased algae. In this video, I am showing my twice a year mowing to maintain the banks. Some of the clipping go into the pond as you see, but overall, only doing this twice a year has not caused me any issues. When I mow the regular grass around the pond, I make sure to blow the clippings away from the pond.

    Question! I have a chair that has the vinyl wrapping and plastic rivets. Can I use the poly webbing and screws to replace the broken vinyl straps and rivets? The typical lawn chair webbing screws are too small (8). A diameter of 14 is too big. Anyone know what size screws will fit, or will I just have to do trial and error? Otherwise, I may end up doing a macrame and weaving with paracord. Thanks!

    Thank you for the video. I have been running the core protect rod in my Bradford white heat pump tank for several years. So far it has been great. I do recommend that if you have any Pex piping that you run grounds to all branches. I’ve had issues with calcium buildup at my transition location. I didn’t have this before the CoreProtect so I’m assuming that it is related. It is an easy fix especially since I no longer have the smell. At this point I have been very satisfied with the CoreProtect and I have not had any tank issues so I believe that it is working as advertised. As a side note, a few months ago I did have a blinking light on my power supply and the customer service quickly sent me a replacement power supply. I was very pleased with their response.

    Thanks for the video. So many "experts" have videos on this that makes it look easy but so little can be found on what happens when things go wrong. Also as I just learned earlier, Mapei makes a self level plus that takes 24+ hours just to walk on BUT it's a far better product for a single person, DIY or novice as there's substantially more time to work the product. Mine started to set up after only 7 minutes to where the rake marks never leveled out. Thankfully I had the smart idea to start using a floor scraper after it sat for an hour and hadn't fully cured so it was easy to remove 2/3s of it before I was screwed.

      What product did you use initially? I used Customs Leveler RS from HD with a trowel to break the surface tension but ended up with a high spot in the middle of the pour area from front to back. I poured a 32x60 section for a shower pan so it is a small area but it is over new plywood that is screwed down. Not sure how to proceed at this point. Should I grind the high spots down or just try to remove the whole pour with a rotary hammer just like I did to remove the original tile.

    Work a flathead screwdriver under the lip of the plastic cap. Lift up as you go. I eventually got a small claw bar under the cap and was able to pry it out in one piece
