Vintage Swimsuit from a Dress Pattern: Part 2
Are you ready for Part 2?? If you missed Part 1, go back and give it a watch. In this episode I’ll be glazing over the sewing construction details of my 1950s inspired bathing suit for the Peg City Pinup Pageant! The swimsuit is based on a 1956 Miriam Martin dress pattern, and turns out: Yes, you CAN turn a dress pattern into a swimsuit (if you’re so inclined).
If you’ve seen Part 1, get ready for all the good stuff including the big reveal, clips of the pageant weekend, and more! Stay to the end to see how I did!
I'd like to give a huge shoutout to my friend Mila for all her help backstage and my partner Pat for always being my biggest supporter. Also shout out to all my competitors for making this year's competition so fierce. Everyone brought their A-game, and it was so great to see. I can hardly wait for next year's Pageant!
Let me know in the comments if you like this two-part series format. I read each and every one of your comments and they mean so much to me. Thanks for watching and don’t forget to subscribe for more!

Vintage Swimsuit from a Dress Pattern: Part 1
มุมมอง 3.3K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
In preparation for the 2024 Peg City Pin-up Pageant I’m making a 1950s bathing suit! I’m up sewing creek without a pattern (yikes, that one didn’t make the final cut for this video, but had to share). I’m super excited to take part in my first ever Pin up pageant and of course I’m sewing as many of my vintage-inspired items as I can. This bathing suit is made from non-stretch fabric (send thoug...

I’ll even take you with me to the Prairie Strides antique and flea market at the end and show you what I brought home. I'll share my take on Gertie’s Ultimate Dress Book and Gertie Sews Jiffy Dresses. Spoiler...

Is this a Christmas video launching in February? Yes, yes it is. But think o...

I got ballpoint pen ink out of cotton with rubbing alcohol. Not sure if that would work on your silky lining but thought I'd mention it.

Ladies and gentlemen, please give a warm round of applause for Miss Elizabeth Taylor!! (You're not a blond, so I can't really make a Marilyn Monroe or Jayne Mansfield reference lol) Congrats on the win! That's impressive! And I so love that instead of all the high-end stuff available in Winterpeg, you ordered good ol' McD's to celebrate lol I was in there about three weeks ago (doc appointment for my better half, so we took advantage of being in town to go shopping afterwards since EVERYTHING is significantly cheaper in Winterpeg than out here in No-Man's Land), and it took three clerks 15 full minutes to punch up the bill when we were done at Fabricland lol about the only thing I didn't come home with (for which I'm now kicking myself repeatedly) was the bridal silk standing beside the cutting table, sensuously calling my name. (And of course my wife discovered her new old obsession with buttons, too, so that didn't help matters any.) I probably should have wedged that crowbar into my wallet a little harder and gotten some, but with most of my excess cash still running around the pen behind the barn (and what I had left already earmarked for various items around the farm (like seed, fertilizer, fuel, new bulls, children (geez, they're getting expensive these days lol), new/more fruit trees, etc etc)), I figured the banker might be a little irritable about having to remind me (again) about the virtues of not exceeding my account limits without previously informing her of an impending expense of such luxury and largess. Usually when that happens there's a small-ish mushroom cloud that appears over top of the bank that I can see from home, and I'm 15 miles outta town. But we did get some linen, and it's now stored behind an electrified chain-link fence topped with razor wire to keep it outta the hands of the kidlets (ok, maybe not THAT much security, but it is hiding until I get around to making some summer dresses for my better half and the girls for wandering around the gardens and the orchards, like they're living in England in 1458, and not modern-day south-central Manitoba). If I had an extra field this year, I'd plant some flax in which they could frolic for pictures, but alas, they'll have to make do this year with Grandpa's garden sunflowers, if they're not 19 feet tall again.

roflmao "I'm all about confusing historians" Best line I've heard this year yet lol My favorite material for mock-ups are old bedsheets, which you can usually source at the thrift store for pennies on the dollar. And every time I hear someone say they should've read the instructions, I'm reminded of an old Dennis The Menace cartoon where he's standing in front of his father holding a broken toy going "But Dad, I READ the destructions!" Don't worry, we've all sewed something in backwards, upside down, and/or both lol I did that about half a dozen times with the cups on the first couple bras I made my wife back when I was re-learning how to sew (talk about jumping off the deep end, eh? I had little choice when she walked in one day, ripped her bra off, balled it up, hurled it at the garbage can, bouncing it off the rim, the buffet, the wall, the dog and a passing child and landing it back in the garbage can, yelling "I HATE THIS THING!!!", to which my response was "Hello, TH-cam Polytechnic? I'd like to enroll in your lingerie construction courses, please"). I was beginning to think I was gonna have to go back and retake all my algebra and trigonometry if I didn't figure out what I was doing wrong in a hurry lol But it all worked out eventually (I'm thinking starting off with the burrito method wasn't the best choice for a newbie), and now that she's back at a stable size again (post-surgery hormone issues, sadly), I can start making her some more again, and maybe even a dress or two (if she can find a pattern she likes, that is, or else I'm gonna have to kit-bash several patterns into one somehow, and the conversation for that particular endeavor usually goes something like this: Her: "Honey, what do you think of these trumpet sleeves with that bodice?" Me: "Trumpet sleeves? You stiffen that one end, and John Phillip Sousa's gonna crawl outta his grave to start playing 'Hail The Conquering Hero' with 'em!" Her: "But they look so cute like that!" Me: "Cute??? CUTE???!!! You start waving at someone with sleeves like that and Environment Canada's gonna be issuing a tornado warning in about five minutes!! Those things are so big we're gonna have to mortgage one of the children to get enough material to make 'em!!" Her: "But they're so cute I'm just gonna die without them!!!" Me: "You're gonna die WITH them if you walk outside on a windy day. Chances are a strong breeze would pick you up and carry you through the air and drop you on the other side of the Red!! Catch a good breeze on this side of Lake Manitoba, and you could hydroplane across the lake all the way to your folks' place! All you'd have to do is tie your shoe laces to the bottom of the bell on those sleeves and wear a set of water skis!" (Ok, ok, maybe not THAT dramatic, but you get the point lol)). Geez, I need a vacation. I'm starting to sound like Statler & Waldorf and Patrick F. MacManus again lol All that being said, I do like that pattern and the modifications you made to it. That should make a great bathing suit, and if you really wanted to top off the outfit, a kerchief made out of the same material would likely crown it right off. (It'd look even better behind the wheel of a '56 Corvette convertible, but they might object to the use of a vehicle on the runway lol though it'd be quite the sight at the local show n shine at Pony Corral, if it's still around, that is)
