STUDIO RITUALS

I love burning insense and especially Frankinsense in my studio. I attribute this to having grown up Roman Catholic. I’ve loved this purifying and grounding ritual since I was a kid. I really did believe that god lived right there in St. Aloysius Church in Jersey City like Father Houlihan always said during his many sermons. With its big heavy bronze doors always open, beyond them revealing an ...
Irons

My fetish for irons of all kinds when fusing with encaustic. I often fuse my encaustic paintings with an iron and over the years have developed somewhat of a fetish for them. They have been gifted to me and I’ve come across them in the strangest ways. The vacation one I’m talking about in the video I swear was gifted to me by fate or the universe or something. About ten years ago, I saw this lu...

    Thank you for sharing your lovely ritual. I was also raised Roman Catholic as a child, and have found so many influences entering into my art practice as well. I still credit my fascination as a child with the reflected colors of the stained glass windows changing throughout Sunday morning mass, as helping to develop my eye and obsession with color, I feel ritual can add a special nuanced layer to one’s art practice. As always Elise, I find how you create so inspiring!

    What was the instrument used at the beginning to create the lines? I’m guessing it’s from batik?

    • @EliseWagnerArtist
      @EliseWagnerArtist 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is a wax writer sold on Fine Art Supply website under heated encaustic tools. Very similar to a batik pen though.

    Love it! How many prints can you get from such a plate? And...is it just pure beeswax what you apply to the plate? Or something added to allow taking more than one print, like plaster or stonepowder? Do you mix the Akua-ink (waterbased) with wax?

    • @Darkeyes3259
      @Darkeyes3259 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am guessing she has not replied bc she wants us to take the course

    • @EliseWagnerArtist
      @EliseWagnerArtist 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oops, I am sorry for the very late response here. You can get about 20 prints from the plate. I am applying beeswax with titanium white in it so you can see the inks better on the plate. The texture of the wax through the use of various tools and textiles makes a deep enough texture. No plaster or stonepowder. Akua Inks are soy based and water clean up. They are applied to the encaustic plate then traditional wiping techniques are used to attain various intaglio effects in the printing process.

      I try to use the ones with steam holes but it doesn't matter. As long as the iron heats up good and and I can wipe it off easily when changing colors.

    Ohhh I'm excited.... tried collagraphing using found materials on my local beach (it's kinda post industrial so we find a great mixture of flotsam and jetsam that can be gathered) we also have a wonderful array/mixture of geology from rocks brought into the local harbour as ballast for the collier ships that shipped coal out from the Durham coast all over the world) I have been desperately looking for a way to combine all these inspirations with my recent discovery of encaustic painting... and this may well be it! Thank yo so much for sharing your process...

      Hi Elise - I think I made a mistake with my press purcahse - (Fome school press £200!) It's too small and having no success with collagraphs so far. I think I will just have to bite the bullet and go for a heftier one? ideally I would like to work to 30 x 30cms.... Thank you for the link about the wax... I don't suppose encaustiflex is available anywhere in the UK yet?

    Elise, I am intrigued by this process. Watching this I have decided to learn about collagraph monotypes at a local art school. But I will need to be taught how to do it with encaustic wax. Do you plan on-line workshops? Or do you plan to travel to Italy or any other place in Europe during September/October 2016? Or to Australia?

    • @EliseWagnerArtist
      @EliseWagnerArtist 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sarah sarah Hi Sarah, I do not do online workshops. I will be demonstrating the process at the SGCI Conference in March of this year. I've no plans to teach in Europe though I would love to. I also have a workshop schedule and people come from all over for my classes and private sessions www.elisewagner.com/encaustic_workshops.html. Here is a link to the upcoming conference, my demo is listed under demos and projects: sgciportland.com/portfolio/demos-and-projects/.
