🤔🤨🤷😁😎👍
You don’t have enough head for the cam you have , tighten up the stall and regear.
Whats your reasoning that the cam is too big?
I don't think that was the point he was trying to make. Now IDK what heard you have on the engine but he was saying, better flowing larger intake runner heads will make maximum use of your current camshaft. Is that accurate info? Again, IDK. But that's what he was getting at. Not that you cam was too big. Your heads are too small. But idk shit.
@@michaelphelps5064 i have a different thought on it. But I would like to here hear other opinions. Thats why we test and experiment. I'll make a video on my reasoning
What does this car weigh ? Sorry if I missed it. Roll cage/bar ? My 383 71 Nova with power steering, interior, street drag radials mufflers and tail pipes over the differential and pump gas runs 10.28 just the way its driven 2000+ miles a year. I have about 8k in the engine.
3000 pounds, 370 it has a 8 point. Making some changes looking for 9s
We built 706 out of a 468 stock block and sprayed 250 so it made 950 the block held up and is still a good engine today.
Thats good power, mid 8s in the right chassis easy
How did you do that
@@armonpeterson1947 who are you asking?
@davidreed6070. He said they built a 706 out of a 468 stock block
@armonpeterson1947 i believe he was referring to horsepower he made
Did you take Daren Morgan's advice and get a big block and stroke it. What power adder are you using?
No, this one was of my own accord to build the baddest engine I can for the money. I plan on shoving as much nitrous I can.. low side would be 400. I have a speed tech fogger set up
Hey Joe, where you goin with that Nova steering wheel in your hand.....😁 Hey, you're in the Maryland area if I recall correctly right, if so are you going to Cecil dragway Memorial weekend? If you are a friend of mine is going to be there with his '70 Nova for some test and tune.(Not sure what day though) He has a page on here called Hatch's Recreational Engineering. He's a big Nova guy, he just did a bunch of work to the engine in his '70 Nova to see what kind of improvement he will have. It's not going to be anywhere near 10 seconds but should be in the 13s I'm guessing? That's not a bad improvement from 15.9 with the same engine. Anyway maybe you can say hello to him for me if you see him there, tell him Derek said hello, if you get a chance? Maybe you guys can do a collaboration video or 2 together? Ok, you can put bigger valves in, just make sure to knotch the block. They do that to big blocks all the time to unshroud the intake valve as it rises off the seat. The BBC head gaskets even have that area open so a knotch can be put there. Do a search on it and you'll see. I say that because with the kind of cam you're going to want to run you're going to want a bit more support for the kind if spring pressures for the cam you'll want to run?😎👍
In some earlier videos on this block I did the notching of the block!... im in Ct but plan on doing some traveling around once I get the nova where I want it
@@brokejoebuilds5165 So you're good to put bigger valves in. Knowing how you like your stuff to run, I'm sure you're going to set the 496 up to spin to win, you can't win if you don't play. You're gonna want a little extra support for those valves with 600 lbs of spring pressure over the nose.😯😁 Ok, I think Dan is in NJ he says that in his videos, middle NJ. He goes to Cecil county dragstrip in MD. Maybe if you make it out that way Dan will be there too? That's way to far for me but maybe a road trip would be fun in the future?😎👍
8000 rpm.... so a littl more than 600
Drill both out, it will be fine.
If the heads weren't ported as far as they are would say yea.. but I cut alot of material out of it
@brokejoebuilds5165 you would only be cutting 1/32 from the wall, I honestly believe that you would be fine
Yeesh !
You’re way ahead of the curve …a lot of people got away from what you’re doing . Great job 👍🏾
I appreciate that 🙏
Well, they average Joe only makes so much money and I never had it so I never could afford to really build an engine like I wanted to so it doesn’t work even secondhand parts were expensive. You should know that I do admire everything that you seem to know what to do for as young as you sound, I’m 72 years old
Im 36 years-old, this is all I loved doing as a kid. My dad is a mechanic and used to race. He did the best he could with the limited founds. This you tube is really homage to him. My foundation he gave me, built my first engine, transmission, rear, taught me to weld and fabricate all by him. I just took what he taught me and built upon it. Thanks for checking on the channel. Im gonna do a buttom of the bucket cheap build soon.
Whats up cool what kind of tran are u running is a trubo 400 ?
Powerglide with a 1.76 gear
They sell a tool, it's kinda a drill bushing that guides a drill bit to slot the push rod hole. Or you can drill it big enough for a brass sleeve that will give you the clearance you need.😎
The problem isnt drilling the hole, it the strong possibility that I'll drill into the intake port because of the porting. If it did break through it would make for a tuff repair without pulling everything apart
@@brokejoebuilds5165 The tool will only make the hole longer and if you sleeve the hole, no more air leak.🤷
The Louis tool, might help, but it uses a 5/16 drill, and slots the hole towards the valve, for 1:6 rockers
That might work!
@@brokejoebuilds5165 That's what I was trying to tell you.😁 I would of posted an ink with an El but the tube doesn't allow those.🙄😎👍
Are you running a rev kit?
No, I think I should have enough spring.... i think lol
@@brokejoebuilds5165 It wouldn't hurt spinning at those RPMs. Spinning over 7,500 RPM is where springs start breaking down and start loosing their pressure. NASCAR changes springs every race. I love buying those for street/strip that will never see over 7,500 RPM. I bought a set of those before for 40 bucks, the new cost they claimed was 600!😯 They worked great.😎👍
Broke Joe the car is awesome and fast. I love it! What rear gear, tire height and size converter are you running? By the way...good luck and keep the vids coming man! Thanks nephew!
Currently 4.56 gear, 28x10.5 and a 8in converter.. there may be some changes with everything as I look for a lower et. I just found a little problem that may have been slowing the car down some.. next video
My dream car dad had one wish 4.3 v6. Face speed and traction bars beat up on 5.0 mustangs 🎉
This car was once 350, 5 speed too. Till the trans broke, then I went auto.
We have some weird dream cars 😁
When you can swing it, get a gopro and some mounts (they come in packages with lots of stuff) they stabilize themselves and you don't need the bestest and newest ones, old ones work good. I have an 8 and it takes really nice video when I use it.
Your 100 percent right, I was already thinking the same thing. This phone mount was a fail.
@@brokejoebuilds5165 still its cool video how it freaks out every time you apply some throttle. Its a good effect, so not entirely fail.
Pretty decent bracket car ya got there. Low dollar to build it and tons of fun racing it. Thats how its done man.
Still working on it, car is showing some promise though.
Happy to help ✊🏾‼️
❤
Good job filming nephew. Are you hiding the finish line mph on purpose? I wanted to see what mph a 10.50s pass is.🤷 Anyway looked like the car is running great.😎👍
No not at all, the 10.45 pass was 129mph
Thank you, he just got back from college the day before and was a big help!
I wanna go fast 🥲
❤❤❤
Depends on your definition of cheap I guess! Your average guy does'nt have $10,000 worth of parts laying around!!!!
Keep an eye on the channel. Im putting an engine together soon that will be an example. I definitely dont have 10k in this life time. But its also being ready to make deals when they come.
Dude I just subscribed to ur channel especially ur from Connecticut to
Great channel man are you guys out of Connecticut ?
Yes sir born and raised lol
You too?
First thing you made some passes. Second thing you didn't break the car you will have minor glitches keep tuning 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Ill be back at it tm
This channel will blow up major watch I can feel it
Man I appreciate that. 🙏 Thank you
Maybe they'll let me comment now, its been a few days. Back in the 90s when I was bracket racing my 79 Formula, I picked up .4 in the quarter by repacking the wheel bearings, trued the front rotors, greased the caliper pins so the calipers could move freely, set the rear drums for no drag and removed the adjusters. I put a dab of high temp grease on the backing plate tabs where the shoes rub against it. Doesn't take much grease in there, just make sure it all moves freely. Also did an alignment, I was taking classes at the local VoTech so I had a heated shop to work on my stuff in winter, and I could do alignments for free and get credit for them no less. Since the front end is up under power, I did the alignment with the nose 2" above static ride height. Zero camber, 3 degrees caster, couldn't get one side to lean back any farther than that, and half a degree of toe in Not only did the car go faster, it went straighter down the track and in the burnouts. It went from a work out pushing the car through the lanes, to leaning against it and it would roll. Then I blocked off the grilles in the bumper with some thin sheet aluminum and cracked the hood up at the back as well as removing the rubber strip that seals the hood and the cowl. That got me another .3 reduction in ET. At 3750lbs without me, and I was 260 at the time, and a 4.10 gear which slowed it down compared to 3.42s, it was running 12.1-11.9 and would be VERY consistent. The 4.10 moved the 455 through the RPM range too fast, and with 28" tires it was out of RPM before it hit 900ft. So the last 400ft of the track it was at 6000rpm, which is not a good place to be with factory Pontiac connecting rods. Besides the factory iron heads I was running won't flow enough air to spin a 455 higher than 6000 anyway. Thats nearly half the track where its not pulling, and yes it slowed it just as much in the 1/8th too. Your SBC is quite different, a 2.73 to 3.55 gear will make it slower, but my 455s run faster with those gears than anything deeper. You also don't have nearly 600ftlbs from 2500 to 4500 rpm. Back then 11.99 required a roll bar. I couldn't afford that so the 4.10 gear slowed the car from 11.40s so I didn't need to put one in. Not bad for a car with power windows, all steel, with a really mild Pontiac engine in it that I could take on road trips and even with the 4.10 gear and 850 Holley it got 15mpg, but going faster than 55mph had that 455 turnin lots of RPM. The brake and suspension work paid off huge, and I had to slow it down again to avoid the roll bar requirement. The outlaw 1/8 mile track near my base in South Carolina didn't care about roll bars and tech inspections, so I put the 3.42 gears back in it and it went from 7.7-7.8 to 7.4/7.3 ETs. I had around $4000 in the entire car. Today that Firebird is a lot lighter, still has the stock doors and power windows, but it has an aluminum headed 461 stroked 400 in it, and its around the same weight as your Nova. Haven't raced it yet... busy with the 68 LeMans and the Bird is going to be a fun street car again.
Sound like a fun ride, my disco nova was a fun street toy as well. To bad a non licensed driver ruined it for me last fathers day. .. my machinist is building a pair of small displacement pontiac motors for a trans am type series. Under 302 cubic inches with a factory block. I should ask if he would let me take some video of it. I running my nova tm with everything freed up now but you make a solid point with the alignment because its definitely off Slightly on the car.
What is the motor combo?
In a earlier video I talk about it more. Its all second hand stuff. Its a 370, 13:1 in a stock block. Solid roller, sportsman 2 heads ported by me, as well as super victor intake I ported. 750 pro form carb. Only thing I bought new were rings, bearings, pushrods, timing cover, valve covers.
Good looking car! You might try leaving ay a lower rpm, some cars like to flash the converter more than others. Sounds like it’s laboring a touch off the hit in the video. Car has a great sound to it!
You may have something there that last pass was no chip and it was the worst 60ft... it was also drowning in fuel 😆 🤣 im going back out Saturday. Trys somethings out
Stu pid fart can muffler cars!😂 What's that weigh what about 3,000 lbs? Wow, 8,000 rpm!😯 How often do you have to change springs? Man 10 is about 1.5 seconds faster than I want to go. Car is running great.😎👍
2820 without me 2980 with. Hopefully not much for the springs needling to be changed. As long as the valvetrain dont float it will last. I hope lol
Awesome build! Big fan of your content
Thanks
Happy birthday Joe! 🎂
Appreciate it 🙏
I realy enjoy your channel i have a 68 id like to build a similar engine as to yours. What sportman heads are you using? And your camshaft part number. Id like to see 9s that would be awsome.
Ill be honest, the world sportman 2 wouldn't be my first choice unless you got a smoking deal and can do some port work. If you can port you can get them to come alive. A good out of the box head would be the pro maxx deal. They move great air out of the box. The cam I got second hand I know the .050 is in the 260 range. I will be happy to give you better recommendations, if you give me displacement and more information on your desired combo. Thanks for supporting my channel!
Nova looks and sounds great
Thank you!
Broke Joe, I gotta give it to you man you sure can build an engine. I got me some sportsman series heads hopefully my 350 will be done next year maybe sooner. 😎
There is definitely more there, we will be extracting what we can little by little. We found some minor problems when were at the track
SNOT Rocket !!!!
Soon!! Promise
Happy Birthday BROTHER! No better way to spend your bday than at the track. Car looked strong, you're putting down some good times with that. You never did post any times with the Vette, what was that thing with that engine in it, 9s?😯😎👍
This motor is going back to the chevette with a health dose of spray.
a little aerodynamic inner fender wells mifgt help
Maybe something I can test later 😁
In the day the world sportsman ll was the head to have. It took work but they would make power.
Yea, they have been working well for me. Newer castings are better but with some love these heads really do work. Today I find out how well 😀
Try a Carb Cheater, lets you change your air fuel ratios with an app on your phone. I think it's about 300 bucks but some air fuel gauges are more than that. This gizmo lets you know your ratios displayed on your phone. I think it can data log as well? But not 100% sure. With one of those, the carb guys can tune with a computer(phone) just like the fuel injection guys. Haven't seen anyone use one for drag racing yet, only have seen install vids for them.😎👍
Ill look it up, never heard of it
@@brokejoebuilds5165 Thunderhead289 from here invented it, there are a bunch of videos about it on here too.😎👍
If you can find the parts used that you'll need and they're good nothing new about using used parts. Every engine I've rebuilt was from a junkyard or second hand. Those JE pistons aren't cheap good find if they fit the bill. FYI pretty much everyone selling aftermarket rods are getting the casting from China even scat.
I think I got the pistons from skip white in there garage sale section. The pistons were new in the box but they were orderd in the early 2000s
Its the way to do it!
Dude be a man a man and do what you can do with the big block and stop playing around with a baby motor you are vary smart and you know it🙂👍
Lol 😅 I'm working on it, the bbc will get in there. Im still gathering parts.. almost there though. I will have to build another transmission too. The sbc will go into the chevette long term.
10s on sbc is doing pretty good Id say
@gordocarbo thanks
The 60's were the era for some great car names. Tempest just has that "wanna play around and find out"rings to it because you never know what someone ordered under the hood. I had a 71 LeMans that had a Corvette 327 and Tirbo 350 in it, fun car when it was tuned right.
What block are you using? An about what weight is the car?
010 block, originally 4 bolt with steel caps. As of weight, idk yet. I plan to scale it at the track this friday if the scales are open at the track.
Ok. I built a stock block 421. Just ran my personal best this weekend. 6.78 at 103. I weighed around 3500 with me in the truck.
@@keithfairley5335 solid performance, what head was on it?
220 afr. Howards solid roller cam 273/287 at 50 680/650 lift 112 Lisa rings gapped for a 300 plus. But probably won't see over a 200 maybe a 250 at the most because of the block. 1050 carb with super vic intake. 1.5 rockers 4500 stall with 350 trans with brake and 4.56 gears
