Adventures of a Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab XL, moored at the Embarcadero in Newport, Oregon. Our goal with this channel is to hit 100 subscribers so we can live stream the 2024 fishing season for those who can't make every trip.

After some tense microseconds, we landed a 10lb. wild Coho to finish out the 2024 ocean season.

Another smaller wild fish, same troll zone (~2.5mph) fishing in the prop wash at 170 ft. due west of the lighthouse.

9lb hatchery fish caught in 175 ft. of water straight west of the lighthouse.

The unrestricted Coho quota went real fast and ends tomorrow in our area. We got out for a last rodeo of the season and brought home two smaller fish and two hogs, with two more self-releasing. It was fun seeing over 50 boats in the near-shore area, with lots of dipping nets and high fives. Fishing is most fun when everyone is doing well!

Had a couple of these puppies cut and run (or run, then cut) earlier in the day, so getting this hog on board was definitely a coup towards the end of our morning. Beautiful fish, perfect send off on gorgeous Pacific Northwest September day on the ocean.

Round two of the Coho rodeo Olympics. These first two fish were caught in about 180 feet of water due west of the lighthouse.

6 ft. swells forecast along with 15-20 knot winds.....swell held true, winds completely dissipated and we were able to get over the bar for another amazing day on the water. Slow Coho bite (as has been the case this whole season), warm water temperatures, and a lot of pecking scratching to get some fish today. So happy to have my parents out again with father-in-law Mike to slay some salmon!
Time for Another Net: Double Coho, One Landed--Newport, OR, 9-1-24

We landed two Coho today and had two others on the line all the way to the boat before they escaped this one was a bummer. Jack's fish got tangled in our third line out and cut its own line while I was messing with the darn net from the first catch. Lessons learned, but we won't starve.

Jack lands the first fish on opening day of non-select Coho! The bite was...intermittent until 9am then *gone*. That's just what happens some days. Will have the camera angle lower next time. Got our first Halibut of the day by 7:30am after a 45 minute run (18 miles) on a pretty amazing ocean this morning, followed by 15 minutes of fishing. Gotta love Mondays! Fish were swarming the middle of Stonewall (East). Just follow the currents with some up-to-date data to find where they are hot.

Fishing on a Monday, very much appreciating life on days like this! On a great tip from a salty ol' commercial fisherman, we learned a lot about the currents interacting with Stonewall Bank. Converging currents bring zooplankton swarms, which herring and other bait fish target, allowing for larger predatory fish like Halibut and Ling Cod to feast. Tried some spots on the SW side of Stonewall without success, then started hooking them on the middle east side (29/20, around the Harrison Ridge numbers). Nothing huge, but the biggest we've brought aboard this year at 38". Really nice fish.

Strong south wind combined with SW, W, and NW waves for a washing machine run back from mom's birthday fishing trip. Thankful for a pilothouse Stabicraft boat on days like this we were warm and dry inside while green water was spraying every direction.

Heck yea, that's awesome! There's one other pretty similar black Stabi out of Toledo ("Salt Mafia"), we're still working out the right name for ours. Love the boat though. Great day on the water, hope you fared well!
Man the Ocean looks great, I was crabbing with the kids today and the parking lot was packed! I am glad you got out there on the last day.

we catch halibut in 250 feet of water with non electric reels. it takes everything out of the fun
Agreed. Reeling up 60 oz. of lead in 250 feet of water to check herring for integrity after halibut bites is not fun. It's even less fun in 600 feet of water. Even less fun in 1000+ feet of water! Electric reels have made grocery fishing less of a chore on our boat and expedited prospecting new spots. Highly recommended.

I just watched a guy use an electric motor to winch up a middling fish into a powerboat using artificial lures and a fish finding sonar. This is the opposite of sportsmanship.
No artificial lures were used, they are obviously using black label herring, you can tell by the size. You can't even offend people properly! What should the world expect from a "progressive house DJ"; talk about the most useless application of time...do you even know how to play a guitar?

I like the rubberized knotless nets up here in puget sound. We cant keep nates either
Put on a heavier leader and ditch the net, use lose sooo much fishing time digging hooks and fish out of a net.
Couple comments on your comment: (1) Oregon fishing regulations require the use of a barbless hooks. Coho are rarely going to make it in the boat without barbs on your hooks--they rodeo like crazy and will rarely be landed by hand. (2) We are in the "hatchery retention" only period where every fish must be inspected before harvesting, as the only retainable Coho are hatchery-raised with a clipped adipose fin--wild must be released. (3) A net touching a fish that eventually gets released is far, far less likely to result in damage (mechanically or through disease transfer). We have no interest in endangering a wild fish destined for release.
What happen to catch and cook
Cleaning fish is a chore. Plus, me releasing means you get a chance to catch and cook the same fish!

15.5 miles NW of the Yaquina Bay bar, about 4 miles north of the Stonewall Bank conservation area. Fishing in about 280 feet of water.

Correction: Spring Chinook season opened today
Correction, the S5 platforms are 14.5" long by 10.5" wide and hang over about 1.25" on the stock welded seat platform (platform measures 13.75" x 11" in my boat).
