Pigment application on the Academy Hetzer
มุมมอง 6K6 ปีที่แล้ว
This will be the first in a series of installments aimed at fixing things that need to be fixed. For this video, I wanted to revist the Academy 1/35 Early Hetzer by adding some pigments by Mig and AK Interactive to the underside of the model to tie in the effects on the rest of the tank. For this I used a combination of Tamiya X-20A and Ammo Pigment Fixer for the application.

    That F-4E of yours looks fantastic.!..I really like your weathering as too much on a F-4 ruins her..But yours is just right being subtle but present and with the right touch of chippping..Also you can’t go too far wrong with Mr.Color.. I value the feedback. I have to say I don't think I'm putting anymore effort into them honestly. The work to benefit ratio doesn't seem all that worth it. I feel like just doing quick full format videos is much more useful. Thought I'd try at least but I genuinely don't like it

      @Bruce The Model Noob oh most certainly. I also just dont see how 60 seconds is enough time to be useful in this particular niche. I'm fact, I didn't know they had to be a minute. He's back! Welcome back Voldemort..I mean Jim - love the Phantom and I totally get the black basing doesn't fit every painting opportunity. I used dark brown for a warmer result on my Mig-31, so I think you're quite right that black is really only for a cold grey, like the underside of naval aviation perhaps, and maybe to dull down some normally warm colours. I'm looking forward to more from you, what's next on the bench? Cheers Chris

    • @jimsmodels
      @jimsmodels 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for checking out the video. My problem right now is I want to build everything. Over Christmas I asked for a 32nd A-4 and Skyraider because I was feeling those. But some aftermarket became avaliable that I was waiting for for the Revell F-4G so it looks like I'm on that path. Just really digging Phantoms and the bench time. Been therapeutic

  • @tomhutchins7495
    @tomhutchins7495 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good to see you back, missed you. The Phantom looks pretty cool. I've been having a similar issue with direct black basing where the colour gap from black to top colour is too much to close easily, and that it seems helpful to go about halfway and mess around with a darker colour underneath the top coat. It keeps the subtle variation that we want but makes it easier to find the nice zone between a blotchy finish and a smooth one.

    • @jimsmodels
      @jimsmodels 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you kindly. It's good to be back at the bench for sure. I hope all is well. "Color gap" is a great way to describe the issue I've been finding. I think there's a lot of experimenting in my future for sure with more appropriate undercoats.

    Excellent video. Cleared a lot of my doubts. Funny thing is while i started brushing thinner x20a like you did but the paint came off immediately. Maybe because I used the same thinner to paint (tamiya)? IDK. Should I "seal" it with varnish first next time? Gladly is the bottom and applying a good amount of pigment covered everything.

  • @TechNinja

    Thanks for the great video! Still new to black basing so this will help along the way. How would you pick out the underlying marble color on for example multi color camo paterns?

    • @jimsmodels
      @jimsmodels 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In that instance I do the same process. I just map out the camo pattern and don't overspray into areas where the other color(s) go. With a detail airbrush and spraying small this is pretty straightforward. Then you can mask if you wany to or freehand the next color. If that seems confusing let me know and I'll try and explain better

    • @seanerk5kt9
      @seanerk5kt9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m probably in the minority but I use white as my marble layer and on multi colored camo schemes, I spray the first camo color in roughly the area I want it, mask it, then touch up the edges around the masks with black/ white...rinse and repeat. Although it’s a little extra work, I’ve found that it keeps the weathering consistent throughout the demarcation of camo colors...I’ve only done it using hard edge camo patterns and might be a little more difficult with softer edges. I posted a video using this technique on a 1/32 Horten Ho 229. Some good videos btw Jim, It’s nice to know there are other dorks out there like me ;). Subbed. Sean

    • @kylwell
      @kylwell 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, used them on my last 3. I do know they can be a tad sensitive to contaminates and know a few people in more humid areas have had issues but they've also had issues with clear acrylics. Still sticky after 3 years... could be all three. Have you tried a hair dryer? See if the warm dry air will help it cure. I know a guy who is a paint junkie (he owns god knows how many brands) I'll see if he has any idea.

    Hey Jim, 2 quick things 1. The way you have your brushes resting on their bristles is giving me the heebie-jeebies. Stop that! You'll destroy them! 2. I find a much more realistic effect on the front and rear lower hull is to splatter the pigments on. I mix them with thinner and flick them on. The method you show on your video works good for the hill sides and wheels, but to me, a splattered effect looks better on the front and rear. 3. I am loving your videos
