Using XY mode on a Tektronix 453 Oscilloscope

It took me a bit to figure out how to use XY mode on my 453 oscilloscope. Hopefully this video will be helpful for folks trying to figure this out. It certainly will be helpful to me when I forget how to do this. The Tektronix 453 was introduced in 1965 and produced through 1974. This one was a find. It was in great shape and really only required a lot of contact cleaning to restore. More info ...

The Dirty Side of TRS-80 Collecting & Restoring

What looked to me like a single Model 1 in the (badly photographed) ad was a whole collection including two complete TRS-80 Model 1s, expansion interfaces, floppy disks, and monitors. Plus a huge set of books and floppy disks. I show my initial cleanup with the vacuum and a damp towel.
Let's Play Haunted House on a TRS-80 Model 1

I play through the Haunted House adventure game on a TRS-80 Model 1 computer. This is a very early text-based adventure game that ran on the original 4K (Level 1 Basic) TRS-80. The version I play through is the 16K "improved" version we created in the previous video. It avoids the annoying cassette tape loads when you die in the game and when you go to the second floor. Tim - are you including the TP-10 and serial cable as well, or was that just to test and make sure the serial port is working? (I will mention it on this weekend's Coco Nation Show, to give people in the area another bit of incentive to attend Tandy Assembly. 🙂)

    Videos like yours inspired me to dig up my old coco 3 and go through this process. Unfortunately, I ventured into my parents' attic and could not find it. I'm going to have to wait until summer is over to inspect every corner of the attic to confirm it really is MIA. (It's too damn hot.) I'm not sure if finding it will be a blessing or a curse. 😀

    The Albuquerque public schools had a PDP-11 and Dec System 10 computers and a single VT-100 terminal that students could use along with a lot of TTYs. DEC was making the terminals in Albuquerque at the time so I suspect that is why the school had the DEC equipment. I have a stick of 8080's that a schoolmate gave me back then that I'm sure came from DEC meant to be in at VT-100.

    Completely the same story! Fitchburg High School (massachusetts), late 80's we had the PDP11 in the computer room. The poor math teacher taught some basic classes and this terminal is where I started my programming life. My senior year, they threw out the PDP11 and all the terminals. The math teacher kept one VT100 and gave it to me when I graduated because I was his best student. I went on to bring that terminal to college at Lowell where the VT100 was connected through the modem to the computer science lab and I was in an exclusive club of one; students who could program on the college servers from his dorm room. Got me a leg up for sure. To think 25 years later I'm a chief architect at Dell and this is how it all started for me. Thanks for making the video because it had me saying "no way...." several times. If I ever came across a VT100, I would definitely scoop it up and have it in the background of my zoom office.

    Hello! If you don't mind, I have a question. I have successfully converted a Model III keyboard to USB using an arduino, however, the Model I's keyboard eludes me. Both keyboards have 20 pin connectors (off top of my head) but the Model I seems to handle the input very differently. Would you happen to have any insight about the Model I keyboard circuitry you would care to share? FYI: All mods I've done are non-destructive so the machines can be restored to original condition.

    Part of the reason that more power is drawn when the cassette is in use is the CoCo driving the cassette motor control relay. If you disconnect that, you can probably reduce the power requirement a bit.

  • @david-sv3kg
    @david-sv3kg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you may want to bypass the built-in 5v regulator and supply the other voltages directly (e.g. use the regulated 5v from the USB and then create a more efficient +/- regulated rails from that... Probably an isolated brick)

    • @hallorant
      @hallorant 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, yes in the video's configuration Q1 still gets roughly as hot as it does with the normal power supply. The simple USB setup I showed in the last video kept the case very cool. I think your idea is a good one, but getting the whole computer to work (this video) is the first step. More experiments to come. I melted some resistors yesterday :-) but the CoCo 2 is fine!

  • @david-sv3kg
    @david-sv3kg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What current/voltage? I would expect around 500-750mA. But the cocsdc + two joysticks may get close to an amp?

    • @hallorant
      @hallorant 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Current measured into the computer from the USB was about 900mA with SDC. USB is 5V -- most power strips can go about 2A.

      @@hallorant , thanks for the data! I usually put my scope on USB power devices and load test before I let them plug into anything I care about. Looks like anything that can do 1a continuous/clean should work fine.

    @david-sv3kg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should be possible to put ftdi USB chip on board and bypass the whole +/-12v rs232 stuff to get the bit banger going (at 5v). But it would probably need to run on a powered hub for that

  • @star2gmail
    @star2gmail 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The serial will not work as it requires +-12V (well, closer to +-10V actually).
