Mainstone Carving
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 ส.ค. 2017
I'm Tom, a trained banker mason and stone carver, showing the work I make so that people can have a better understanding about how the ancient trade of stonemasonry is done in the 21st century. Hopefully you can join me on my journey to make some cool stuff from the unforgiving material that is natural stone.

This was beautiful to watch!
Wish you had more of this carving stuff... you can do a lot more than stonemasonry only
very good.
Its a beautiful thing.
Beautiful work...!!!...Thanks for sharing this...
Great to see the variety of work that Banker stonemasons encounter. This short video illustrates a number of designs for headstones and memorials. The use of hand tools in conjunction with grinders and air chisels was good to see, especially how each was utilised to form rustic, chamfered and stopped edges. The close up shots are extremely helpful. As always the standard of workmanship Tom is superb. Looking forward to any future posts - most grateful to you for taking the time to promote this wonderful craft!
Lovely stuff
You make it look so easy mate. Always enjoy your videos and get the urge to get back into being creative. 30+ years as a Mason and would be carver 👍 🏴
Loveleh .
Beautiful work.
Just think - a real life Ancient Alien living and working in Yorkshire. What a world!
I thought it was only me who made up curves 😂 this makes me happy. Your vids have been really handy for me over the last few weeks. Appreciate it 😎
Absolutely beautiful and well crafted. Well done!
Looking forward to the freehand owl 🙂 Loving the vids
Couldn't agree more on the styrofoam packaging. Some people hand me their scraps of foam plastic, which works great if it's not too heavy, and it doesn't break and crumble all over, but it's not really suited for everything and it's still plastic and expensive. In Germany twisted wood fibres are used a lot, but that really is not a substitute for eps either because it's not flat. Wood fibre boards are not great either cause those get soggy in the rain and can stain the stone..... what else?
I use carpet a lot. It gets heavy and impractical though so I always keep styrofoam as well.
Actually you know what’s pretty decent is the expansion joint foam. Stays together. I’ve got a 40mm thick piece of foam I’ve cut up it’s absolutely amazing.
Get better soon!
If you ever need to replace the brush on an angle grinder always look for the power source. If it’s powered by compressed air then remove the tube. If it’s powered by a battery then take the battery out. If it’s powered by electricity then unplug it. 2:46
Insane that’s amazing
Nice work!
Nice and informative stuffs mate, shoutout from Danish banker 💪😁 We do very much the same here. We also use the electro plated ones for cutting marble and "crisp" stone
Awesome!!! Ooooo crisp stone sounds tasty.🤤
@@mainstonecarvingtbh mate, it was terrible 😂 think it was called "belch noir" sold as marble, act like flint stone or glass 💀 high rotation, 0 wobble electro plated and it would still splinter some corners
Good stuff!
Great informative video. Thanks
A concise and very informative description of the types of blades used in angle grinders for stone cutting, focussing mainly on sandstone and limestone applications. Clear explanations were given throughout regarding appropriate blades and sizes for different materials and their relative hardness. Another extremely helpful video - most grateful for you Tom for continuing to post such content!!
That was very useful. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Good 👍 wood 😊💯
Thanks 👍
Thank u so Mach 😊😊😊😊😊
Wonderful!
Thanks mate, great video 👍
No problem 👍
Yeah, I found mostly the same things. Love the idea of swapping out the electro plated ones, got loads of old ones. But the mounted blades are quite expensive here and difficult to find, except with specialized traders and then the proces are outrageous. So I just bought a set of these mounts and put on much cheaper blades myself. Found a site that sells really cheap blades, where I buy the blades for abrasive materials that I use for the soft sandstone, plus the blades for hard concrete that cut through granite like butter. The binding is quite soft so they don't last as long as the expensive blades but I get four cheap ones for the price of one expensive one, however the time I can cut with those four is twice that of an expensive one. And still cutting much faster. And polishing, yes, doing black granite at the moment, you won't believe all the tools I bought for nasty corners. Favourite is the multitool machine though, with a finger sanding pad and a spraygun with water
Thank you for taking the time to make these vids. They are so helpful to me and I’m sure others. I’m a letter carver and I’m trying to expand into banker work. These vids are brilliant!
You are so welcome! I’m glad they are useful.
It all makes sense. Great video as usual.
Glad to hear it! Thanks 🙏
keep going, you're doing a lot for our profession!
Thanks. I really appreciate that.
Are u independent freelancer do services for ppl for mondy ,or just working for someone or company for a sakary
More great work. The explanations are a great insight into the setting of rebates and trammeling of them to overcome the length of the trammel you have. Just one question on your dry setting out of the finished arch... will the voussoirs have that size of joint? They looked about 10mm in the video. I would have built them with 3 to 5mm joints. Or did you just keep the stones further apart to avoid any chipping on the pallet? Keep up the good work and videos
Thanks, Im glad it was helpful. I think the joints when I layed it out were around 5 to 6 mm. I didn't spend the time to measure them out exactly but they are specked to be 5mm joints when its built.
Cleeeean! Good on you for showing the damage to arris and how to blend it in, I feel a lot less inadequate now😊
Superb Stonemasonry content detailing the marking out and making of a complex arch voussoir component The This 2nd Part highlights the importance of extremely accurate making out on curved sections using the box trammel and a systematic approach to removing checks. The purpose made mini - trammel was great and emphasised the necessity to make specific tools for simple applications or needs. Other great tips given and demonstrated ( regarding grinding wheel cutting direction near delicate moulding regions) and also guidance on overcoming occasional mistakes. The completed component along with its arch counterparts are finished to perfection - absolutely first class craftsmanship and a pleasure to watch, learn and be inspired by. So grateful Tom !!!
Class work, great channel but I'm worried for giving away our secrets :)
Rising tide lifts all ships 😉 we need to keep up against the cnc’s
Good of you showing that tiny human character in the carving, i.e. you repairing the pinged-off corner. So recognizable and shows your attention to crispness and detail
Beautiful work mate! Any chance you could give us a run down on the main types of grinder wheels you use? It looks like you’ve got quite the collection. Cheers.
I’ll do a brief video explaining blades. I’ve had a few people ask me for this so I’ll get something out asap 👍
Good man, thank you 👍
Very sharp mate
Great job! I also work with stone and, despite my extensive experience, I would hardly be able to make such complex geometry by hand with the same ease and efficiency. Although maybe I'm just spoiled by my CNC. Very impressive work! Bravo!
Thank you very much!
beautiful work again!
Thank you! Cheers!
Not to be a d1ck but... 1:00 referring to marks and a straight edge, All the box trammel does is offset whatever you give it. Regardless, good video; new subscriber. You make beautiful things. 👍
Bravo!!
wonderful work using gorgeous stone!!!! 😊😊😊
14:40 aliens on another planet with a big telescope - omg hes soooooo slowwwwww!!! 😊😊😊 i really like your wet finishing techniques - i do similar carving old sandstone!!
nice work!! - all my stuff is tiny by comparison!!😊😊😊
Beautiful.
Thank you!
