Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lake and Cho La Pass | March 2024 | Helicopter Return
In this 22nd episode we head to Nepal for an epic hiking adventure to Everest Base Camp. We avoid the crowds by diverting off the main EBC path to trek to Gokyo where we also summit Gokyo Ri and traverse Cho La Pass. We finish the hike with an epic sunrise hike up Kala Patthar before catching a helicopter back to Kathamandu.
Our trip was booked with Life Himalaya trekking who really went out of their way to look after us. If you are looking for company to organise your EBC trip thenI highly recommend Life Himalaya Trekking.

Thank you so much for your comments. Glad you enjoyed
This is awesome 🩵
What a day for it. If only we had a few more similar days. I'm from near Ardrossan and go over to Arran all the time. Love the place
I had wanted to do this route for years and waited until the weather was perfect.. It was amazing that I decided to extend it so i could spend even more time in this stunning location.. Wouldn't it be good if every Summer was like that? :)
@go_explore Aye but then again it's our crazy unpredictable weather that makes Scotland although just a few more glorious days would be great 😁
@@ianmcilwraith4479 Exactly and that is why I moved over the border all those years ago so I would be able to take full advantage of the occasional glorious day we get!! 😄

lovely, but you say winter without saying which month?
It was late February.. Thanks for pointing that out. I have updated the description.. Well worth a visit!
@@go_explore thanks its good to know that in February it is so good!!

Absolutely beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Yes that’s correct 👍
Hello, where is the last town where I can find a bar/restaurant? Vilaflor? Thanks so much.
Well com Nepal
Hi Darren, wonderful video and really makes me want to have this on my to do list. Would you mind sharing the gear you used, the bike and any modifications, the camping equipment as well as the gear used in making the video. What a wonderful trip!
Glad you enjoyed the video. The Badger Divide is epic. I was very lucky with the weather however 😊 Bike is a 3T Exploro with 1x SRAM 10-50 Eagle drivetrain The rear luggage is Tailfin The frame bag, top tube bag and handlebar bag are Apidura The tent I used is a single man Terra Nova Laser Competition (very light) 90% of this was filmed with a GoPro Hero10 but there are a few shots with an insta360 and the drone shots were with a DJI Air 2S Hope that helps and have a super trip if you decide to do it! 😊😊
Oh man, I will absolutely look into doing this! Thank you Darren!
Love your video thanks, I am doing EBC next march. Can I asked you what software you used to show trek animation on your video
Thanks for watching my video. I am sure you will have an amazing time on the trek, it is epic 😀Regarding the software, the maps were created in Adobe After Effects using a mapping plugin called GEOlayers3, Hope that helps and have a super trip!
Thank you for sharing this absolutely amazing video!
Wawow adventuring Himalayas 🎉🎉🎉🎉😅
If you went back, would you recommend a gravel bike or a road bike? What month were you in Tenerife? Booked 2 weeks at the end of January and just debating which bike I should bring.
In the UK I often use my gravel bike on the road in the Winter due to the awful weather and poor state of our roads. However, the tarmac is amazing in Tenerife as is the weather so no issue there. Also, there are lots of big climbs so a road bike is definitely the tool of choice unless you plan to do some off-road cycling.. Enjoy :)
@@go_explore Thank you for your response!
Hiii thank you for amazing video. I have a question, did you have a porter and a guide? How much did it cost?? And how much was the cost for hotel? Appreciate
Yes we had a guide and porter. Here is the link to our trip. This provides information and costs lifehimalayatrekking.com/gokyo-chola-and-ebc-trek.html
Wonderful video thank you so much. Funnily enough I was just 2 days behind you, arriving at Gokyo from Phortse (which takes you along the trail on the opposite side of the valley to Dole and Machermo) My journey ended at Gokyo as I had walked in from Jiri 16 days earlier so it was great to see footage of the Cho La. Huge few days for you with Machermo to Gokyo 4th Lake, then up Gokyo Ri and onto the other village, then over Cho La, then Kala Pattar. Wow. Were you carrying your own gear? Would you have done anything differently?
Hey! Thanks for watching my video and for the lovely feedback. Just checked out your hike on a map from Jiri and that looks epic.. I suspect you got lots of time away from the crowds on that hike? Our hike was amazing and it was great to reach EBC but in all honesty that was a little of an anti-climax after Gokyo and Cho La Pass. We did not carry our own gear on this trip but if I was to return (which I hope to one day) I would do something more obscure away from the crowds. Maybe something less structured where I just had a rucksack and took it day by day.. Regarding, what would I have done different.. Definitely would have took a couple of extra days at Gokyo and explored that area. It was amazing!! :)
Thanks v much for your reply. Yes, I sensed it had been a bit of a wrench for you leaving Gokyo. Such an incredible place.hey? I was last in Gokyo 27 years earlier and had promised myself, I would return. The village had changed a lot, 27 years ago, there was one small lodge! The other big change was that the glacier has melted, so that was a bit sad, but the view from the top of Gokyo is still of course utterly sublime. I loved your footage of the Cho La Pass And wonder if it was tougher than the hike up to Gokyo Ri? The Walk in from Jiri was super special although I got lost frequently as road construction has destroyed a lot of the old trails. It certainly quiet in terms of trekkers - I had the whole trial to myself for the first week Then it became a super highway around Lukla so it was good to peel off to Gokyo. Again thanks for your beautiful videos, so much work must’ve gone into making them!
I really enjoyed Cho La Pass. As the elevation was similar to Gokyo Ri then the effort was also similar. There is an initial climb from the teahouse then a small descent and then the final ascent to the actual pass. It is this last section that is the steepest but there are fixed wires to hold onto. We had perfect conditions; cloudless sky and no wind. Would have been a bit grim if it had been wet and windy! When I go back, I will definitely do a trip similar to yours which is totally off the beaten track :)
Absolutely amazing film that big lad loved it , what an experience for you both. Scenery , commentary and everything about it was just brilliant.
Cheers Big Lad. Glad you enjoyed. The video does not do justice to how immense those mountains are.. It is a amazing area to hike
What a sport…poor porters carrying ,others just watching and enjoying…ırish pub etc… thats not what it suppose to be…that just destroy culture, environment…its like spoiling, abusing
Great video. Are they actually having that stupid sign there in front of the base camp rock? I have no words to express how disappointed i would be to go there and find this idiotic thing obscuring the view.
The actual rock has toppled over but I agree with you that the choice of location for the sign is poor. It was a topic of significant conversation by everyone at Gorak Shep and divided opinion. The highlight for me was Gokyo Ri and Cho La Pass so I was not too bothered 😊
Beautiful & Magnificent❤ I hope one day i can go there too🙏
well come to Nepal
Great video! My wife and I did nearly the same trek a few years ago with Life Himalaya. We always look back and are so happy with making the choice of going up Gokyo Valley instead of the traditional EBC trek, the views from Gokyo Ri alone were worth the extra effort. It was also funny when we hit the intersection with the other trekkers on their way to basecamp, they were exhausted from the altitude, and we were feeling great having been up Gokyo Ri and over Cho La Pass for some real acclimitization.
Hey.. Thanks for watching my video and commenting. I hope it brought back good memories for you!! I never mentioned effects of altitude in the video becaue in all honesty we both were fine. No headaches or anything just a little shortness of breath. Like you said I put this down to the extended route and twice heading over 5000 metres and back down (Gokyo Ri and Cho La Pass) before getting to base camp. It certainly felt a little claustrophobic once we merged in with the crowds at Lobuche so I was so glad we chose the Gokyo route. In fact the only thing I would have changed would be an extra day at Gokyo because I thought the place was stunning!
Lovely video. I have been back in the Himalayan over the last three years after a hiatus of 30 years - Annapurna and Manaslu Circuits in 2021 and 2022, and in 2023 went back to the Khumbu with my wife and 23 year old daughter following the same route as you guys ( with extra nights in Namche and Gokyo, and a stay at Dragnak) …….. last time I was in the Khumbu was to climb Cholatse and Pumori (separate trips) in the very early 90’s. A lot of change since then, but still the Gokyo/Cho La trek is one of the best in the World. Well done to you guys …….
Thanks for commenting on my video. Hope it brought back good memories of your own trip.. I wish I would have took longer. We compressed Namche and I was desperate to spend longer at Gokyo. We always said that EBC via Gokyo would be our one trip to the Himalayas but now that we are back home I just have to go back. Maybe a different area like Annapurna.. BTW What an amazing feat to climb Cholatse and Pumori.. I will never forget how Pumori domintated the view when climbing Kala Patthar. It looked amazing!!!
Amazing documentary !!! Thank you.

Stunning visuals! The landscapes are so beautifully shot. Can’t wait to see more! sub & 👍19

Hi, very nice video you got here. May I know you the extra $800+ you paid for the helicopter ride to Lukla was it for per person? What camera are you using for this video? Thank you in advance!
Hi there.. Thanks for watching the video. Regarding the helicopter flight; Three of us shared the helicopter. the $800 was for myself and Maire. The helicopter company also got the refund from the flight. I think that was $400. I am not sure how much the third person paid but assuming it was the same as us then another $600 so $1800 in total. Our trip included the helicopter out fortunately but a lot of people were on a tight schedule trying to get back out and i was told the price of a helicopter from Gorakshep had shot up to over $3000!!!
Thank you for the reply. May I know which camera you used to shoot this video? Very clear and easy on the eyes to watch.
@@johnchye1313 Apologies for missing this - 99% of the video was shot with goPro Hero11.. I also did a few shots with an inta360 camera and my iPhone but only a couple of shots from them made the video
@@go_explore thank you for the info. Looking forward to see more of your TH-cam posts.
Hi, great video, what the tent you are using?
Hi there.. It is a Terra Nova Laser Competition.. Weighs less than 1kg and I have had it for 15 years.. I have dozens of trips with it. Amazing tent. I do not think they make it anymore. It has been replaced by Laser compact 1 (I think)
@@go_explore thank you
Excellent video. I really enjoyed that. I make similar videos, so I know the work that goes into producing them. That’s a really well edited wee film. We’re actually doing this route this weekend so thanks for giving me a good idea of what it’s like. Really looking forward to it now. 👏🏻👏🏻🎩
Hi Doug. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and comment. Glad you enjoyed 😀 The JMW is a super route I’m sure you really enjoy it. Hope the weather is kind to you! BTW I’ve seen some of your videos 👍
Do you live in Scotland ?
Yes I certainly do 👍

Planning a route on the hills south of Loch Awe tomorrow and couldn't see how to link the Lecainn forest track into the forestry and windfarm roads above Loch Glashan. Bothy is in the middle of that link so seeing your vid was helpful. Going a bit under biked compared with you so have chosen different route😆
Great wee vid. Bummer about the locked gates, should really be reported to access officer. Love Loch Awe on a sunny day it’s beautiful.
Really enjoyed this thank you.
Thanks for uploading , great vid .👌
Great video. Happy memories of my trip a few weeks ago 🤩
I hope you had similar weather to what I had!!! My first bikepacking adventure and the best I have done :)
What an epic place to ride. More video of descent please.
I have pretty much the entire descent on three different cameras.. Took me an age to edit it down!!! 😀
@@go_explore I imagine it would take a lot of time to edit to 15 or 20 minutes. A challenge with such long climbs must be carrying enough water going up for two hours or more.
Always wanted to do this but maybe not your route on arran. Lol
I did a version of this ride with my son (57) when I was 82. We started in Largs and over two days went via Arran Lochranza, Claonaig Tarbert, Portavadie and ferry over to Bute. . Finishing back to Largs .Temperature in September was 28. Then we drove down to York. Great son and dad trip
Hi Tom, thanks for commenting on my video. What an amazing trip for you and your son and you got amazing weather too.. There are so many options and I am also planning another trip this year with my wife but at a more leisurely pace so that i can enjoy the surroundings more...
Excellent,,,More Idiots trying to Prove ,,Something??
Brilliant and great coverage of the badger, something I really needed to see which has helped me decide on going via the badger instead of going down to Oban and over to Ayr for the full End2End (Downhill). Thanks for showing!
Glad you enjoyed the coverage. This was my first 'proper' bikepacking trip and it remains the best. The Badger is an epic route. Of course, I was also super lucky with the weather when I did it.. Hope you enjoy :)
Great video. Good to see the wild places in all their glory. My friend and I are planning to do this ride and get the two hills in before the summer is out. But think I might not camp.....or camp on the road! Those midges just love the heather. Can you tell me if there are any locked gates I'd have to heave my E-bike over (don't judge me! I'm old). BTW congratulations on your Gaelic pronunciation of the hill names.
Thanks for commenting on my video.. An ebike would be great on this route. I reckon that Bynack More would be rideable all the way with a little assistance (or someone fitter than me). There are no gates on the route although there was that section I had to man handle the bike onto a temporary bridge.. My pronunciation is not great unfortunately and you are the first person to give me positive feedback in that aspect :) Hope you have a great trip
This was really well filmed and edited well done, thanks for sharing it with us sir. I am thinking of walking it in April with a couple of cheeky wildcamps here and there.
Thanks for you comments.. Hope it gave you a good overview of the route.. I have hiked/ran sections in addition to the weekend trip I did and it is an epic route.. Lots of good locations for wild camping too (especially the section between Helensborough and Balloch)
Very very cool vid
what a fantastic adventure, i think i'll have to get on my bike and do the route during the summer. may i ask what bike computer you have? or can you recommend one for someone who doesn't know anything? many thanks. :)
The route is amazing. One of the best bikepacking trips I have done.. You will have an amazing time.. Regarding the computer, I have a Garmin 1030 which has a really long battery life.. All the Garmin computers work similar regarding the interface and how you navigate so should be straight forward to use...
Thank you for the Vid . im thinking about doing in in a few months (2024) but just the outer loop where I can head down in b+bs
The outer loop flows better as you can pretty much rude it all but there is a bit of hike-a-bike on the inner loop. Well for me there was 😊 Enjoy your trip! 👍
Great video, thanks very much for that 👍
That looks to be a great gravel bike route! Great video, cheers 🚴♂️👍
Well played mate... I'm moving to Malaga next year so will try and do some cycling in Sierra nevada
Lucky You!!! It is an epic area with some huge climbs and I only touched the surface.. Enjoy :)
So sad that there is no snow or ice at the top anymore. I was there on Uhuru Peak 15th of February 1989. The whole top was covered of snow and ice. We had to walk along a path never to set foot aside because of deep snow. On this climb I could take some grate photos of the glasiers. Nowadays they are melting ...melting... But :Great journey for your company! And: Did I hear a mountain called Aconcaqua?
Great ride and great footage. I am new to gravel road cycling. What gravel bars do you use?
Hi, thanks for commenting on my video. The bars that came with my 3T bike were aero and flat on the top and it was difficult to add things like lights, my drone controller mount etc. so I swapped them out for the "Zipp Service Course SL 70 XPLR" bar which have been great!
Great footage and a great adventure... carnage everywhere it seems after the storms!! - we really enjoyed it - ATB Tom
