The best Stratocaster I've ever played...

I've just set this Strat up (fret level & crown, shim the neck pocket, adjust trem, clean up jack socket, etc.) and as soon as I played it afterwards, it was obvious that these pieces of wood work together extremely well! I've played many Stratocasters, and owned a few; but this one _rings_ - it's an excellent guitar, and a real find. The amp is a 1999 Laney LC30 II.

Here's another video from yesterday's gig at The Talbot Inn, Welshpool. I used my Fender Waylon Jennings phaser, which sounds fantastic, and has absolutely no background noise. Also a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver, with the gain right down to act as a clean boost. Any distortion in this video is the mic in the mobile phone clipping. Pete's regular partner Johnny Blue wasn't available, so I was asked to step in for this gig at The Talbot Inn, in Welshpool, which all went very well despite us having no rehearsal or set list! I filled my book with song sheets, and we selected from that, plus some others that Pete played and sang from his own extensive repertoire. You done a really good job here, I like it a lot. If I lived closer I'd deffo like to see you play and record a video or two. All the best to you, take care my friend. 🙂
Thanks! I haven't busked for a very long time.
Hey, hello and Greetings from Newcastle, well not actually Newcastle but 8 miles south in a village you wouldn't know even if I told you. New subscriber here and I'll be watching more of your video's later when I'm home. . . . . Great song this, big OASIS / Noel Gallagher fan here, next time throw a few swear words in to make it more realistic. 😃
Great tone!
Ah one of my all time favourite songs ❤

Good evening. Seems to be a lovely guitar. Sounded really good👏👌💯🎵🎶🎸. Very much enjoyed and a big 👍28. PS! Have 20 Stratocasters by myself. All the best Olav
Thanks Olav! This one belongs to my cousin, who asked me to set it up for him. I own just one; a 2019 Squier CV 50s, which is good, but not as good as his! Many years ago I owned a 1979 Strat, but sold that when I found that I preferred Telecasters. Of course, I then needed a trem, which was when I bought the CV. Do you play all 20 of your Strats, or do you find that some of them are better than the others, and gravitate to them?
@@1man1guitarletsgo Hello again. I am not a good guitarist, so I am not very qualified to say something bombastic. But I am an guitar entusiast. I usually play on 2-3 of them, but tune up and adjust most of them regularly. My guitars have different combinations of wood, hardware, and electronics. In my opinion the tone and sustain depend very much of the wood and the tremolo bridge. Most important, I think, is the neck. I don't like to use very heavy guitars, so I prefer daily use of the light weight guitars. I have some guitars there is light weight and still have good sustain/tone. If you have opinions/experience, please let me know. Best regards Olav
I really enjoyed listening to this, it sounded like you were having fun too! Thanks.👍
Great playing! Hints for those licks?
Thanks, that's very kind. OK, I've just watched it back. I started with a chord sequence: A, Bflat diminished, Bm7, C diminished, A/C#, C#m7 flat 5, D, Dm7, A, F#m, Bm7, E7, and back to A. Then it was just whatever came into my head, but generally based around CAGED, so pretty much every lick thereafter could be linked to a chord shape. I don't read music, so I have to read the fretboard, and to do this I visualise chord and scale shapes.
nice korean squier
Nice voice and playing….
this is awesome dude, amazing playing!
nice playing! ty for sharing
That's "A FIND."
The best one i played is my Fender Player Stratocaster. then i tried 4 Telecasters, 3 from Fender, 1 from Squier Affinity series, and believe me i choose the Squier over the 3 Fender Player, Fender Vintage and Fender Pro series! So yeah Squier can be both the cheaper guitar, and sometimes, but not always, the better too! I love Fender, i've had a 1999 Squier Strat when i was young, and Squier have really come a long way, not that it was anything wrong with the Squier from 1999, but that particular one did not overgo any strat, but the Squier Aff Tele... i promise you, I wanted an Americal pro first, then tried it ( found it chunky over the neck ) tried the vintage which i didnt like the tuners on, tried the Mexican, almost sure i was going for that but then i felt that the Affinity Telecaster resemblances the Telecaster sound i remembered from when i was young, it had the punch, it was all up in my face... i just loved it, so yeah.. sometimes expensive is not better!
those are ceramic pickups for you!
Affinity is garbage ! Classic vibe ,pretty good !
@@unacuentadeyoutube13 😀
@@egSmith-sp9gl Not in my opinion after i have tried 4 different Telecasters. Squier affinity came out best!

Hello 1man1guitar. A lovely melody and a nice cover. Great vocal, very well played and sounded good👏👌💯🎵🎶🎸. Very much enjoyed and a big 👍3. All the best Olav
Thanks Olav! This is a great song. I particularly like the versions by Barry Manilow, and Shakin' Stevens.
One does not simply fret with one's index finger for an E or A chord.
Thank you. Two points: 1) What has that to do with this video, which is about _my_ way of playing an open A minor chord? 2) An index finger placed behind fret 2, and covering strings 2, 3, and 4 yields A Major when strings 5, 4, 3, and 2 are strummed. Ask any guitarist: they'll tell you.
@@1man1guitarletsgo Sorry if my comment was inappropriate. To clarify my thought, my understanding has been that it's considered "more correct" to use middle, ring, and pinky fingers when fretting an A or E chord in first position with standard tuning.
What advantage do you find in using your index finger to fret this chord?
@@ImYourOverlord If you watch this video, and the other short ones that I posted recently, the main message that I want to send is that it's absolutely fine to play chords however you want. Whatever's comfortable and convenient, as long as the _sound_ is right. Your comment about the "more correct" way to play a chord flies in the face of my message. Learner guitarists often feel that they must not deviate from specific fingerings, but this is not the case. Any fingering that achieves the desired sound is fine, as far as I'm concerned.
@@1man1guitarletsgo I appreciate that different musicians have different views on this. I should have qualified my statement by mentioning that I'm a purist, and from a purist's perspective, there are certain specific fingering positions for chords. I prefer not to deviate from those standards unless something is just too physically awkward. I'm not trying to dismantle your message here :)
Yup.. that's exactly how I play it too. I also move those fingers to the bass strings and my pinky on the high E for the G chord.
Thanks for commenting. The main thing I try to convey is: play chords however you want, regardless of what fingering someone says is "correct".
I like this! The only challenge for me is I do have the movement/bend/flex of the tip of my fingers like that. That last little joint in my fingers barely bends at all. I’ve seen a numbers of chords played using the last little bend to hold down a couple or even 3 strings but I just haven’t got that movement 🙁
Thank you. Inflexible fingers can be a problem (I find it difficult playing chords that stretch along the neck). OK, with this technique it doesn't matter if you also press down on the thinner strings, as long as you only strum the ones that contain the relevant notes. So your index finger could press all 6 strings and your ring finger the 5 thinnest. You strum strings 6,5, and 4, and that's your chord. Move your whole hand (or just your ring finger) across the neck one string, and play strings 5,4, and 3. That's your second chord shape, and in this position you could also play string 2, but that would definitely make this a major chord.
Great song + great picking!
You're doing great as always! I believe, I've never heard this song before & I haven't heard about The Zutons before, but it sounds kinda cool in the chords progressions - a sixties vibe. To me "Valerie" was a song by Richard Thompson and I love the Marshall Crenshaw version...
Thanks Chris!

An amazing performance, my friend! Cheers
Interesting song to choose! And you're doing it great! And I do hear a drum machine in the back ;-)
Thanks Chris, this was several years ago, and I was using an Alesis SR-18 drum machine. I programmed it with rhythms that were copies of those found in a Korg Rhythm 55 from the early 1980s. So the beats were the same, but the drum sounds were much better.
@@1man1guitarletsgo Cool! My first drum machine was a Boss DR-110, and after that I've used several types of Roland machines. Now, I go with digital solutions like EZDrummer. Back in the eighties, me and a friend used Korg DDM-110 drums and percussion on some duo-recordings. The CDW-project is a solo DIY-project, where I play all instruments. Way back I was a stand-up-drummer on a Gretsch-set, while snging lead-vocals. It was in a trio called The Rebels, and was the first time I was on national radio (1985). I only have audio, but I'm planning some videos from that time...
