Kill Team - The New Solo Format
Today we’re going to talk about the new edition of Kill Team and the new PVE mode it has, called Joint Ops.
We did have a single article on Warhammer Community giving a few details on this new play mode, but in this video I’m going to be talking about a lot more. That’s because a round of leaks did give us the full details from the Hivestorm box. Honestly the article is 90% of the info we needed but the leaks did answer few open questions.
So I'm going to talk around the various rules, how good a job I think they've done, and some ideas of how they could improve things in the future.
More details can be found on the 40k reddit here www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/1fcol8u/kill_team_hivestorm_leaks/

Warcry & Killteam - Casual or Competitive

What's the difference between a casual and a competitive game? Warcry is often considered to be a casual game while Killteam is seen as a competitive game, but why? In this rambling video, I try make the case that Killteam and Warcry as at their core, the same game. That the difference in perception is due to how the two games are pitched rather than how the games actually play. Hopefully I mak...

Warcry - Battle Traits

Battle Traits were introduced to Warcry as an optional rule as part of the Briar and Bone release. Essentially every warband gets a Battle Trait which is a special rule that gives them some sort of advantage. Definitely using AI mode. Everyone in my area only paints; they never actually play the games.
Great content. Its good to find another Irish miniatures game creator out there.
RPG books could certainly benefit from being in a smaller, digest-sized format. These huge books are so unwieldy at the table.
I thought it was a great battle report. Thanks for sharing. Hoping yoy have more on the channel.
Nice vehicle overview
I can finally put good use all the teams I bought but never had the time to learn to use
i play 40k this way but the steps 1234 are randomized as an action. So for example a d6 is rolled for the 4 unit types im my collection. Maneovre/ melee/support and hybrid. A unit might move/ say stationary or move and not charge. etc The AI in my games are 2000 points while my army is 1700. Games are decent but playing an opponent is better.
I’m really looking forward to using this to teach the new game. I’m going to be using 90 or fewer wounds worth of the Billy-basic trooper tier bodies (Termagants for marksmen & Hormagaunts for brawlers). Down the line I may try out using actual teams as the NPOs.
If you want to turn solo play into an amazing campaigns, the Kill Team battles could be substituted into Five Parsecs from Home.
40k player primarily here - i am planning on buying this to let my kids play in the grim darkness. And if gives me an excuse to buy some kill teams for factions I don’t play in 40k to use as the player character specialists trying to go against my space marines (who I have a wide range of choices to fit the various melee and shooty types)
Now we just need a "mod" for five parsecs from home and we are golden :D
Wdym? Five parsecs from Terra exists
@@Chuck9852 I wasn't aware, lol.
I think adding a behavior table tied to a dice roll like they have in in the warhammer quest system would work perfectly for this. You could use the initiative system for enemy activations as well.
I'm looking forward to this. I tend to have the AI target the model with the lowest reaming health when they have a choice. I will use many of the missions from all the Kill Team books I've collected. I think I will run my Blooded through a campaign using Spec Ops from the current edition.
Im thinking of using this to make space marine campaign onto co-op kt
The new preview with the Angels of Death seems like they've combined the Intercessor and Justian killteams together, so we should be able to get a better range of models. For co-op as written we could run 3 Space Marines and then have tons of random Imperial Guard fodder for them to command. Sounds like a lot of fun.
The only real question that I have about solo/co-op mode is how many turning points a game will have, because it is not mentioned in the sections. By looking at the missions it seems it can be a lot more than 4. But beside this, I'm pumped up! I can't wait to play it!
The rules P36 indicate that the mission ends 'as specified by your mission pack'. It's just that most of them say 'At the end of any turning point from the fourth onwards'. The joint ops mission definitely play out as long as it takes to win or lose. I guess otherwise you might have some weird scenarios where you slow play the game?
@@optimalgamestate ooooh I haven't seen that... That makes sense! Thanks man!
Mic to mouth 👍
Sounds like the perfect way to play with kids!

This could be very interesting. The genetic enemy profiles are a nice touch.
Great discussion and analysis, thanks
While I understand why you are stating it, it drives me crazy when people talk about either Horus Heresy games as "historical". They are not historical, it is a completely fictional universe with the "documentation" of it being fictional books. My dislike of using this word is that it lends credence to all the rivet counters and gatekeepers who insist you can't participate unless you have specific models that reflect THEIR idea of what is "historically" accurate which is of course complete nonsense.
I get what you're saying, but all the problems around rivet counting are already there. Hell the big drama with 40k currently is the fem Custodes because of a pre-conceived notion as the books never were explicit. For LI, I'm sure my Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists would get a few 'that would never happen' comments were I to ever field them as a combined force. So I think that particular ship has already sailed! The wargame books for the Horus Heresy series of games use the same style for the art and drawings as the Osprey series of historical reference books, so it is an intentional effort on GWs part to make this a 'historical' game. Although what that actually means is up in the air. My original point really was that the army construction rules are currently 'bad' and that the game is more fun with self imposed extra army construction rules. That can be taken to a negative extreme though, when you say "my army is lore accurate, their army isn't" you're just being a bit of a dick really. I do find it interesting that to really optimise a list you need to buy tons of infantry and discard 90% of the models. In this way the balancing factor is cash which I guess GW is fine with.
@@optimalgamestate Yeah I understand you view point and I can agree with your interpretation of the word, all other times I've seen someone use the term in regards to HH they were gatekeeping. Every single time. So I will always call BS on the use of the word in regards to HH.
Any advice on using the Solar Auxilia Superheavies? I have found them underwhelming thus far, vapourised in the first or second turn!
I've spent the week thinking about this and have no idea! They do seem to make good targets for heavy firepower as they present a great points per kill.
@@optimalgamestate I have been pondering your insight about the game as more of a narrative rather than competitive game, once you start looking for the best builds it gets very gamey & rather unsatisfying! With regards to the Super Heavies, I do not think they would work in tournament forces, but could be fun in friendly games where the objective is enjoyment of the lore & creating a story through the gameplay. Although, having said that, I would not complain if GW made some rule changes that allowed Baneblades & their kin play a bit more like the “mobile fortresses” they are described as!
Great recap. Waiting for more Legions Imperialis with baited breath.
I would argue that the importance of pre-game mechanics in Killteam (current Killteam, who knows for the new edition) is where you get into it being considered more competitive. There are a lot of decisions before the game that impact it, and if you don't know how to perform them well, puts you at a distinct disadvantage. A lot of that also includes knowing a lot about the opponent's team. The game play can be largely similar after that.
Thought this was a terrific discussion that is overdue.. I've never really understood the position that Warcry is all luck and kt is all strategy... But that notion persists, thank you for the thoughtful look at dispelling that myth
Team selection in Kill Team is far easier than in Warcry. Kill Team, pick a faction and buy the box. Every model that you need is in the box. With Warcry, unless you just go with the models in a two player box set, you’re faced with a much bigger set of options for building your team. And the models you want are probably not going to be found in a single box.
Team selection yes, but box assembly is a pain in the ass. There's always a 'right' way to assemble the box, usually with as many specialists as possible but it can be tricky when you're forced to pick one specialist or another. Usually 2 boxes is needed for the full roster, not a problem but certainly a hurdle at the start.
And yes with Warcry sometimes the best list involves buying 10 copies of the warband box and only running one model from each box 😱
First thing is to determine what people mean by competitive vs casual. What you see with many people who consider themselves competitive players is that they look for predictable rules and abilities. So, if you’re playing Warcry as presented, the fact that you use random cards to generate a scenario makes it much less predictable. Sure, you can creat custom scenarios but then you’re modifying the basic game to support a competitive setting. So the basic version of Warcry is random scenario generation and Kill Team is fixed preconceived scenarios. In other words... Warcry is a casual game that can be modified to support competitive play, whereas Kill Team is a competitive game that can be modified to be more casual.
Yes! But the default is determined by the core box contents. Warcry has matched play and Killteam has random mission decks but not in the box. So the perception of each game is defined by the presentation.
I would really appreciate a vid about deployment in Warcry. The way to allocate the three battle groups still eludes me.
It has to be done as evenly as possible by numbers. If you know nothing about the mission pack, then making them about equal strength is sensible, so a roughly even division by points isn't a bad place to start
That I can do! I'll add it to the list 😁
Great Vid topic :)
I love both games, specially Warcry. But there are a few things I don't like in Warcry. The game set up needs to be as KT, not that you choose and split your band before even know the deploy. The cards need text such as the name of the mini and the name oh the rune ability. The runes like "fly" or "beast" need to be differenciated in color or other way. And finally the abilities as runes instead of the name are a pain in the ass, if not for the Warcrier app that sorts them out and identifies the users by portrait.
On the runes being Skull, Skull, Skull and Skull XD. Definitely an issue and one of the reasons my card creator has names under the runemarks as an option. You're not wrong about the battle groups and deployment though, while in this video I do talk about how experienced players know what to do, at the same time you can often have issues if the event has no real differences between the battles or where you've got a massive selection of deployments to pick from and it's totally random. I'm a big fan of playing a single mission and letting players tailor the battle groups for just that mission. Alternatively, a series of games (e.g. 3) where the players know whats coming up and get to try split their groups in the best possible way across that. It is unfortunately quite common though, where even an experienced competitive Warcry player won't be able to work it out because unfortunately the tournament organiser doesn't understand how important it is!
@@optimalgamestate I teach Warcry to people that are looking for casual and relaxed games, and many end up liking Warcry but frustrated for the setup rules, so after the 1st game, I always setup the deploy and mission first and after that we choose the warband.
I love GW models and some of the lore too is :) Every year they mange to make soem new stuff that makes my mouth water somehow. Long since. When it comes to rules though GW are ..shal we say amateurs? They constantly mess up all their rules and FAQ upon release is standrad. For rules, sold rules and codexes that is... Warcry has few rules and therefore is my favorite GW gameset. Easily. Off course it has been changed up back and forth left-right-center constalty too. But it is a very good smooth FUN gameplay system. Kill team is good too but more rules heavy and it is GW-rules (written by soemone tahts eems drunk at best).
Yeah, I think GW under-invests into game systems unfortunately. Tight deadlines, minimal if any playtesting, a constant churn in rules to sell more books. I was delighted that the changes from Warcry v1 to v2 were minimal. I do still stand by the idea that Killteam is the same system just with a different twist, definitely a lost more to read and more traits to be aware of. On the flip side I did like Warcry getting the battle traits, so maybe there's a nice balance between them somewhere.
How dumb would it be to almost just bring titans for a regular game? Asking for a friend
:D they did add a variant of Legions Imperialis rules in the Great Slaughter to crazy massive battles so you can include more Titans. I would whole heartily recommend the Titanicus game, it's considered by someone one of the best GW games out there.
@@optimalgamestate it was removed from the steam store :(
Yo! Blood Angels drop pods here! You're correct, I got mixed up on the army builder but I was able to rectify it and have it match the squads correctly. That event was excellent and I've been to a good few local tournies since, developing my list. My L was to the winner of the event; I conceded after turn 1 because, frankly, I had nothing left! There's definitely a schism between competitive players about how far to push the cheese lists as no one I've spoken to who have played against The AlphaFists build have said they enjoyed it, but it's entirely legal and it shows that not all chapters were created equally in the rules. Both those factions are grim alone, together is a pretty negative play experience. My local group (verging on 20 local players) have some house rules to deal with the more egregious rules issues and try to treat it as a more "historical" game where building a powerful list is fine, but we self police anyone being a bit too cheesy.
Interesting to hear. I've been chatting with one of buddies about this and we've come to a similar conclusion that the game can be cheesed but it's better to treat it like a historical wargame and just have fun with it!
I am trying to do this. Whenever I download the card image and scale it down to 3.5x4 inches (rough card size) it gets really pixelated. Is there a way to fix that?
You shouldn't need to scale it down! It should already be card size!

Hello! Fantastic application but I have a question. When using the editor on an already created miniature (for example on bladeborns) I have seen that the points assigned to it are not equal to the points of the editor itself without manual adjustments. What is this due to?
Check Warcrier.net where you can find the the most up to date list of profiles. You might have the points for something that later had its points changed!
Nice! I was planning to start a campaign :)
I definitely would like to hear your thoughts about the Hive Secundus campaign rules especially after your 2 player campaign video from a while back. It seems the rules the box offers follows your advice about GM’ing a Games Workshop 2 player experience.
I saw this comment when it came out and I've been thinking about it a lot. I've even picked up the Hive Secundus box in my hands and thought about it. Then later I was on ebay looking at how much it would cost to just get the rules from the box >< It's definitely an interesting topic, but I'm already swamped with models to work through! I even have the Ash Wastes box to do! So thank you for the comment and if you see me doing a video on the Hive Secundus Box you'll know you broke me eventually :P
Would you recommend just grabbing the Khorne team booster pack? As it has more khorngors?
Getting another box is almost the same price! If you want the full roster options and the price isn't a problem then yeah they booster pack looks good especially now you can get from the normal warhammer site rather than having to hir forgeworks. That said, theres an interesting discussion about whether 2 khorngors is better as you only get one blitz a turn, so if you're not a completist I'd suggest trying with just two first and see how it goes bbtactics.com/bb2020-khorne-starting-rosters/
Awesome, we need more videos like this
This was great, thanks!
Nice! Will the Warhammer RPG videos have their own playlist?
There is now!
Great video man, you do a excellent job laying out the system.
For JO, healing the bearer is really good. If only you culd use the ability. The priestess killing something and using the triple never, ever happened to me in the year I have been playing JO. You don't want the priestess in combat. Only t3 means she dies fast and you want her alive. If she kills something, it's luck, on executing a fighter with a few wounds left. The Bloddy Tribute triple is so hard to use it never gets used, and as such their battle trait will be the same, I think. The only way to heal you bearer is to put the pristess in danger, not the best deal
Sad but true. I suspect we'll see an FAQ update for these soon enough, so fingers crossed we'll see a change for JO there.
Where are the Warcry rules for these guys? I don’t see them in the Rules download for Skaven. Also, did you make those Warcry cards for this Warband?
They were in one of the White Dwarfs. Check out warcrier.net/docs/warbands/chaos/skaven/#skittershanks-clawpack for the rules. Cards can be found here www.patreon.com/posts/skittershanks-92698759 although I'm not sure if there has been an update since, check Warcrier version for comparison and load the .json files into the card creator to adjust if you need tio!
@@optimalgamestate - Thanks a bunch! This really helps. They’re not in the FAQ yet.
I'm a big fan of this update as an idea - I think it's a fun way to incentivise taking less allies - I just wish they were a little more consistent - some of these abilities are really flavourful and useful, and then others kind of just feel like they ran out of ideas 😅
i think you misunderstood the bonesplitters ability, it is actually pretty interesting IMO. so lets say you roll a double 1, a double 5 and a 3 and 4. Before it is decided whohas the initiative and assigns wild-dice first, you get to choose to reroll the ones, in a hope of maybe get another six to make it more likely to get a rampage. So still pretty minor as it is only 1's but an ability that can be usefull in all four rounds and can give you a better chance of tripples and quads. So pretty fun IMO. Apart from that, nice video run-down. I really like these on theory, but i wish they were slightly more balanced. A kurnoth hunter leader getting a free teleport in the first round to immedeately move and attack, compared Askurgans maybe being able to heal or Claws making disengage slightly worse is just one example of some pretty weird balancing. I thought for sure they would have used this to give better abilities to weaker warbands
Yes! I totally missed that. Thanks for explaining it :) I still think of the Initiative Phase as the Hero Phase which is what totally confused me. As to giving the better versions to the weaker warbands, I suspect that was the intent but they can't always hit the mark everytime.
Massive gratitude for this! Having all of them in one place for a review really helps with perspective. Excited to give these a go, especially to have undying flame puppies!
This is the sort of thing to which the Community site should have dedicated an article. Had it not been for my semi-weekly swing by your channel, I would not have heard of this change. Good stuff, overall. Interesting to see the designers all but formalize the separation from the original Warcry ideal that the only passive information for any given fighter be the numbers on the card, which has been increasingly suggested by the recent warbands. It's a complication, but one that was probably necessary in order that certain factions have their flavors represented in the game, and to enable newer warbands to distinguish themselves from the rest. In many if not most cases, the battle trait doesn't replace an ally for "optimized" listbuilding. This is especially so in cases where they opted to reinforce the theme of an already one-dimensional warband (e.g., Riverblades), because the inclusion of allies is typically to bring a profile type or ability that your warband otherwise lacks (I don't think that even allies can help the Riverblades, but it was the first example that came to mind). In other instances, though, it's a strong incentive to play "mono-faction" (e.g., Ironjawz). I think that you have misinterpreted the Bonesplitterz ability. The "initiative roll" -- though that term does not appear in the rules that way -- refers to the six dice at the top of the round that become singles (for initiative) and Ability Dice -- hence "each result." It's a pretty good trait.
It definitely felt like the designers managed to sneak this one under the radar for us. They were going to be doing the book anyway so it definitely didn't require any additional budget like presumably even something small like a pdf on the website might need. Going through them it also felt like these were in the works for a while, presumably pre Cities of Sigmar change which would explain why that was weird and why the Blacktalons and Order of Azyr weren't there. Maybe they weren't part of the original warcry plan. You're right about the changes in development too. If I recall right, it was Jervis Johnson first with the original concept, Sam Pearson to make it a reality. Then second edition Dave Sanders joined the team. Hard to tell what was his and what was Sam's out of the changes but he's definitely in the list for that massive rebalance which I did like. Now we have John Bracken as the face. Although it's likely there are lots of people in the background in GW unnamed who also deserve some credit. I have been enjoying the current series of stuff, but every so often something does appear which bothers me like an ability you need to track the value of throughout the turn or triggers that have to happen which could be easily forgotten. Anyway, another topic. Thanks for steering me straight on the Bonesplitterz ability. I keep thinking of the Initiative Phase as being the Hero Phase (it was that in first edition right), so I totally missed that. It definitely looks a lot better now and certainly fits what seems to be the overall theme. If you made it this far, thank you for listening to my ramble XD
