My Railroad Crossing Bell Collection Part 1: The Union/ US&S Teardrop Bells
Here is part one of a series of several videos showcasing my Railroad Crossing Bell collection. I have about 20 bells total, so best if I break the collection down into parts. In this video I will be showing off all 7 of my Teardrop bells.
A little history on the Union Switch and Signal Teardrop bells:
US&S was founded in 1881 after the Union Electric Signal Company and the Interlocking Switch and Signal company merged. The first US&S crossing protection warning bell was first produced in the early 1900's, and it resembled a modern round bell, with a unique internal mechanism. Around 1908/ 1909, the teardrop bell was first produced. The design was successful and mass production began, and the US Patent getting approved on February 20th, 1917. The Teardrop bell would remain in production (with some design changes along the way) for over 60 years until US&S became WABCO (Westinghouse Air Brake Company) in 1968. Wabco continued production of complete bells and parts into the early 1970's, then finally discontinued production sometime before the 1980's to make way for new, modern bells (such as the WABCO BA-10 bell).

Here is a compilation of videos I took of the Tri-State Railway Historical Society's excursions on June 26th, 2022. That day, they ran several back and forth trips on the Whippany Line for the members of the Historical Society. The train consisted of Morristown and Erie ALCo C-424 No. 19, two cabooses owned by Tri-State, and Morristown and Erie GP7u 23. Please enjoy!

Dover and Rockaway River/ Dover and Delaware River Railroad Local Freight KV-1 Around Flanders, NJ

On 5/3/22, around 2 pm, I was working outside when I thought I heard a Train. I had the day off, so I dropped everything and got down to the Firehouse to see if there was any action, and try to catch this Semi-Rare move. After a few minutes of wait and no Train, I went over to Triumph Plastics across the Street from the Flanders Shoprite to see if they were switching Triumph. Sure enough, throu...

Recorded August 15th, 2020 On a warm day in August, after picking up a couple of antiques, we went to the Strasburg Railroad in Ronks, PA just outside of Lancaster to see the 3pm train pass by Ebenshade Road. This railroad is interesting not only because it is the longest operating railroad in America which still runs steam locomotives, but the railroad still uses vintage crossing signal equipm...

REUPLOAD VIDEO Filmed August 9th, 2019 In this video, we see the rarely caught Dover and Rockaway River Railroad/ Dover and Delaware River railroad DO-1/DO-2 job running on the former CNJ High Bridge Branch. RACO Type 2B Railroad Crossing Bell Restoration
มุมมอง 9224 ปีที่แล้ว
Here is the restoration process of my newest project: A Railroad Accessories Corporation (RACO) railroad crossing bell! These bells were only made for a short stint from the late 1950's to the early 70's. RACO's predecessor was the Griswold Signal Company until it emerged to form RACO in the late 50's (the Griswold Signal Company logo name is almost visible in the back door of the bell). In the...
Reading, Blue Mountain and Northern Freight Train at Jim Thorpe, PA
มุมมอง 8214 ปีที่แล้ว
Today, I was in Jim Thorpe, with no expectations of seeing a train, as the Lehigh Gorge Scenic railway had ceased operations in November, but to my surprise, a RBMN Local Freight snuck up on me, most likely coming from the interchange with Norfolk Southern in Lehighton, PA. Here, you'll see two powerful SD50's lead a lengthy train through a grade in the Lehigh Gorge. Sorry for the poor quality ...

One of these is in service on byerly rd in Boring, md. It’s on its own mount, it’s just the bell and crossbucks. Im %100 percent sure its this
try doing that fast, get a rapid fire bell sound
I don't even have this bell anymore lol. Way too new for my taste now.
@@northjerseyrailroadproduct2770 what did you do with it? sell it?
Nice bell collection . I am in the process of reproducing the paper instruction sheet that goes inside the door of the bell. In the video of bell 3 the 2nd gen US&S teardrop could you measure the sides of the instruction sheet and let me know the measurements ? When I finish the sheet I will send you a pdf file of it so you can print your own . There were 2 types of sheets one was square and the other was shaped like an upside down pyramid . Geepchaser
I already have a good pdf file of the papers that I photoshopped and corrected. Looks just like the original! I sell them for $10 each. I print them out on a thicker paper, and mail them.
God I wish I had been able to catch this. Great video!
2 questions: 1: how do you find when these trains are coming and 2: where does the C&D store their locos like 2006 when out of use? Do they have a dedicated shops complex like Morristown & Erie does?
Hopefully this helps... 1. They don't run on a set schedule. Usually, they work the county lines on weekdays under the symbol CJ-1/ CJ-2. I usually have good luck on Tuesdays and Fridays. I live in Flanders, so if I hear a horn and I am not doing anything important, I head down to the tracks to see what is going on. Sometimes, if I am driving on the back roads, I'll see them switching or running, and same thing, if I have nothing important going on, I'll follow them. Now, in the video, there was a passenger run for The CNJ Veterans Association and then later on the Operation Toy Train run. I found out about those on Facebook. The CNJ Veterans run was in the summer, so made for a nice day. It was actually 95°! 2. C&D is made up of a bunch of railroads. The Black River and western, the Bel-Del, DDRR, DRRV, and DRRR. They also lease locomotives. It seems as though their home base for repairs is on the Black River in Ringoes, but as for storing the locomotives used on the DRRV and the DDRR, they usually keep them at Lake Junction, the Kenvil Team Track, or anywhere on the Washington Secondary.
Oh ok, thanks! I live in Flanders too so I hear the horns but oftentimes it’s too late by then because I hear them leaving rather than arriving. Thanks for sharing their storage locations though! I’ve been wondering about that ever since C&D showed up on scene.
@thatsicilian787 I would highly recommend getting Facebook and joining some of the local railfan groups.
Nice video! I like the shot at carrol drive I think idk, But I love the shot of it with a tree branch under 5303
everybody gangster till they pause the video but the bell keeps ringing
👍🏻😷 T R A I N P O R N !! 😂🤣 I used to go for rides with my Dad on Sundays back in the 1970’s... In Whippany and the former location (no clue where... I just remember the train stopping and “Bandits” boarding. ). We also did Becker Farm miniature railroad in Roseland. And...who could forget Turtle Back Zoo’s train by the reservoir. Kinda ghetto-like nowadays, but it used to be fantastic. Thanks for the video.
That has a pretty sweet mellow sound. Too bad railroads are moving to electronic everywhere. No comparison.
And the electronics don't last 110 years like these mechanjcals do. The mechanicals were built to last, and not half-assed.
@@northjerseyrailroadproduct2770A railroad near me had to switch back to mechanical because all the e bells broke😂 thanks a lot GENERAL SHIT SIGNALS
Nice channel
What gen is it? Guessing 3rd
2nd generation. 3rd generation would say the patent date on it, this one only has the name and "Made in US"
I think that you actually have gen 3. I find these way more common
@@flattrain5834 it's a 2nd generation, I looked up the difference, mine doesn't say the patent date, nor does it only say Union on it. It's a 2nd Gen
You have this one, right? th-cam.com/video/wtZrRbdAvIs/w-d-xo.html
@@flattrain5834 yeah, it looks like that. It is a 2nd Gen
Just curious, do u have a WABCO bell? If u do, do u plan to sell it on eBay?
No, and I'll probably never want one! They are hard to restore and not very "fun" to work on...
North Jersey Railroad Productions is it cuz they r so cheaply built?
@@Ferromexfan4081 yeah, and parts are near impossible to find. Most commonly, WABCO bells sold online after retirement have a sea of problems that come with them, due to their design.
North Jersey Railroad Productions if that company just made their bells better, they wouldn’t be so rare and they wouldn’t die so often
North Jersey Railroad Productions can u shoot me a email I just got a Griswold type 2b and trying to get some parts for it but have no idea what it would be under grayterryr@gmail.com
Awesome bell! Congrats on 100 subs!
Thanks!
Nice
Lol
Nice video. Looks like NRFF to me
QAJT/JTQA
It feels bit odd to see SD50s on the RBMN that have rooftop Air conditioners.
I think these units are fairly new to the railroad, and coming from CSX, they may have more gadgets and add-ons than air conditioning systems.
I'm sure the crews will be happy
Thanks for 1,000 views!
Wow cool. Ex CSX
Thank you! I said B&O because of the colors, and its delivery name
Great footage, keep it up 👍
Great video glad I met you!
Yes, you aswell!
First view
Sehr schön
You can run those WRRS/ WCH bells on a HO model RR transformer, if you have an questions about the electrical part I could probably tell you
I know, I just was being a bit lazy here, instead of pulling out my car battery, or my lionel transformer
Hello my name is Michael and I’m new to your channel. I’m guessing you railfan in Nj
Awesome Video! Hey you got me in there. nice :D
is that winchester western?
This is The dover and rockaway river railroad, yet the locomotive on the rear is ex Winchester and western 732!
North Jersey Railroad Productions REALLY IT WAS CAB 732 OMG IMA FREAK OUT ITS LIVING LIFE IN NORTH JERSEY AND BTW I LOVE WINCHESTER AND WESTERN Railroad
Are they going out of Business?
No, this was just the final run of the 2018 polar express. I knew someone would ask me that!
Nice video! It was nice talking to you in Flanders. I subbed.
You as well. Check out my other stuff and subscribe, I'll subscribe to you
Great video Collin, it was nice meeting you today as well.
Thanks Adam
How’d you get to ride it?
I didn't
EPIC video brotha!!! Watch my tribute to 811 and 732 on my channel!!
Great! I've shot the 488 along the Hudson back in the eighties and nineties countless times and never once got a look inside, thanks.
1990s Railfan hey thanks, and your welcome for the shot. The engine might not be the same because they did alot to keep it up to good order.
Awesome! I was going to check it out next Sunday, but plans came along.
Fantasti video North Jersey Railfan lucky for that ride, yes I will say overall very friendly staff of the M&E railroad.. Really a shame what has happened to the company itself though the loss of Bayway and those other lines in Western Morris County. BTW that is me at 1:30 on the right side after the switch and me again at 22:00
I know, a shame that sich nice people are working on a railroad that is struggling. I heard alot of their locomotives are being stored. The engineer said they put GP7u 23 in storage along Jefferson Rd. By the transload facility.
yup it is..
Have you any pictures of 23 in storage
No I don't have photos of 23 in storage
Nice dude
Look Out For The Train Thanks!
Look Out For The Train Gibson gas was lost months ago when they lost the county lines!
Nice
NJ Railroad Video Productions Thanks, I think I saw you on the train
North Jersey Railfan yep I saw you too
Awesome!
SPCridge2012 thanks! Were you out there filming
Unfortunately no! I was really busy today!
Oh well, its running tomorrow and next saturday
Great video! I don't like trains very much but this was very good. Never seen a train here great shots.
hey i think i saw you at 6:29 i was up in the loco with the Santa hat :)
bossman123 yes you did. You got authorization bu the engineer. Everyone I met was jealous!
Lol I was not planning to ride up their in the 1st place but the engineer was like come on kid lol 😂😂
I also might take the m,nj one next year :)
The MNJ is far out there. Too far for me to chase
