NOAA in the Caribbean Community Group Meeting (July 19, 2024)
NOAA in the Caribbean is a forum to improve engagement, communication, coordination, and collaboration between NOAA and partners working in the Caribbean to more effectively and efficiently deliver services. Historically, NOAA in the Caribbean has focused on the United States, but we are working to expand our reach to international partners as well.
We hold Community Group meetings every two months on the third Friday where we invite NOAA and partner speakers to join and speak on their work in the region. Community Group meetings are open to anyone who is interested in hearing more about NOAA's role in the Caribbean. These meetings also serve as a platform to share information, announcements, and updates with other members.
This meeting was held and recorded on July 19, 2024 and featured two presentations:
Presentation 1:
Title: Using a Web-Based Tool to Forecast Local Variations in Wet Bulb Globe Temperature Across Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands
Speakers: Dr. Chris Furhmann and Dr. Chip Konrad
Affiliation: NOAA's Southeast Regional Climate Center (SERCC)
Presentation 2:

Generally speaking, most Hurricanes begin in the same general area off the West Coast of Africa and Travel West across the Atlantic .. we know that they feed off of warm waters - the hotter the better .. two questions: A] Has anyone figured what makes a storm travel either North or South of the Major Caribbean Islands - Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico .. -- .. and B] What makes a storm travel either into the Gulf or turn North and travel along the US East Coast -- is it following the hottest water? or are there other weather patterns [hi/low pressure, winds aloft, etc] that affect the track taken by any specific storm? ..
