    Coal'd blood is a great example. I've had to go in and sew a few places in it's repair but otherwise the thing is pretty neat.

    As a hammer user for 3 years. Switched to Plus plus for a year and a half. Modding has been a breeze so far. I did the whole song and dance of compiling source engine from a uncompiled master long ago. Been making custom content for the mod. Today marks the day that I gutted the last of the valve assets from the mod. Give me one more year of cooking, and I'm going to pay the Steam Direct fee to publish it. 100usd is a steal.

    Great video! I watched the whole thing. I was using displacements almost completely wrong. I finally have a good workflow going and I'm so happy. Biggest thing was that I had no idea that you could select two displacements at once to edit so I was using massive chunks that messed up my resolution. Thanks for this 😊

    I know there's some people here in the comments kinda being rude about the tutorial being really long and non-specific in nature of what's shown but like Honestly I learn so much more by watching someone naturally work in the program than in a short video with barely any context. Watching the process in detail and especially being told WHY to do/not do a thing sticks in my memory a lot better. Wanting to make custom L4D2 maps so unfortunately I'm stuck with old Hammer (++ isn't compatible) but eyy I'm excited to apply what I've seen here. Feels like a lot of the even recent L4D2 Hammer tutorials I've seen barely gloss over displacements and really only show some janky ground cover, so this gives me a much better idea to work with. Feels like I could understand what I'm reading about in the Source Wiki better as well, with that in mind. Kudos on the tutorial man. 👍

      Just saw this comment and if you didn't know, the most recent update of hammer++ added experimental support for L4D2 in case you're still mapping for it!

    I've got about 5 years experience with Hammer and since I normally create more militaristic/facility styled maps, I tend to struggle with displacements especially cliffs, mountains, rocks, etc. When I do use displacements, I tend to make "islandy" which tends to be very erratic in shape and form which I don't really do too well on and it turns out mediocre - generally the end result will be a boxy looking area which doesn't look natural at all but rather artifical. After watching this, I can't wait to employ these new strategies that I've never known before and make far better terrain compared to what I've molded in the past. Truly appreciate the video, needs more recognition!

    Making everything from one solid sewed displacement isn't the best looking, it's better to add details by creating one face rocks from displacement and cover walls with that. Hard edges of combined rock walls make is look more realistic.

    when you create a map like this... how do you avoid getting leaks on the map? Do you just make a big skybox cube and start putting stuff in?

    • @totesamazeballs
      @totesamazeballs ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I really needed to have a lower capture rate for that section of the process. Basically until the very final passes I do (sound, overlays, cables, any other small detail additions) I keep everything just cordoned for testing/looks. Before I start to seal I create the 3d skybox, you'll notice there are a lot of background cards, trees, and the satellites that I put in because they would kind of cumbersome to seal without making a huge box. From there I try to place big blocks as close to the edge displacement geometry as I can, making corners and shaping the seal to the existing geometry, I sort of shrink wrap the map from a huge box in this case just because of how open the layout is, practically the only thing really separated in any capacity is the exit cave corridor and elevator. However in springtime I am able to divide the map in half (chamber area and vista) because of a big cliff, this cuts vis and makes it so I can have each respective half render one at a time.
