Matt, Bill Shankly and Joe Mercer. True gentlemen managers who revolutionised the English game. No disrespect to other big clubs, but when I was a kid these men weren't just in charge of the football club, they were in charge of their respective cities. Salford, Liverpool and Manchester. God bless them all and what they gave to us.

I wish I could remember where I found it, but about thirty years ago I found a brilliant article that starts with one of the journalists saying "I'm not getting on that plane." The premise is that it triggers everyone refusing to board. The upshot is Utd forfeits two points against Wolves, which causes huge controversy of course, and also virtually gifts the title to Stan Cullis's men, but more importantly, Munich never happens. I can only remember bits, like Geoff Bent is signed by Everton before the end of the season and goes on to be a key man in their '63 title winners. Tommy Taylor leaves Old Trafford in 1961 as Alf Ramsey sees him as the key to Ipswich's promotion push. He captains the '62 title winners and becomes a legend at Middlesbrough where he delivers their only ever First Division title in 1975 as boss. In the 21st century, they play in the Tommy Taylor stadium. Duncan Edwards so impresses Milan in the 58 European semi-finals that they offer him a king's ransom. He signs and spends three years in Italy before being lured back by Bill Nicholson to join Spurs in the summer of 1961. Edwards plays in the 1966 World cup final [but instead of Nobby Stiles, not Bobby Moore] The defeat to Scotland in 1967 is his last cap. He follows Denis Viollet to the states in 1968, but returns in the 70s to become assistant boss to Tommy Docherty at Old Trafford. Edwards is briefly named boss in 1977/78 but it doesn't work out and he steps back into the coaching staff after two underwhelming seasons.

I'm an life long Arsenal fan but boy I do envy man United's history. All credit do go to Sir Matt, even in his difficult time he did stand by his values and moral, build a foundation for generations to follow and no matter how much money be pumped in today's football they can't have a history like this. Proud of the Busby way, salute.

HE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE GREATEST FOOTBALLER ENGLAND EVER PRODUCED HAD IT NOT FOR THE ILL FATED MUNICH AIR DISASTER OF 6 FEBRUARY 1958. DUNCAN EDWARDS WOULD HAVE BEEN 30 IN 1966 WHEN ENGLAND WON THE WORLD CUP AT WEMBLEY.INSTEAD OF BOBBY MOORE EDWARDS WOULD HAVE BEEN THE SKIPPER HOLDING ALOFT THE JULES RIMET. AND THE BUSBY BABES WOULD AND COULD HAVE DOMINATED ENGLISH FOOTBALL THROUGH THE SIXTIES WITH EDWARDS AROUND. SIR BOBBY CHARLTON ONCE REMARKED OF EDWARDS:"OF ALL THE FOOTBALLERS THE ONE FOOTBALLER WHO MAKES ME FEEL VERY INFERIOR IS EDWARDS.I THOUGHT I WAS GOOD BUT HE WAS THE BEST." IT WAS SO TRAGIC AND PAINFUL FOR SIR WALTER WINTERBOTTOM AND ENGLAND TO HAVE TO DO WITHOUT TOMMY TAYLOR,ROGER BYRNE AND MOST OF ALL DUNCAN EDWARDS FOR THE 1958 WORLD CUP IN SWEDEN.THE LOSS OF DUNCAN EDWARDS WAS REALLY FELT.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON ONLY 20 AT THE TIME OF THE MUNICH CRASH THAT CLAIMED THE LIVES OF MANY OF HIS MANCHESTER UNITED TEAMS WHICH INCLUDED ENGLAND INTERNATIONALS ROGER BYRNE,TOMMY TAYLOR AND OF COURSE EDWARDS HIMSELF NOT LONG AFTER,HAD REMARJED:"IF ANY FOOTBALLER WHO HAD MADE ME FEEL VERY INFERIOR IT WAS DUNCAN EDWARDS.HE WOULD AND COULD HAVE BEEN ENGLAND'S GREATEST EVER PLAYER SINCE THE WAR."

Our father, a keen Manchester CITY supporter, was always a little annoyed that my brother and I wanted to support MUFC. Finally relenting, he said that we could go to the next home game at Old Trafford. This was the match. He and I will never forget that night. We, with tens of thousands of other supporters I'm sure, often think of what might have been!

To have taken on United when all was in ruin after the war then build three fantastic teams and finally turning tragedy into triumph fulfilling the dream of being the first English club to win the European cup! Sir Matt was the best manager ever. God bless the great man. From a Salford red.

What must have been going through Harry Greggs mind? A couple of weeks earlier he was playing with one of the most promising group of players in the history of football. From his perspective too he could see the whole team in front of him. No disrespect to anyone who came in to replace the deceased players (what a sad honour), but there's no way they could lace the boots of those who passed away. It must have seemed like such a nightmare, surrounded by strangers and ghosts. Such strength to be able to play through that. It seems rough that he left the season before United won the European cup in 1968.

One of my last drunks in the UK, Partying with George Best One of the best football players whoever lived. I found him in his pub in London. He played for many great football clubs one of them my favorite English team, Manchester United. It was just about when I left London in 1989 running away from my addiction ending up in Vancouver Canada. I got sober thank god and he didn't. He was a lot of fun and what a party we had. I seen how much he drank and I was drinking the same amounts. After I ran out of money and got sober after I found AA in Canada, I was just lucky. I did read somewhere that he had to get a liver transplant and I did hope that he would get sober but he just could not. We drank champagne Dom Perignon champagne at 200 pounds per bottle and that was a lot of money back then. I hoped he would get the help he needed but no, So So sad. I will never forget. I will say that meeting him helped me in a roundabout way because I got the chance to what I was in for if I did not stop drinking.
