    I do the 1, ha, ha, ha thing most every day. I do it often enough that the kids have picked up and will do it sometimes. The daughter who is a nurse had a huge fail that she blamed me for. She was dressing an elderly patient and after the first leg she said 1, ha, ha. When she returned home that evening she cursed me for her doing the Count with a patient. I personally consider it a win. I built myself a smokeless burn barrel and had a huge cleanup of man glitter, chips, leaves etc last year prior to fire restrictions. The smokeless makes a huge difference and having nice bare earth is a pleasant change as well.

    • @TheRuralProject
      @TheRuralProject 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s a great story, I bet the patient knows about Count Dracula, everyone knows about Count Dracula. Was the smokeless burner an easy build ? It’s a lot of hard work cleaning up after firewood production. I used to have a burn barrel going as I split n bucked but I produced too much wet waste to get a good burn and would smoke myself out of the yard.

    I was going to suggest a killswitch and/or a fuel cutoff for the excavator. Some sort of hydraulic cutoff would make it pretty near impossible for the scum to knock it off. On FB woodcutting pages there is often people saying to be on the lookout for processors and excavators etc. Cameras with IR illumination sadly show up absolutely beautifully with cellphone or other cameras. A friend has had issues with theft from sites and the scum have been shooting the cameras. He had no idea that the cameras can be seen so well with other cameras when the IR illumination is on. Ultra low light cameras are the stealthy alternative and they also are better at showing the colours of clothing and vehicles of a night.

    • @TheRuralProject
      @TheRuralProject 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      hey Alan, yep its a shame for those that get equipment stolen, I see a rex 600 was stolen a while ago, that's a huge machine and a lot of money. I know about the IR illumination, I have 2 cameras looking towards each other and when one is triggered the other sees a huge white glow. They are just a deterrent and hopefully push an opportunist thief elsewhere. I visited a building site a while ago and they had installed a fog system because the kitchen and laundry products kept getting stolen. Once you are inside and trigger the alarm the room fills with fog so thick you cannot see your hands and strobe lights flash to disorientate you. You cannot find your way out.

    A dam that dark brown suggests to me that there is lots of biological (leaf/grass/plant) matter in the dam and that's what yabbies will love. Yabbies will contribute to the dam staying dark brown as they will agitate the layer of biomass at the bottom of the dam. A flocculant will clean up the appearance of the dam but you need to minimise the amount of leaves etc that go into the dam and reducing the number of yabbies in the dam will help keep it clean. Some fish species will keep the dam cleaner by both eating the yabbies and also the leaf litter. It can't be a bottom feeding fish like carp though as they will stir things up.

    • @TheRuralProject
      @TheRuralProject 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Agree, I’d guess there is a load of plant matter in the dam. How do I reduce the number of yabbies apart from draining or netting over many weeks ? I really think I might have to drain and dig to “start with something cleaner”. Hiring a trash pump to suck the bottom clearer might work but it’d have to be a monster one and i don’t think it’s the right approach.

When it’s windy & I need to spray, I use low/minimal pressure and the biggest nozzle or open up an adjustable nozzle. As much as I love hacking away at stuff with a 2 stroke I also find that a battery powered tool is much easier to start and are much quieter. Being electric and with no drive shaft down the pole the battery one has an adjustable head angle which is handy when the hedgeclipper is in use in particular. I've also thought about 1 for many years and now my father has 1 (which I have to use as he can't) I think that it was something that I should have had a decade ago.

      You ….. with a battery saw. What’s the world coming to ? I need to ask R U OK ? I’m in shock. Ha ha. Gotta say I’ve been thinking about a Mikita saw ( as I have batteries ) … but I cannot bring myself to do it. 🪓👍🤔

      I tried to convince dad to get a Makita as he has the batteries but he wanted a standalone one. In the end the Bunnings XU1 got purchased and I've pruned a bit than you have there twice with the chainsaw and about 40m of hedges twice. $165 compared to about $750 for the Stihl is a fair bargain too I reckon. I've cut through up to about 4" diameter ornamental pear with no issues (and little noise).

      @TheRuralProject 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Alan_Hans__ yep the stihls are very expensive and reality is if you do a bit of cutting you need a few batteries and they ain’t cheap.

    My father grabbed a combination pole saw and hedge cutter so I could trim his garden back at the start of 2023. It was quite cheap and it's the absolute bees knees for trimming like what you did. When the parents were on the farm I used a sabre saw for trimming a number of times when a chainsaw wasn't justified but given the choice between chainsaw and ladder, chainsaw and sabre saw or a polesaw I'll now go with the pole saw every time now. I've done 2 annual prunings with it so far and the saw is still on it's original sharpen and it's actually fairly remarkable how much you can get cut out of a 2AH battery.

But they trim-em like that down in the low lands. God cut my hair like that back when I was in my 20's... Nice lil trick on the ole gringo. Now you have it, now you don't...
