Three Kings of Blues
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 มิ.ย. 2022
I transcribe B.B King, Albert King and Freddie King. Classic Blues vocabulary, phrasing and licks.
The very first "Guitar Hero"...(Tab)
It is said that Lonnie Johnson inspired many of the early guitar legends such as Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, T-Bone Walker and even Robert Johnson - who liked him so much he allegedly even claimed to be related to Lonnie...
He was known for his sophisticated jazz-blues sound, which was a little too polished for blues but too gritty for jazz to bring about any major commercial success of his day. Despite this, Lonnie pioneered and popularised many of the things we associate with guitar nowadays, such as guitar solos, single note lines, and even using a pick.
"There's only been a few guys that if I could play just like them I would. T-Bone Walker was one, Lonnie Johnson was another" - B.B. King
I think it's fair to say the guitar world we know today would not be the same without Lonnie Johnson. He is our guitar heroes' guitar hero.
The footage is from the 1963 American Folk Blues Festival. Lonnie is performing his song "Another Night To Cry". When I first watched this I fell in love with this playing style and the way he incorporates chords with lead parts. There are no fancy amps or pedals, even the guitar itself seems almost primitive by today's standards - but the playing and musicality is just outstanding.
Enjoy the transcription and I hope you find Lonnie's playing as fascinating as I do :)

This footage is taken from Freddie King's live performance on "The!!!! Beat" in 1966. Much of the '70s blues rock guitar vocabulary of players like Clapton, Beck, Page, Young and Green had been influenced by Freddie King. Squealing vibrato bends, fast sequenced licks and cascading runs all became regular tools of the trade when they were passed down to the next generation of players armed with ...

This footage is from B.B.'s performance at the medicine ball caravan festival in 1970. During this era, B.B.s playing was significantly more complex than his late sound many associate him with. This often included fast Jazz style lines to outline chord changes influenced by his early heroes Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt. The thing that makes this solo stand out to me is how incredibly ...

A brilliant clip of Albert King performing "Blues Power" in New York in 1970. Albert seems to start the solo in A rather than Ab (even the legends got it wrong sometimes!). He recovers smoothly and delivers a fantastic guitar solo packed full of his signature licks and crazy microtonal bends we all love. The drop in dynamics in the second half is also worth noting - as Albert rolls off the volu...

Miss you B.B.
❤❤❤❤❤
I can hear that Willie Nelson must’ve heard a bunch of Lonnie in his playing
Amazing
Awesome!
3 cords at the end were beautiful
What a powerful singer and player of Blues Guitar.
Freddy was my favorite of the trio of Kings. BB was great and most famous, Albert also mighty fine.
I never knew a left handed guitar player that couldn't play.
I think the bass player has bright future in music ! Hopefully no one from England “borrows” from him & claims that it’s their original work !
They play with their feelings, Then it became a style not a bunch of thieves and copycats. Just a style.
What really suprised me when i first saw this is that B.B. knew all of the notes on the fretboard and theory. I mean his playing wasn’t just random maj and minor pentatonic, he really knew his stuff very well and you can see that all these T-bone runs and complex Charlie Christians stuff is a result of a hard work and great ear. Its just amazing
OMG 😮😢SO GOOD
BB stole a TON of those licks. good stuff
B.B. ain't no country blues man... that's what he is sayin.... IMHO.
Yessuh
Smooth asf
What’s the name of this song?
Another night to cry
Really reminds me of T-Bone Walker, im not sure who came first but they defenetly influenced each other
Yeah I said the samething, I was jamming with a guy at guitar center and he showed Lonnie Johnson. So it’s very funny how he posted this today
Do a piece on Skip James!
His guitar is awesome! His playing even more so.
True legend, this man feels the blues… another night to cry indeed!
Wow, thanks❤
Raking?
Yes I am listing to the gret A.K.
If you cant hear the music inside of ya, dont bother
WOW MAN WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eddie Lang with Lonnie Johnson... check that out!! I used to have the cassette. I'll have to look for it again.
Thanks for the suggestion 🙏
@ThreeKingsOfBlues No problem... it's genuinely amazing guitar playing and I think recorded in 1927. I would listen and realize ,when I was in my twenties, that these guys recorded way before everybody and didn't have those sounds in their heads like we do..say the Beatles or Led Zep or Clapton etc..they were before T-Bone and B.B. It's not blues per se certainly not like Robert Johnson....anyway. I learned from Lonnie here to pick the D string for the V resolution... always go to D on A string..those "little" things can be huge actually. Love the transcrips on all.. have I mentioned Sidetracked by Freddie... a bit of that if you haven't. .
Voice as smooth as silk
Thank you, awesome quality and song choice!
Thanks 🙏
🎶All hail to the king of blues. 🎶 You will be missed but never forgotten 💙🎸

Awesome !
Awesome....
OMG that left hand
Get me more FRIED CHICKEN
Blues for rich white guys lol Chords and scales? Seriously??? Robert and Muddy and Blind Willie Johnson never learned that crap.
No bra's. Great stuff
Thanks you so much!!!
What happens here is that, he forgets he had horns on tonight and kicked it off in his usual A but then he gets reminded at around 0:22 and immediately realizes he has to transpose it to G# to save this performance, then decides to finish the round first then do this break and interlude and save the day.
