E58: It Was Never A Phase - Why Do Elder Emos Love Lifting Weights? - Cultivate Podcast
I sit down with my friend James, an online and in-person coach. We explore how our love for emo music and weightlifting intertwined and shaped our lives. We dive into the challenges of feeling like outsiders in both music and sports during our school days and how lifting weights became a tool for emotional regulation and confidence-building. Our conversation uncovers the surprising parallels between expressing angst through emo music and finding solace in the gym. Whether you're reminiscing about your teenage emo phase or looking for motivation to hit the weights, this episode is a heartfelt chat that underscores the enduring impact of the emo culture on our fitness journeys. Enjoy!

TYSM Lucinda for these practical tips I am FTM trying to start getting in the gym habit soon :)
hell yeah, so glad it was helpful! Best of luck mate! I have a workout app called superhuman if you need any beginner workouts :)
You did amazing researches about the film. I learnt a lot of things. Very interesting video. Thx !
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
REAL im so scared to do legs bc my already thick legs could get bigger 😭 glad most of us have the same experience
It's 100% worth training legs, I promise! You don't need to try and grow them, but keeping them strong and mobile is super important for long term health. Also contributes towards building a killer X Frame especially if you're trans masc :)
You are making amazing video content. I just watched the video and your video quality is appreciable. I am so impressed by your content, I was analyzing your channel and noticed that You are struggling with video views and ranking. May I share some tips for achieving your goals?
I saw your video. Your video content quality is very good and attractive. But i notice that your subscriber and watch time is very low. I find some problem of your video. I believe if you solve this problem, Your subscriber and watch time increasing day by day.
amazing!!! i jus have one question because i jus spoke to my mom abt gettin testosterone…she’s with wat ever i am type of parent so she supports me in everything i do !!!! including pride im jus skeptical abt the permanent changes abt T, the thing w me is i wud love to appear more masculine 💯💪🏼 i jus have no clue of pros n cons and i dnt have anyone tht can relate or give me tipsss and jus let me know what i can look out for or uknow things of this nature !!! and im goin to b keepin my lady parts … and heard things like it doesn’t get moist down there once on t 🤔🤔🤔 can’t u tell us the permanent changes and things that one be permanent???!!!
I will definitely do a podcast on this in the future mate! Really glad you've got a supportive family! In the time being, definitely check out the gender care website!
this is so underrated… thank u!!!
You're very welcome :)
I'm thinking on doing low T I swell, I'm non-binary, I'm afraid it'll make me look too masc tho, I don't want to be perceived as male, I want people to wonder if I'm male or female
Yeah totally valid concerns, I generally pass either way and as many folk don't naturally see 'gender non conforming' I find I get gendered either way just depending on what I'm wearing or what the person themselves perceives to be more masc or femme about a person. We defo can't win on the being perceived game, but as long as we feel good and comfortable in our own body, that is honestly the only thing that matters. People may perceive us, but it's not worth your energy mate, pay them no mind and you do you <3
I was a bit sacred at starting to go to the gym, but I got a friend to drag me there and I am actually doing pretty fine with my hoddies and cute water bottle :)
hell yeah, I'm glad you got yourself there. How is your training going so far?!
@@fuzzcultureclub pretty good i gess- im getting there
What about for rhomboids, lower traps etc...Just pull higher? Thanks
@@classic1984 it’s an exercise to bias the lats in the short position specifically, if you wanted to target other muscles then you can do a different row
Yep yep thanks for the tips 💪🏼🙏🏻
No problem!!
Yeah, I know what you mean....I have a shitzu too!
haha right?! Aubrey is 1/4 pooddle 3/4 shitzu and I swear that just adds to the sassiness of it all 🙈
❤🏳️🌈❤️🏳️🌈❤️ Thank you for giving me things to think about. No one has ever said to start out with a realistic goal.
You are so welcome! :)
You are very sweet and mske exercise more approachable.
that's very kind thank you!
So trans women scored worse in multiple fitness tests than both cis women and cis men? And this is _good_ news for trans women?
Yes, because people hop on the bandwagon of “they have an advantage” to try and band them from sports when it’s purely just out of spite / hatred as opposed to actual evidence backed research. So more research = more proof people are politically driven by hate for trans women and not because there’s actually any evidence for it
Katy's wife sent me here from IG😄Great breakdown and research!
Ahh this is so awesome! Thank you :)
this is a great video how does this not have more views??
TH-cam defo isn’t the most trans friendly place haha 😛
@@fuzzcultureclub of course, it's because youtube is transphobic 🙄🤦🏼♂️
Bruh, just keep your damn gender instead of mutilating yourself
what's it got to do with you mate?
Omg! Im so happy for you!! <33
thank you!
non-native english speaker here, I'm curious as to what accent this it. as far as I know it could be liverpool or irish lol
Shona is Scottish and I’m from Yorkshire!
do you feel any difference?
yeah a pretty huge difference in energy levels, strength and just general emotions I so far!
oh yay! happy for you to be on this journey 🤍
Thanks so much, me too!
Gay ahh
correct
awesome ❤
Thanks 🤗
What does it do?
It's a form of HRT that contributes to more masculinising effects. www.genderconfirmation.com/non-binary-microdosing-testosterone/
Giving such gender envy holy crap
ahh that's very kind of you to say!
@@fuzzcultureclub it’s true though, the hair, the voice, the shirt-
You will find your euphoria also whatever that looks like for you mate!
how will they carry their rugby/softball team to victory without hitting legs tho??
Very valid point!
You seem much happier :))
Thank you!
Tf does any of this mean
think you're on the wrong side of TH-cam pal :P
What is a masc
"masc (plural mascs) (LGBT) A person whose gender (identity) is masculine (but who is not necessarily a man)."
@@fuzzcultureclub this is separate from sexuality? So, you could have a masc lesbian, masc gay, or masc straight person (and more)?
yeah 100% anyone might identify as masc if that's their vibe!
@@fuzzcultureclub what is the opposite of Masc and what about nonbinary people? Just curious, I haven't given much thought to these subjects before.
Femme. And non binary people can be masc, femme or androgynous, just like trans and cis folk can be femme, masc or androgynous. It's a spectrum for everyone, not just trans and non binary folk :)
Mental health☕️
I've literally never heard of this but this seems so true now that I think about it
yeah the internal clock regulation is something a lot of folks with ADHD tend to struggle with! Not everyone, but many.
What test is there for me to take to see if im adhd.. because I've always, as long as i can remember.. thinking I was crazy.. and my mind is so scrambled sometimes..
Yeah you can get a referral from your health care provider!
Now I'm feeling called out. I'm packing for a trip that I need to leave for in a couple hours. Laundry washing. Finding bags. I should have done it earlier but I didn't. Getting my ADHD child to sleep through the night has been a challenge his entire life.
We all do it mate! And it is so much harder when you have kids! Give yourself some grace, you got this! Small steps 💪🏻
Watching this at 3am
3:08 lol
haha the irony! I hope it was helpful though!
@@fuzzcultureclub really helpful indeed, super well structured. Really appreciate it!
@@Fran-rv1wv I’m so glad! Part 2 coming tomorrow ☺️
@@fuzzcultureclub Great! Looking forward to it! Being able to deeply understend my ADD and other disorders made my life experience way easier (at least for now haha), it has given me a sense of control over my day to day decisions, something that I hadn't really felt before the diagnosis and the medication treatment. I really think learning about neuroscience and psychology is a game changer if you struggle with things of this sort. Thanks to videos and materials like this one (mainly Huberman's Pod, Russell Barkley, Thomas E. Brown, and various youtubers) I was able to break down my innatentive behaviours and realise they had been presenting in a pattern-like way since I was a teen, after that I insisted for a proper diagnosis, something that where I live is really difficult to get, since ADHD isn't tought with up to date data in university. So thank you so much!!
Good job
thanks!
Loving these podcasts. Just so you know your audio dips in and out slightly in places which I find a bit unsettling, is there something you can do? I really like the topics you cover, it's like you know my brain !🎉
Hey so glad you enjoy the podcasts, I'm afraid with a budget of Zero the audio is what it is, but I always include a transcript with every episode and captions if needed mate :)
Ok, but what does lgbt have to do with this?
purely just a way for me to use keywords to target the people I coach
What about this makes it "inclusive fitness"? It's just a fitness tip😅🤣 fitness is fitness🤣
purely just a way for me to use Keywords to target the people I coach, it's not that deep mate.
You're getting closer and closer to looking like bbno$
totally not against it
Yesss I feel this so much the gym is such a blessing to us that struggle mentally
Yes absolutely! I've just recorded a podcast on Training with Depression which is coming out tomorrow :)
Hi familyyyy
Hey!!
Admittedly fear of baldness is a factor for why I've been hesitant about starting T.
there are lots of options for preventing it if you're worried!
Thanks for this 😌 as a genderfluid person I'm not planning to seek any medical or surgical treatment to transition, but that means that days I do feel dysphoric are much harder. I think having radical acceptance for my body as it is can be helpful, especially on days I can't bind for example.
yes 100% I would recommend a book called Queer Body Power by Essie Dennis for this, it's awesome!
Why does it have to be trans and I disagree. As a bi person I have to say pullups build those hot forearms that all genders need to seduce me and some pushup build a good back. But don't restric yourself. Do them all and become a Greek god.
No one is saying it does. But plenty of people feel like they have to be able to master these movements to be 'fit' but fitness has many different ways of being demonstrated, and these are not the only ones. Great compound movements yes, but not necessarily everyone's flavour, and there is always a scaling or alternate option if needed.
Shit dude you sound good
Thanks!
i really enjoyed this podcast, so many interesting ideas here i'm hearing for the first time. thanks for making this
I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Hope you enjoy the rest of the episodes!
Wth does trans masc even mean?
A masculine trans person that doesn't necessarily identify as male
Whats the different between a trans program and a "regular" program
The people I make content for and serve are trans masculine, so my program and content is built and tailored for people that are like me. In particular the volume of upper body in this program would be a little more so than a standard split that hits all muscles groups X times a week. Etc. But also I use these terms so my people can easily find my online, just like others may use other words to describe the people they are serving.
congrats on starting T!! I hope you observe some changes other than The Hunger soon!!
Thanks so much!
