    Reading music and playing by ear are both important parts of the skill set that makes a quality musician. Can you imagine trying to learn a language without ever seeing it written? Or without ever hearing it spoken? Rote teaching can be great, but it's terrifying to think that a piece you spent months learning can disappear forever if you don't practice it regularly. The human memory can only store so many pieces, and if everything you learn is by rote, eventually all the pieces you worked so hard to learn will be replaced or forgotten. If you can read, even at a rudimentary level, the pieces will never be lost. By teaching students to read, you are teaching them to be self-sufficient and they will ultimately have something to show for that years later. Their memory of piano lessons will be that they learned a set of real tangible skills that allow them to be successful in their goals, not that they learned a bunch of rote pieces they can't remember anymore. If you're reading this right now, that is because at some point--probably long ago--you learned the skill of reading, which is a skill that doesn't go away. But do you remember what you had for lunch two weeks ago on Tuesday? Probably not. That is my point. Rote teaching is a great "early access" tool that can help prepare students for more difficult pieces, but I don't think it should ever be the only way a student is taught.

    • @PlayCreatively
      @PlayCreatively หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with you. Students should learn both. Do you believe that rote teaching and ear training are the same?

    • @aenema22
      @aenema22 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PlayCreatively No, I understand the difference. But I contend that there is a pipeline between rote teaching and what is commonly known as "playing by ear". Being able to do something before you understand it is an incredible thing. Like being able to quote Shakespeare while being illiterate. I'm happy to show my students certain things above their reading level in order to prepare them. But I'm comfortable saying no if they request something way out of their current ability that will only hurt their progress.

  • @aenema22
    @aenema22 หลายเดือนก่อน

    On the topic of teaching students music they want to learn, I agree but with some strong caveats. If they keep bringing in viral Tiktok meme songs week after week, I will say no. If they request a difficult piece far above their level and there is no suitable arrangement, I will say no. No Fur Elise until they can use their 5th finger and count. Some of this may sound harsh but it's not without reason. My aversion to TikTok songs is hopefully understandable to all teachers. I have a high tolerance for all styles of music, but teaching TikTok songs is a complete waste of my time and the student's. It will never result in anything meaningful, they will not remember it or be interested the next week, and in my opinion it is harmful to the student and will only hinder their progress. Teaching them to just bang randomly on the keys would be more helpful. Teaching a student to hack the first few bars of a difficult piece before they're ready technically will often result in the student playing poorly, practicing bad habits, hitting a wall, and coming to the conclusion they lack the talent to do what they want. This is horrible for the self esteem of the student. Piano is a serious discipline and there are no shortcuts. It's great to have high ambitions and I strive to help my students reach them. If they want to play a piece high above their level I try to channel that ambition into mastering the technique required to play at that level.

    The chords youre playing sound cool but I wish you went more into how or why you chose some of the passing chords. Otherwise its more of a "look what I can do" rather then "here's what you can do to spice up any song". I think the only top you gave was to try adding a 7 to some chords

    Is it possible to play a hard level classical or jazz piece from score in play them in all 12 keys or is it to much? There are people the study years at one piece to get play them in al 12 keys onley to impress people isn 't doing your time at these practise misions... ? If a good piano player reading music from score the have firtst practice it wil cost many time why he shoud play them in all 12 keys?

    So true. Took a group class and this teacher actually wants to hold students back because she can keep them coming back. Well, I’m out. Two months and nobody plays a thing. Clapping for months. Last week she told the class that using the left hand takes forever so she’s not gonna get into that. Just ridiculous. There’s literally no music in this music class.

    • @aenema22
      @aenema22 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Group music classes are generally not a good idea if it can be avoided. Speaking from experience, in most cases group classes will ultimately cater to the lowest common denominator. Slower students will feel singled out and embarrassed and quicker learners will feel bored and neglected. Splitting the class into two groups is a good option, or designating a few advanced students to help work with the slower learners. I've seen this work effectively, but ultimately I feel one-on-one is the way to go.
