I just finished a book today and I thought about you and your work. And then today there is a new studio Vlog. Serendipity! The book is called Cross Stitch by Jesmina Berrera. It’s not the story or the characters that I connected, but it’s thematic structure which is about embroidery and how historically it provided a means of connection, community, expression, protest, etc. for women.

I read 1984, while studying English Lit at university in 1970-72, along with many other classics such as Lord of the Flies, Brave New World, and Dickens, Austen, Smollett, and others. I have recently read a large book titled 'Out of the Night', by Jan Valtin. It is an amazing true account of his life in the dangerous social mess that was Germany during the 1920s and 1930s. Richard Julius Herman Krebs, used the non de plume of Jan Valtin, when he wrote and published this book in 1941, because he was afraid of the Nazis and the Russians tracking him down. I would be interested to hear/see your review of this book, Jennie, if you ever get a chance to read it, if in fact you can stomach such a disturbing tale the whole way through its long narrative. OUT OF THE NIGHT was a big eye-opener for me, who reads mostly nothing but history and memoir, especially WW II history, as my father's generation lived through that war and most of them took part in it as military personnel. My father was stationed at CFB Camp Borden in Ontario, and was getting ready to go and fight in 1945, at age 17, when the war ended and saved him from it. But his older brother, my uncle, did go for three years of it in Europe, in our Air Force, Like the fathers' of many of my childhood and teenage friends, they all came back after witnessing years of killing, death, and the destruction of countless priceless works of art, of historic towns, superb historic cathedrals, and cities, returned home as very changed and hardened young men. Reading this book of Valtin's helps you to much better understand how insane Germany was during the 1920s and 1930s, and how that terrible and very unstable state of affairs allowed a madman like Hitler and his criminally-minded gang to gain control of and manipulate the people of Germany. We must learn from history, so we don't allow such horrific events to repeat themselves. Valtin's book is a very well-written 'riveting read', and an excellent lesson about what NOT to allow to happen in any country, ever again. But, I'd like to hear others' opinions of this not-so-well-known book. You can buy used copies of it online via such used books sources as ABEbooks.com, for very reasonable prices, around $12.00 including shipping.

Will you do a video on the best travel books you've read? I have just finished a travel book by Colin Thubron, titled 'In Siberia', pub. 1999. It's a good cultural geography lesson and a good read, albeit somewhat dated. of course Bill Bryson and Paul Theroux are two great travel writers which pop into mind when one mentions travel writing.

    • @JennieJohnston
      @JennieJohnston หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Gregory, to be honest I don't read travel guide books. Perhaps it's a generational thing, but I tend to watch travel videos instead of reading about places. I prefer to read fiction or non-fiction about the history of a place rather than travel guides. So no videos forthcoming, but I will share a travel video of what we get up to in Hawaii.

    • @gregoryross.303

I did not mean travel guide-books, I meant memoirs about travelling to different lands. Such books are classed as travel, adventure, memoir...but they are certainly not travel guide books, which are indeed among the most boring of all books, but can be useful when visiting an unknown country. ❤

I read many of Mitchner's books in the 1970s, was right into his writing. He still has a big following. I must re-read a few of his books, as most of my reading is nonfiction, especially history. Mitchner employed a team of undergraduates to do much of his research for his books, he put a lot of work and reearch into each book. It will be interesting to see how I like his books these days, after not reading any of his books since the early and mid 1970s. Keep it up Jennie.

I am sure I would never ever want to read the biography of Barbara Streisand, ...unless it were well-written enough to hold my interest. Recently I looked at a biography book about Ronald Regan and thought OMG what a totally boring book that would be. I, however, know that it's not the story, but how its told that makes the difference, and believe me that is so true with books and writing. I read the first few pages of the Regan book and it held my interest. I read the whole book and enjoyed it. Wow. Memoir, biography, autobiography, history... it's all nonfiction and all comes under the broad category of History. I recently picked up Pierre Berton's big book titled 'Niagara ~ A History of Niagara Falls. Although I was born in Ontario and had been to the falls a few times, I looked at the book and thought, Nope, it'll be way too boring, I'm not interested in Niagara Falls and have not lived anywhere near Ontario for many decades and never will live there again. But, being a curious soul, and a huge fan of many of Pierre Berton's many Canadian history books, I thought I'd read a few pages of Niagara just to prove to myself that it would in fact be a boring book for me. Well, hummmmm...I could not put the book down. It was fascinating. I will read and savour any nonfiction provided it is well-written enough to hold my interest. It's not the story, it's how you tell it.... Keep up your reviews Jennie.

If you enjoyed The Art Thief, you would also much enjoy The Feather Thief, and The Orchid Thief, both of which are nonfiction books of modern times, about thieves obsessed with stealing very specialized items to sell to extra-wealthy collectors. Both books are eye-openers to underworlds where respectable millionaires and billionaires pay huge sums under the table for illicite items which come to them via intricate networks of shady dealers and sub-dealers.There is also a book (can't recall the title) about antiquities theft, which is a huge business especially in Greece and Italy.

This is an interesting and artistic video, seen from your artist's eyes Jennie. Vancouver is one of the world's top ten most-desirable cities in which to live. When I first moved west from my home in downtown Toronto in 1998 I stopped in Vancouver for about a month, and thought Vancouver's was a wonderfully warm climate, its people were relaxed, and the city was low-stress, compared to downtown Toronto. I wanted to be closer to wilderness so I soon moved from Vancouver over to Vancouver Island, where I have for the past 25 years lived in a rainforest community, very handy to a small city, and enjoying the whales, wolves, and other wildlife within this human rural community of 3,000, as well as thriving on the clean air and water and the low, low stress here in rural Vancouver Island. I like our west coast climate because there are many cold, rainy days during winter, when you must stay indoors and read.

I enjoy your videos Jennifer. 'Little Dorrit' by Charles Dickens is a long read, over 850 pages, but if you enjoy Dickens this is one of his best novels in my opinion. And the unusual aspect of this Dickens novel is that the main character is a woman, Dorrit. I also recommend watching the 7-disc set, available from most public libraries, of the BBC movie-adaptation of the book; it's excellent and compliments reading and understanding of the book.

I read 'Watership Down' in the early 1970s when it was first published, and recall enjoying it plenty. It was a book which went the rounds among my literary friends, as a 'must-read' new novel, all the rage, and we all eagerly delved into the book. I and some of my friends were studying English Literature at university at the time, reading the classics, and Shakespeare, and the Romantic Poets; and to read something a bit lighter, such as Watership Down, or Dune, or other sci-fi/fantasy gave us a nice break from the heaviness of the classics (most of which I enjoyed). Watership Down has become somewhat of a classic.

Good to see you're spending some significant time on nonfiction; few TH-cam reviewers do so. I'm essentially a nonfiction reader. Human history is one long fascinating story, comprising many millions of smaller stories, of how and why we humans are what we are today, and a skillful writer can take a potentially very boring slice of history and turn it into a thriller. My favourite book of all time is Pierre Berton's 'Klondike', a history of The Klondike Gold Rush. It is difficult to believe how crazy people became in 1898 as tens of thousands of them stopped their lives, all around the world, and rushed to Canada's Yukon hoping to strike it rich. " Fact is stranger than fiction." By reading and studying history, we learn from past human mistakes and can avoid making those same mistakes. Keep up your excellent and inspiring book reviews and previews.

    • @JennieJohnston

You would enjoy Emily Carr's writing, in her autobiographical books, such as HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS., which you are probably already familiar with. I was pleasantly surprised upon reading Carr, that she was such a good writer, and not only the great Canadian painter artist she was. I live on Vancouver Island, which was where Carr lived, and readers and artists here revere her work, probably much more than people do in eastern Canada.

Hi Jennie! This is a lovely vlog. Love the greenery and it looks so nice in the forest. I always love the Christmassy atmosphere at the end of the year. Sorry to hear you were feeling unwell. I hope you're having a wonderful 2024 so far!

It is great to hear from other judges about the prize itself, not just thoughts on books read for the rounds.

Birdie has been on my list for a while. Obasan sounds like one I would like to read. The Lesser Blessed has been on my TBR for a while. I didn’t realize it had been made into a film. 😊💙

I enjoyed the way you put this video together. I also like that you give you personal impression of the books you read whether or not you like them in a very fair and kind way

Thanks Dawn. I never want to put a book down as I know others may love it when I don't.

Thank you for sharing, I just stumbled on your video and am really inspired. I've been in a heart/head space trying to figure out what being a full time artist could be like for me. You capture the realness of it. I'm intrigued by your art process and hope you share more :D
