I love how for the first half of the scene, Utena the Prince and Anthy the Bride are shown upside down, just reflections of the dancing schoolgirls. But then after the roses fall, the world turns, and the Prince and Bride are right side up. They are real, and the others are the reflection. This is who Utena and Anthy truly are and want to be. They revolutionized the world.
When people think of Utena they mostly think of that famously scene where Utena transforms into a car. But what I strongly connect with Utena is this song and this dance scene! 😍
The movie was in almost all ways except the art direction and animation a complete abortion compared to the series, but this scene stands out as the loveliest in the entire canon in my opinion. Can never get enough of it, and Toki Ni Ai Wa still has a spot on my mp3 rotation to this day.
I feel like the movie isn't really supposed to hold up on it's own, and is only really supposed to be appreciated for giving fan service/ catharsis to certain aspects of the anime. I like it on that basis, though. Better than most things that only exist for fan service, at least...
I know this comment is a year old, but I thought I'd weigh in anyway. The anime and the movie are going for two completely different styles of story telling. The anime is going for a very literal story. Utena is literally a girl who is trying to be a prince. The student council is literally trying to gain access to the castle in the sky. The movie is going for a much more metaphoric story. The visuals are supposed to represent the feelings the characters are experiencing more than what is actually happening. So when the characters turn into cars, it supposed to be one character using the other as a vehicle to escape their problems. When they're dancing and the reflections are different, one side of the reflection is reality, while the other is how the characters feel about themselves in the moment. I agree that the style the movie went for is extremely high brow, and hard to follow if you don't know about this style of story telling. The anime had visual metaphors too, and didn't go nearly as strange as the movie did. I appreciate what the movie was trying to do, but I like the anime better.
she is a girl who want to be a noble prince in the anime, but here in the movie, she want to be a noble prince because she was too shame to be a woman because she was abandoned by touga her boyfriend here

I often look back at this scene. If I ever have a wedding or a pretend wedding then I would want it to be like this
For a video that was uploaded in 2006, this quality is awesome.
I'd consider them the best lesbian couple in anime besides Sailor Neptune and Uranus
okay so how am I supposed to be satisfied with real-life romantics after I saw THIS
Romance Utena anshi

Somos 2 xD
is it just me, or was the movie incomparable to the anime? In that the movie was terrible, while the anime was a masterpiece?
I agree, except I did enjoy the movie somewhat. Especially this scene and the ending. But story and plot vise it was kind of all over the place.

日本からの書き込みが殆ど無い・・・悲しいかな日本では数多の名作達も遠い忘却の彼方。 いつか再びこの作品が輝きますように。
