The dragon bow is notoriously hard to craft. It requires large amounts of every mineral, topped off with lots of string, all types of feathers, and a kraken! It is hard to have enough inventory space for all the ingredients, so players usually take multiple trips to the forest and winter, and the whole process can take upwards of 20 days. However, with extremely delicate inventory management, it is possible to make just one trip to the forest and winter and get a dragon bow in 9 days!
I actually did the dragon bow in 10 and a half days 2 years ago, but I didn't upload the video. The time loss was largely because I used a winter scarf instead of a turban, which made winter easier, but I had to deal with sandstorms in the desert. In my attempts for this video, I got another 10.5-days run; this time, I lost time because the high score makers had blocked the large emerald ore, so I figured I could do better.
As with the super hammer and super diving mask, it is impossible to give a consistent amount of time for this speedrun. The problem is that resources regenerate faster if there are more players on the server. Similarly, time is lost if a lot of players are mining resources that I am trying to mine. So, this kind of speedrun is fastest if there are a lot of players, but most of them are in the forest (this is why people used to bot servers, but don't bot servers because it annoys most players).
I gave some commentary about how I managed my inventory, but here is a more complete list of "choke points":
- In winter, when I still have my sword and machete, I don't have enough space for gold or ice, so I must farm these resources later.
- When I start crafting bows, I have no room for fire or cooked food, so I need to place a fire and fill up first. Once I have the gold bow, I no longer need a slot for gold, but I immediately need a slot for 10 blue string to make the diamond bow.
- When I kill the piranha, I only have 1 slot open, but I need 2 to get the scales, so I need to recycle my spear. Actually, if you look closely, I hadn't yet thrown away my extra hawk feathers, so I needed to do that too.
- When I reach the reidite, I can't immediately mine reidite until I have placed my bridges.
- When I craft the remaining blue string, I have no inventory space for cooked food, so I need to fill up first. But I wanted to craft the blue string right then because I would only need 1 slot for blue string, instead of 2 for diamond and regular string.
- When I killed the vultures, I did not have room for both a machete and feathers. When the first vulture died, I equipped one of my extra bandages and threw away the rest. Then, I had to recycle my machete to make a fire and cook food, but I would immediately need my machete for the other 2 vultures!
- I needed penguin feathers for an amethyst bow, which costs an inventory slot. I could not use this slot for emeralds until I had crafted my amethyst bow.
- When crafting my amethyst arrows, I did not have space for cooked food, so I needed to fill up. However, once this was done, I only needed 1 slot for arrows, instead of 2 for amethyst and vulture feathers.
- I wanted to craft roofs and bridges to make mining emeralds easier, but I only had enough inventory space for 1 of these at a time, so I needed to make 2 trips to the oasis where my workbench was.
Some of you might wonder why I wore my turban in the lava biome. A little-known fact is that a turban cools you slightly in the lava biome: every 5 seconds, your heat increases by 20 instead of 25. However, since I was using the "ice every 5 seconds" trick, it doesn't actually make much difference.
It is easy to see that lots of reidite spikes had been placed, and if you look at the leaderboard, you will see that someone is doing a big high score, so you might wonder how I didn't get savaged. In fact, I failed lots of attempts for this very reason. At first, I thought I was just lucky, but then I noticed that high-scoring players were dying, until the main high score maker themself was gone; they were probably getting raided while I was in the desert, so they were preoccupied and didn't notice me.
