    Great stuff! Been working on light wind jibes myself and keeping the wind horizontal in the transition is definitely important.

      The cool thing is the same principles can be applied to wing handling when luffing the wing and riding swell. By keeping the wing horizontal and flipping it to the other hand late, you can do hard cutbacks Mcflowi style on the wave or swell.

    In light wind you often have to tack when gybing because you are going faster than the wind. This is the hardest light wind gybe.

    • @wingmanfoilclub
      @wingmanfoilclub 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It’s really not. Watch the tutorial again then try and implement what I’m doing. It’s definitely easier than tacking. A heelside tack can be good in light wind, but if not perfectly executed you come off foil. This light wind jibe works in almost no wind. The keys are building speed, turning quickly, keeping the wing flat and sheeted in, then flipping the wing quickly as you come around, then pumping back on foil. Trust me. I wouldn’t have made a whole TH-cam video if it wasn’t effective. :)

    The ranch has one wave I towed into with a longboard that could be really good for tow foil: it’s all the way at the end about 3/4 mile directly east of gov point. The bump starts way out there and can be ridden all the way to the beach and I’ve never seen another surfer on it or anywhere near it. The kelp could be an issue; in general the whole area has tons of kelp and is all in the wind shadow. Awesome idea to wing there, hope you can try again and make it work sometime.

    • @wingmanfoilclub
      @wingmanfoilclub 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the intel! Government Point would be a long haul! Unfortunately I think the wind is just too funky to make this idea work. It gets wind almost everyday even when SB is flat, but it’s that offshore gusty wind. I don’t know.

      There seems to be a core group that wings and kites Lake Pontchartrain. Grande Isle also looks quite good. I think you’ll have no problem foiling there (but yes the wind might not be amazing). Hit up Tommy at Gulfport Board Sports and Taylor at GeauxKiteLA DOT COM when you get to town!

    Thanks for taking the time to try to explain design performance. I too rode sans stab to test it out, both winging and kite foiling. Just this week I modified (5) fuses, chopped to a nib in order to mount the stab right behind the mast, and on the backside of the front wing (basically just super short). I also prefer low aspect foils (AR4.4) over high ones. I've started playing with stabs. Thanks for showing your cool stabs. My love is to surf, but since I ride small river swell I'm essentially riding 1-2 waves, so I want a super loose carvy surf like foil (think old school style skateboards used for sidewalk surfing). So currently I'm experimenting with that. I can send you photos if interested. I think I sit in my garage, like your video, and explain to myself for hours how all this stuff works.

    Buy last year’s stuff and save 30%. Tituan was doing double back flips on his three year old gear. So if it was good enough for him, last year’s gear is good enough for mere mortals. Cabrinha and Sljngshot often dump their wings after each season. They’re not the most cutting edge wing manufacturers out there but it’s quality stuff. Unathletic and older beginners should stay the hell away from the DW board and its promise of 10knot foiling. Those boards are tippy as hell and crazy to deal with in the chop. Gybing them is a trick too. Rather get a 7m wing and a 1700 sq cm HA foil and use a board 10L above your weight and then be patient for a gust.

    I have been an experienced windsurfer for 35 years, I can sail in just about any strong wind condition, I tried wingfoiling 2 years ago, I found it more difficult than expected, especially when you have mostly onshore wind conditions and choppy seas it's difficult to find balance on your knees while grabbing the sail, and even more difficult to get up, you fall all the time, if you start again it hurts your knees, I quickly gave up, I would have had to persevere because I know complete beginners in board sports who have learned and who end up navigating correctly quite quickly I write this so that people realize that it is not as easy as that and that we must not sell dreams

    I taught myself at 52 years old when I was out of shape and 235 pounds. I windsurfed badly for a few months when I was 13 and I’m an amateur sailor. No surfing experience. But I was at my Dad’s house in Florida during Covid, and he lived on a lagoon, and I had nothing better to do. I definitely bought a lot of gear and wasted money and it took me over a month to get on foil. So lessons and good video tutorials will help you save money and time. It was still the most difficult and fun thing I ever learned how to do. But 3 years later, I’ve lost 20 pounds, surfed thousands of waves, sailed in 40 knot winds, became one with universe, and met a bunch of really great people. There is no other sport like it.

    Hi Rob! I missed you at topenga that day! I am the one in the background of this video with my red wing. I think the how to series makes a lot of sense. I have been teaching my wife how to wing foil and it makes me realize just how challenging it is if you don’t have a wind sports background.

      I was wondering who that was. You were getting some nice rides! I broke one of my GoPro mounting brackets right before you guys went out so I came in and shot this video. Wanted to throw some more back flip attempts, but also ended up with a flash pump in my right forearm I couldnt get rid of. Still waiting for your address to send you a hoodie. Check your WFC private messages.

    Just FYI, the northern launching spot at the Houston Kiteboarding Club Beach is about 1.5-2 ft deeper than the launching spot at the levee. There is also a deeper spot about 500 m east from the northern launching spot at the Houston Kiteboarding Club Beach for the super shallow days. Also, the tide matters less than the wind direction for the last day or two in Texas City. If there have been north winds for a few days, the bay tends to be shallow even at high tide. South winds over a few days leads to deeper water in the bay even at low tide.

    I really like the idea of having people disclose who is paying them and providing free gear! There are so many paid reviews out there that are hard to tell if they are paid for.

    Oh god, I'm a very early beginner in this (have been up on foil half a dozen times), and that 'Finding the balance' part with you walking around/putting your feet next to eachother on the board makes me feel sick to the stomach, haha. I'm sure as I develop my balance and feel on the foil that will change, but right now: nope.

      You will! It takes time, but eventually you’ll be amazed how you the foil becomes an extension of your body. Don’t forget different foils and setups will be more stable than others. Check out my video on tuning your foil to see some ways to make it more stable (example: longer fuse, bigger tail, shimming). Keep it up! I’ll be launching a new weekly video series soon going over every beginner topic. Stay tuned for another big announcement video tomorrow.

      @@wingmanfoilclub I'm 212lbs. I've only been on foil for a few sessions. I haven't even attempted a jibe, but I'm headed to Bird Island Basin for a 4 day workshop and want to have reasonable gear. I'm on a Gong X-Over XXL foil (2200sqcm) and a 6'3" 140L Sky Wing. I don't have the right mast for BIB so I would need to either invest more in the gong system or switch to another platform. I don't know for sure, but I'm concerned that this foil is so thick that I won't be able to glide through jibes. I have a slingshot kitefoil so it would be fairly easy to add different front wing and use that. It has the right mast length for BIB (72). I might also consider a different platform if I felt like it were the right move for the longish term. I might also be needing a setup for my wife so If I don't use the slingshot setup, she might be able to. I don't understand when/why people move to systems like unifoil/omen/etc . . . or if they even make foils for people my size. If that is where I would want to end up (for example) then I would rather stick with one of my current platforms (gong/slingshot) until I'm ready for that. As far as riding style . . .I have no interest in jumping/freestyle. Right now I don't even need carvy . . . but my long-term goal is to be able to go to Quitauna beach and ride the small/medium sized waves. I may also be interested in a DW board/foil at some point (for light wind).

      @scottstout okay that helps. First join the big dawgs wingfoil group on Facebook. Being skinny is a huge advantage in winging but us big dawgs make it happen. Clinton is 250 and rips on the waves. I am 200 and do flips and stuff. For BIB I would call and talk to Olivier at Worldwinds and see if he can just rent you something since it might even require a 65cm mast at times. But big board will help with the depth issue. If he can’t help you, Jeff Howard might be able to let you borrow something in exchange for a future purchase. He’s on the other side of the bay and I think he does Slingshot. Definitely does Naish and North. I have only tried one Gong and I thought it was fine. They make good cheap stuff and have some of the best riders in the world. But I would probably go with an American friendly brand moving forward. AXIS is definitely a good option for you. They make good big foils for big riders. Lots of glide and lift. They also make a good cheap aluminum mast like 100 bucks so you could justify buying a short one for BIB. They are also modular and have a lot of options so you can just buy new foils as you progress. Call Live2Kite in the Bay Area and they can help you out if you want to go that direction. Foils are all super different. The smallest change can make them feel totally different. That’s why it’s so confusing. I ride unifoil cause they are more fun foils. They tend to focus on turning in addition to pump and glide. Another option is to buy a short Cedrus aluminum mast. Then you can use multiple different foils. You don’t need a carbon mast at this time, but you might benefit from a better aluminum mast if you’re using the super heavy Slingshot that doesn’t have a slot and just relies on the M8 screws. As for your big Gong… most bigger foils have enough glide to jibe as long as their wingspan is around 1 meter or more. It gets trickier as you go smaller foils. For smaller foils to glide they require higher aspect and some other features.
