First sailing channel that is not a cooking video, just sailing !maybe is just me that I hate to see cooking on a sailing channel. Amazing video
Glad you liked it😊
In the words of Tom Cunliffe, "Get a solid full stove! Sort out your life!" While I am away from the boat healing up I am staring at a cast iron C Portway Tortoise stove beside the desk that will be replacing a steel plate stove we have never truly loved. Thanks for posting. It's perfect on this chilly night! <3 Cheers!
Glad you joined us😊
Boat is gorgeous. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Good job mate.
Thanks for the visit
Actually, I’m pretty sure they are a harbour porpoise.
What a masterpiece! Actually 2! Beautiful boats, you guys are artists.
Thanks for watching!
Good sailing I enjoyed being there 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
A labour of love!
Thanks for watching!
Nice test for her, looks like she came through it very well. Enjoyable vid thanks
Yes, Eleutheros came through very well. 👍🏻
Great video , i will be doing the same trip solo as well soon . What was the date of departure ? Ok I found it , October 18 , a little early , Im thinking of a November first departure , just to be sure the hurricanes have cleared out .
The general thinking from those on the east coast of Canada, is to take an early opportunity if it presents. Otherwise, some years opportunities can be very few later and some have been stuck in Canada for the winter. Thanks for watching.
@ yeah it’s a crap shoot . Leave early run into a straggler . Leave late and never get a window .
I will be sailing my Bristol 45.5 she can handle a lot of bad weather , she hoves too very well if I need to get some rest .
Nice video I have a question for you as I am going to attempt the same passage this year, what date did you depart from Nova Scotia
I departed October 18. Four other boats left from Nova Scotia that day, and the Spirit of Bermuda left the day bey.
Beautiful boat. Terrible time to sail in the North Atlantic Ocean. Glad you made it. You might not'n have.
Great seamanship, Mark. I am interested to know more about your sheet to tiller setup. I tried it myself (on my sloop) but never got it to work properly. Maybe special bonus episode on that?
I plan on specifically doing some filming of the sheet to tiller on my next passage, especially now that I have everything working really well.
@@eleutheros Looking forward to that.
New subscriber here. Beautiful sailing vessel man. I hope to meet ya out there. I’m off Vancouver Canada.
Thanks for watching
this was a very good video, nice work. and please let me know what kind of camera was used the videography is absolutely stunning.
I am using a GoPro for my video.
Wow. That was great😊.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful wood boat
Thanks for watching 👍🏻
you built that? very nice! i'm a little uneasy about glued seams, but, with the modern adhesives, i'm sure it's fine. after all, those west boats are almost all glue. motors are great till they stop working.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻😁
you did it! i am happy for you. how does it feel?
It was quite a challenge at the time. I have gained greater confidence in the boat and what it can handle, and I’ve gained valuable experience as well.
@@eleutheros yes to all the above. i watched the video again and noticed that nothing broke in the gale, nor did she take on water. so you built her well. i am going out tonight for a pint in your honor!
fine looking boat! i never got used to sleeping on boat when solo sailing. the guitar is good, too. reef points would neaten up your furling...
Sleeping while solo is a very different experience, and difficult for me to express to someone that hasn’t done it before, and that was me before this passage.
Oh yes what is your boat..shes a beautiful one.
She is based on Francis Herreshoff’s design 99, and is about three feet longer with a few other modifications.
Not exactly sure why,,but as a new sailor i found this to be very informative. In that hands on and visual was one and the same. Thank you...hope to see more.
Glad to hear it was helpful.
fantastic and inspirational, so good to see beautiful simple well built wooden yacht not packed with gadgets doing a big passage, i appreciate your humble narrative too. thank you very much for sharing
I'm glad you found it inspirational.
Smart jack lines ...assuming the handrails are through bolted. Love your videos Thanks!
They are through bolted, and thanks for watching! 👍🏻
Bravo! I’ve been waiting anxiously for this episode. Actually, filming this in something like “Super 8” would have been a nice touch.
Editing super 8 might be a bit of a headache though 😁
best sailing channel ever! ... in the current year
Thank you👍🏻
👍
The gimbal mount for the camera really puts the viewer on the boat; I appreciate the effort to capture that. Also happy to see someone make that run using only sheet-to-tiller... maybe you could show us the details of that sometime...?
That is the horizon lock feature on the GoPro which really works good. Now that I’ve really worked out my sheet to tiller arrangements, I definitely plan on documenting it in a future video. 👍🏻
Well done Skipper.
Good on you sir good on you and your boat Thanks for the video
Eleutheros really looked after me 👍🏻
Bad time to sail to Bermuda. Glad you made it ok.
4 other boats left for Bermuda at that time, from Nova Scotia, including Spirit of Bermuda and many from the USA too. It seems that even Chris Parker was caught off guard by this storm. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Thank you for watching my first-ever solo offshore passage to Bermuda! This journey was an incredible mix of challenges and unforgettable moments, from navigating post-tropical storm Oscar to seeing dolphins along the way. Nice
Impressive! The amount of brightwork is giving me panic attacks though. Varnish PTSD.
The topsides are the easy part, it’s the rest of the varnish work that keeps me awake at night. 👍🏻
Looking smart, Cap.
Great looking double ender. What design is she? Some big winds and handled well
She is a scaled up version of Francis Herreshoff’s design 99. You can learn more on th-cam.com/video/KybLbL5PpnQ/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/adPgw0YQodg/w-d-xo.html
@@eleutheroscool. Will look that up. Just saw your prepfor Bermuda. Will be watching
Loved the mounting details, threaded holes with epoxy, gorilla glue on the screw threads!! Both reefing lines seem to lead to the same side of the sail instead of the sail in between the up line and down line? Yes we just subscribed, loved this video. Jeff and Julie s/v OoLaLa Westsail 32 hull#81
Leading the lines that way prevents the sail from being bunched up under the reefing lines. I saw it done that way years ago, but forget what they call it. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
Nice reefing setup. Good luck with the passage.
It worked well on the trip down. 👍🏻
Could you please explain why you need to have a line with a stopper knot? i.e. purpose of the extra line.
@@bobstephens410 each reefing line runs from the mast back along the boom to the cheek block up to the corresponding reefing clew and down to the wooden block where it is terminated with a stopper knot. 👍🏻
@@bobstephens410 there will be some footage in the next episode that shows it from a different angle, and how it works.
Bermuda is Mark’s destination in the next episode. Be sure to subscribe and enable notifications, to join Eleutheros as she sails into the North Atlantic.
Are these out of order didn't he post a headed for Bermuda back in July or Oct?
Can't wait to see this. I wouldn't be able to sleep. Maybe catnaps in daylight. You're braver than I.
@@bviyachtsales we posted a channel up date in October about plans for sailing to Bermuda. Next episode will be footage from that passage. 👍🏻
@@eleutheros awesome !
Whats the matter Mark? No room for the dining room table in one piece? LOL
I would have build the boat around the table😂
@@eleutheros LOL
I used to tell students when you think reef, reef.
Yes, and practice so that it’s second nature when the weather is actually rough. 👍🏻
@@eleutheros Aye Captain.
Simple , straight forward and it works , couldn't ask for anything more .
Yes, I did get to test it in some serious weather. 👍🏻
Mastercraft lesson in impeccable building skills and is a visual masterpiece, well done on whats probably the finest vessels ive ever seen, a production boat doesnt even come close
Thank you
Wow. That was pretty rough.
We were rolling around a bit
What a great boat she is.
@@gertboerman3666 She is a real pleasure to sail.
Happy new year...keep warm.
We are warm, thank you. 👍🏻
If you stuffed it with charcoal, how long would it burn? if You closed it, would it burn longer? Are you heating anything in the copper kettle? Does Copper introduce toxins into any food or drinks heated in it?
Normally I never burn it with the door open. I can fit a 4” round by 9” log in the stove, and it will burn an hour and a half with it throttled down. Kettle has some water in it, which we can use for tea or coffee.
