The Last of Us - A Decade Later

I'm late to this party, but thanks to the HBO show, I am now a bona fide fan of the series. This video was fun, and easy to make, due to the beautiful simplicity of part 1's story. The same likely will not hold true for The Last of Part 2.... video coming sometime in the next decade. P.S just because I have Pedro in the thumbnail, doesn't mean I don't love Joel Miller in the game! Discord serve...

Solving the Dardusk City Gym puzzle - Pokemon Light Platinum

Great video man. Lots of genuinely well thought out and insightful commentary paired with good pacing, editing and gags. Looking forward to more 👌
Hey, thanks my man! 😄 I really appreciate it!
Let's compare seven years of Cristiano Ronaldo and Last of us part 2 then see what people think?
You'll have to forgive me, Cristiano Ronaldo / football aren't my forte. Not sure I understand the reference, lol
@@Brizzau Cristiano Ronaldo wins and Last of us part 2 loses
Lol, fair enough!
@@Brizzau Cristiano Ronaldo wins four Champions League crowns, three Club World Cups and UEFA Super Cups apiece, two LaLiga titles, a pair of Copas del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups for Real Madrid for nine years mind you Cristiano Ronaldo have more trophies than naughty dogs has with Last of us part 2.
No doubt he is one of the great football players 👍 I do like The Last of Us 2 but I think to compare, Ronaldo would be better!
great vid mr brizzau 💯 keep at it 👍🏽
Thank you, Mr Seanbehnisch6185, I will keep at it for you, my friend 😀 👍
12:43 I genuinely don't think that the ending is hopeless. Ellie manages to NOT COMPLETELY lose herself at the end. She also managed to get some sort of closure out of her trip to Santa Barbara. A BIG part of her storyline in both games has been about agency and, in her case, the lack thereof. She NEVER gets to make a proper choice for herself. Whenever she does, or she should get to make a choice, someone comes along and chooses for her. Marlene, Fireflies, Joel, Abby. Ofc guilt & PTSD were a BIG part of why she went off to Santa Barbara (it isn't REALLY about revenge at the end there), but I believe wanting to reclaim SOME of her agency has to be a reason, too. And she gets to make a choice. She loses a lot in the process tho. But I think that there is some peace, albeit a desolate one, in her heart at the end. She finally lays Joel to rest spiritually (see: how lovingly she pats that guitar down before setting it down, letting her fingers linger on its strings), and she leaves that place to hopefully find her new purpose. This was SUCH an important kernel of hope at the end of this bleak-ass game. It is why I am excited to see where the sequel takes her :)
That's a good take. I hadn't considered the agency angle, you're right, finally she does get to make the decision for herself, and realizes killing Abby isn't worth it. I agree with a kernel of hope as well, I think that the story ended the way it should have, with Ellie deciding to move forward from the whole ordeal, which is really her only choice in her situation. Certainly a sad ending, but not a bad ending, in my opinion. I'm excited for a part 3 as well, it'll be interesting to see what direction they take, given the backlash they faced from part 2.
@@Brizzau I think (at least I hope) that Naughty Dog will tell the story they wanna tell. Druckmann was asked whether he would change the story for S02 of the show given that the game got soooo much vitriol and backlash by some folks. He responded with, "I don't care". Good. He should tell the story he wants to tell. Listening to proper criticism is valid (the folks who made that Grounded II documentary for the making of TLoU2 said that the studio is very good at aggregating criticism in a meaningful way) is important, and I hope they use that stuff to improve whatever they make. But I hope they don't get deterred and make something that's safe out of fear that it'll get backlash. And I really hope that Naughty Dog continues to improve their work culture. TLoU remake was the studio's first game ever to be made without crunch. I hope they can keep the ball rolling on that.
Absolutely, the story is what it is, yes a lot of people disliked it, but there is also a large sample size, there's tons of fans of the game too. If they switch up their adaptation of the show, or throw a softball for part 3, it would be a slap in the face to the people who still enjoy the series up until this point. Hopefully, they don't play it safe and stay true. Yes, hard to defend some of the allegations against them, from what I've heard. Typically, I try to look at pieces of media independent of the creator... but if it's a continued issue, it'll have to be considered consuming their works, for sure.
@@Brizzau have you checked the Grounded II documentary yet? If not, you should. They were all quite transparent about the hardships of making TLoU2 and how they aim to eliminate crunch. They talked about some of the measures they've taken since that game's release. I truly hope they can stay true to their goal Plus, that documentary is just great. I love seeing behind the scenes stuff and there is so little stuff like that for games
I haven't, but I will certainly check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.
12:38 I have seen this sentiment being parroted by some and it has always been such a strange bit of criticism. You're telling me after being wracked with MAJOR survivor's guilt, surviving a crazy cannibal man, losing (what she believed to be) her life's purpose, finding out the person who was most important to her lied to her FOR YEARS re: her purpose, then losing that person in a fucking BRUTAL way, and feeling IMMENSE guilt about wasting the limited time she had with him... Ellie isn't acting like the hopeful, chipper young child she was in the first game?? Crazy! lol Not to mention, there was already a pretty major change in her personality near the end of the game after Winter. Not saying that you're saying this, ofc. I've just seen too damn many folks say stuff like "Ellie feels like a diff char!" or "Ellie is such a bitch!" or "this is NOT Ellie" lol
Yeah, I completely agree. Her character development isn't surprising at all to me, it's in line with what I would expect from someone who has gone through the things she's experienced. I can understand if people went into part 2 looking for that same hopeful dynamic as part 1, and felt robbed of it because of what happens to Joel and consequently Ellie, but it does seem a little dismissive to just write it off as bad writing that Ellie is changed by the constant traumas she's endured and is different than she was in the first half of part 1. Similarly, I feel the same way about Abby's character and criticize her for being an inherently evil person. Yes what she does is most certainly evil, but many so called "good people" do evil things when they experience such hardship, I'm sure in a perfect world where there are no fungi zombies, none of the characters would have done the terrible things they did... but there wouldn't be much a video game if it was just about everyone being friends lol. Thanks for the well thought out comment!
@@Brizzau I agree wrt Abby. I'm not her biggest fan (I LOVE Joel and Ellie, and Lev, Dina for ex. I just really like Abby). But I do my utter best to see things from her side and give her the context that some folks just don't. I'm glad you highlighted that bit with Dina. The only reason she says, "good" and all that is precise because she legit thinks that Ellie KNOWINGLY killed a pregnant Mel (she didn't). But yeah. I don't care if folks don't like Part 2, I just wish for em to go in with an open mind and give it a fair chance, cuz I deeply love this game and think it's great. I'll often see TH-camrs or streamers put out episodes of playthroughs for the first game. And right in the comments for the first game, people are already talking about how the second game is bad and not worth playing. And like... Stfu lol. Why are we talking about the second game NOW?? Just let people play the damn thing and make up their own mind about it, regardless of whether they think it's a masterpiece, mid, or trash. But yeah, good video, dude. I was a bit apprehensive cuz of the thumbnail, but I'm glad I gave it a chance lol
Likewise, I'm not a huge fan of Abby's, but she plays her part well, and it's to be expected that the audience isn't going to think she's the highlight of the game, given that she kills the main character for the first game. just because she isn't as likable as the characters we already know, doesn't mean that her motivations are completely out of left field. To be fair, I think lots of people who don't like the game understand this, but just don't care, which is fine as well. Agreed, I liked the game, by making a video about it, I almost feel I've likely opened myself up to intense discourse around it. I think it's simple enough to just say I liked the game, but TLO2 definitely has a strange effect going on, the fact that people are still so passionately discussing the game (whether they like it or not) all this time after its release certainly says something. What that something is, I suppose I can only guess at, lol. Thanks for the kind words, my friend! I wanted the thumbnail to find some levity in the dark aspects of the story... hopefully it isn't too abrasive, lol!
@@Brizzau yeah, putting one's hand in the boiling pot that is internet discourse is certainly a price one has to pay :/ I first watched this game in late 2014/early 2015, and just fell in love with it (didn't have a console, still don't. I've only gotten to play these games via PS Now or borrowing a friend's PS4 for 4 days on TLOU2's launch day. And ofc, I did get the remake for the PC), and I think these games rock. And I genuinely love certain works of art with a deep passion and I love talking about that, even with folks who disagree. It is fun! Just sucks that some folks choose to make it not that way lol. Being online during the time of the leaks was AWFUL. I was straight up spoiled that Joel dies in the game and that someone named Abby kills him A WEEK BEFORE THE GAME CAME OUT. After I had waited YEARS for this game. And I was trying to take measures to protect myself from the rampant spoilers (true ones, but also the untrue ones. There was, and still is, so much damn misinformation about this game online), when someone actively spoiled it for me. Thankfully, the timing and the way it happened was still a surprise lol. Anyways, good video! I look forward to Part 2's PC Port. I hope it has a smoother launch that Part 1's PC port had lol (I was one of the 50% of players for whom the game ran great on launch. Thankfully, they did end up fixing the whole thing in the weeks after the release).
I was late to the series, just played the first game in the Winter (after watching the TV show, made a video about the first game as well). Luckily, that means I missed the leaks... yeah, that would suck big time, very glad I missed that whirlwind. Thanks again for the kind words! I too enjoy having a good discussion with people, even if they don't agree with me. Of course, big difference between someone who doesn't agree with you, and someone who is personally offended whether you liked a game or not. Thankfully, that hasn't happened to me quite yet, lol! It's worth the risk of sticking my hand into the internet boiling point, it's fun to make videos and have people enjoy them/discuss it with me, all worth it for the comments like yours, so very much appreciated.
⬇👍⬇ Thumbs up for Team Hot Pile of Shit

I would personally love if the devs added a dlc for us to play as naked Abby…
That's the only way this game could be a 10/10
You should learn to think for yourself
Nuh uh

lol
This entire remake is a giant let down I don't know how anyone who grew up from the original can find anything related to it. The Ever Crisis app game even does better and that's weird.
Perhaps I'm more easily entertained than others, there are certainly disappointing aspects to the remake series. That being said, I do enjoy it so far, mostly because of the gameplay and with the nostalgia tied in. Haven't dipped my toes into Ever Crisis yet!
@@Brizzau I was obsessed with the original and maybe that's why my bias is so strong. I'm sure once the third part comes out I'll play all three through together and probably see it for what it is. Thanks for the response, good video.
I'm really hoping they lean more into the gameplay aspects in part 3. But, I imagine they might do something crazy with the story that will have us all scratching our heads, lol. and thank you for the kind words, my friend!
@@Brizzau Nomura is definitely surprising in everything he writes. I still love Advent Children and the current remake fits perfectly with that type of story. If it wasn't for the 97 version I would likely be obsessed with this current series. The visuals obviously are beyond words.
Definitely on Nomura... I am still struggling to understand Kingdom Hearts after all of these years lol. I fear that the story may turn away new potential fans. I think it's really hard to recapture the magic of such a beloved game, as well. It's almost never going to stand up completely to the source material, in a way it's definitely a cash grab, especially being 3 separate games. Here's hoping they can deliver on part 3.
Nice vid but couldn't disagree more. 40 yo here also ff7 was my first story video game. How to put it in words...OG was The Godfather to re-trilogy being marvel cinematic universe. A piece of art to a shill for numbers. Of course they got great elements from og so the game isn't really that bad. But compared to a great game like Bioshock or ff7 it is mediocre. It is compounded by it being a trilogy and all the padding plus pacing issues coming from it. Rebirth is leagues better as a game from remake but remake has that depressing charm of og. And wtf happened to the music. OG ost is legendary, remake is a great reedition and rebirth? While not being bad except few new tracks it's actually worse than them both.
I think the Godfather/Marvel comparison makes sense. They're certainly shooting for a more "complex" narrative with the multiverse bits... complex narratives really aren't their strong suit, I'd say, Kingdom Hearts being another good example of the limitations of this type of narrative from Square Enix. Mostly, I find the overall gameplay loop enjoyable. Combat is fun, lots of cool boss fights and set pieces, these are the aspects they should lean into the most for part 3, in my opinion. I'm excited to see the Ruby/Emerald weapon and Safer Sephiroth fights, for example. I wouldn't call this a 10/10 by any means, there have been better games in the past 4 years than both Remake and Rebirth, but in terms of making something you can sink your teeth into and have some fun, I enjoyed it.
3:42 - 3:50 5:31 - 5:36 Someone get this man an Oscar 🏆😭
Catch me in FF Remake part 3 as the voice of Diamond weapon
Hiring Christopher Nolan is a tall ask, but at this point I felt so frustrated and betrayed after playing through rebirth...that yeah, it's the only way I'll ever consider buying the last part of this game. The story telling was so odd...And I DID enjoy a lot of the game, but god the writing...esp just throwing away whole iconic parts of the OG was so numbing....
I think it's a lot more noticeable nowadays with voice acting etc. the shortcomings of the writing and story direction that Square Enix sometimes takes. Especially in something as beloved as FFVII. I hope they do something to tie it all together and make all of the original fans happy. But... I am half expecting some Kingdom Hearts type nonsense that leaves us scratching our heads... lol. If not, hopefully they at least do Ruby/Emerald weapons and the gameplay justice!
