But what happens if your Apple Development Certificate expires? And more importantly, how can you fix it? In this video, we'll cover everything you need to know. So, let's get started!
First, let's understand what an Apple Development Certificate is. This certificate is issued by Apple and allows you to run iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS apps on real devices for testing. Without this certificate, you won't be able to test or install your app on any Apple device.
This certificate is only valid for a limited period, usually one year. Once it expires, you may face some issues that can affect your app development process.
So, what exactly happens if your Apple Development Certificate expires?
Existing Apps on the App Store are Unaffected:
If you’ve already published an app on the App Store, it will continue to work for users without any issues. The expiration of the certificate does not impact live apps.
1. You Can't Install New Builds:
You won't be able to install new builds of your app on test devices. This means you can't run or test your app on any Apple device until the certificate is renewed.
2. Push Notifications Might Stop Working:
If you're using Push Notifications, they may stop working, especially in Development or Sandbox environments.
3. Errors in Xcode:
You’ll see error messages in Xcode like “No valid iOS Distribution certificate” or “No signing certificate found.”
Now, let’s go through the steps to renew your expired Apple Development Certificate:
Step 1: Log in to Your Apple Developer Account
Go to developer.apple.com and log in with your Apple ID.
Step 2: Go to Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles
After logging in, navigate to the “Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles” section.
Step 3: Create a New Certificate
Click on “Certificates,” then click the “+” button to create a new certificate.
Select Certificate Type - Choose either Development or Distribution.
Upload CSR File - Generate a new Certificate Signing Request (CSR) file from your Mac’s Keychain Access and upload it.
Step 4: Download & Install the Certificate
Once the certificate is generated, download it and install it on your system.
Step 5: Update Xcode
Open Xcode and go to Preferences. In the Accounts section, sign in with your Apple ID, go to “Manage Certificates,” and add the new certificate.
Here are a few extra tips to keep in mind:
1. Renew Before Expiry:
It’s a good practice to renew your certificate a few weeks before it expires to avoid any last-minute issues.
2. Update Push Notification Keys:
If you’re using Push Notifications, remember to update your keys and provisioning profiles after renewing the certificate.
3. Enable Automated Alerts:
Turn on notifications in your Apple Developer Account so you get alerts before your certificates expire.
