Welcome to my game room! I'm David McCord, and I share information about table-top strategy games - some famous, some rare - with histories and how-to-play them. I'll also introduce you to some new games as well. Thanks for watching, subscribing, commenting, etc. And be sure to play every day!
Turns out this is not a new idea: the game board shrinks as you play! It's "Tuknanavuhpi."
It's not Forbidden Island (Gamewright, 2010) - the island is not sinking.
But, as rows and columns are emptied, they become off limits to the players!
Tuknanavuhpi come from the Hopi indians in southwestern North America. Not much is known about its history - any mention I could find in reference works or Wiki sites is very brief. (It's all in the video.)
Regardless of the fogginess of the game's past, it remains a fun variation on the familiar jump-and-capture elimination game. Something to spring on your checkers-playing friends!
(NOTE: I've since heard the pronunciation as "TUKE-nana-VUH-pi" - My aplogies to the Hopi.)
As always, thanks for watching, and be sure to visit us elsewhere:

It's been a great privilege to work with collector and author Norman Brosterman on his latest publication: "From Shogun to Godzilla - A Graphic Gameboard History of Modern Japan." Within its pages are nearly a hundred gameboards spanning over 150 years of Sugoroku - a form of board game with roots that are centuries older. These are generally race games not too far removed from the Game of Goos...

AfrikanTahti? Who knew?
มุมมอง 63814 วันที่ผ่านมา
This is probably the most popular game I never heard of, but that might be a bit presumptuous. There may be a lot of million-sellers I never heard of. But this one's been around for over 70 years (and so have I)! The players are moving about on a map of Africa which is criss-crossed with land routes and air routes, and there are a few sea routes around the coast as well. They're looking for the...

BOO! You have that, haven't you? This is a tale of a deadly dare, as in "You don't dare run through this graveyard on the spookiest night of the year!" It's basically a card-driven race game for 2 to 4 players, but there's plenty more to it than just a flip-and-move. Each player has a set of six special modifier cards, and as you play they get used up. But when you've used all six, they magical...

Police radio created the catch phrase - Parker Brothers created the board game!

When early police radio was still a new concept, the phrase "Calling All Cars" became a well-known phrase when significant law enforcement emergencies occurred. It sounds like a pretty cool game. At a glance, the name looked pretty Finnish to my (not-Finnish) eyes.
Wonderful game! Congratulations!
Interesting mechanism.
A very interesting game. Just one question, at 4:07 should the third row (beginning from the top) be blocked since all places are free? Regards from Switzerland
No, because it's not the "outermost" row. Unless you're playing Tuknanawopi (with a "w"). That variant, especially with the diagonals, is quite different.
😁👍
Very informative! Thank you!
The nostalgia of the old games and memories of playing them with family was irreplaceable. People can play the modern alternative games but I'm old school with card and board games.
Are these games still available and if so, where can I purchase them on line?
Visit our website - the link is in the description: newventuregames.com !
Maybe the Library of Alexandria probably had those documents on those ancient board games on how it was played but was burned down. Just a theory.
I notice the peg's heads are big that may not fit 2 pegs if they are placed at its closest distance between 2 holes next to each other. I think historians had not made any ideas for this scenario. Do you think there's a rule if 2 pegs are at its closest when the original players used it in the past?
Play long and roll them. ^_^

We got ours yesterday, really interesting stuff and beautiful pictures. I was actually expecting a lot of Go and Shogi, but pleasantly surprised to find a world of gaming I was completely unaware of.
Hi, do you accept submissions for games from game designers? I would like to propopose some prototypes I am working on if possible.
Send us an email with the details.
Sometimes you wonder if anyone from the countries these games come from are still played in those places. I work remotely with a guy who is married to a Filipino woman, so I had him ask her if she had ever heard of the game, and if anyone plays it. The response I got was that she was not only the best player in her family, I was welcome to visit them at any time and she's gladly kick my a$$ in the game. So I guess that answers that question. :)
😆
New to me in The Netherlands. Gotta say that a lot of the box art looks pretty iffy... I wonder if more recent releases counter this. If this is so difficult to get, wouldn't a homemade version work fine?
It may not be difficult to get in Scandinavia - but it doesn't seem to be available at all in the U.S.A.
@@NewVentureGames I sent you a message at BoardGameGeek, let's arrange a copy for you.
Sounds a bit like "Pirate & Traveler," mixed with a tiny bit of "Monopoly."
TORILLE
It's a great family game where everyone has a chance to win.
I was born in Finland in early 70's. We have played that game hundreds of times back in the days. Owned several copies too. Now I don't have a copy, nor do I live in Finland anymore. But I've been trying to get a copy recently. This was a good reminder to get a copy on my next trip to visit my family.

This is a nice video sbout the history of the game and showcase of what the game about it

Luved the 3M Games.
Love it again with our new version!
So close to the goal, only 9 days to go, I know we'll make it!
Thanks for you support!
Two alternative setup approaches. Best for intermediate players. Include cards for both fleets with different starting options for that fleet, and both players choose their setup cards, either from all possible setups, or from a random subset. Best for advanced players. The black fleet chooses their setup in secret first (pencil and paper, whiteboard, or small pegboard), then the treasure fleet sets up on the board. Then the black fleet reveals their setup and places ships accordingly. Bonus: the pegboard could be an included travel version of the game!
Nice. Thanks! (Travel version, eh?)
la coleccion de 3m es genial, incluso en México aun se llegan a encontrar en los mercados de pulgas
So this is “Aseb” but with 4 extra spaces. Literally enter the board, follow a path with a few spaces being safe, then leave the board again at the end.
Yup. Pretty innovative for 5,000 years ago I guess. There are some speculative rules (related to vague phrases in the original rules decoded by Irving Finkel) that hint at some pieces having different powers, but the hints are not clear enough to codify.
The 3M Bookshelf Game Series is so cool. I’ve got 20 of them as well as a dozen Avalon Hill Games. Break Thru is a fun game (as most of them were).
If you were playing a series of games do you score more points if you capture the flagship rather than sink it?
I do not see that in the rules, but it sounds reasonable since it's a more difficult win.
Very nice game! I would change the spelling of the name: BreakThrough. The word "thru" is not standard. Not elegant!
It's an homage to the original edition which was called "BreakThru."
would love to play this!
😁👍
I love the story! This game sounds like a lot of strategical fun!
The guys int he Scout Troop really liked it!
well, why not thinking in reverse? They may have started from F and "moved up" to A with their 12 pawns an 2 dice (hence the name). Those who get the majority of pawns in the 12 middle fields, once all filled up, wins the game! This makes it a cross between Backgammon and Pachisi.
You didn't explain sh*t
I treasure my childhood copy of Smess! And now I have a story to share… When I was six years old my father refused to teach me chess unless I beat him at checkers. I had no interest in checkers, which I didn’t think was a very interesting game at all. So I was pretty upset! But my mother saved up some money and bought me a copy of Smess. She and I played it a lot. And when I finally did get my hands on a magnetic game of chess that included the rules (four years later), I proceeded to beat most of the other kids in my elementary school class. This included the boy next door. “You should let him win,” said my father. “NEVER THROW A GAME JUST TO SOOTHE A MAN’S EGO!” My mother exclaimed. I grew up to marry a man who loved my competitive spirit. We play boardgames ever chance we get. ❤
The Johnny Cash cosplay is on point. 😉 Sounds like a great game…just put my order in. ❤

The arithmetic used to calculate the score is a way to force the player to capture stones of the same color. Two green stones are better than one red plus one yellow. That is the purpose of the strange rule.
