The Making of a Custom Sheath

This is a small look into the painstaking detail that goes into one of my custom sheaths. A sheath of this sort will run you about $90, but not quite all that if you’re adding it to your knife order. Nice work on the knife and sheath
Thank you! I appreciate you watching the video and chiming in on the comments. I love these little knives, they go anywhere and are that last companion when all the other gear has to be shed.
Здравствуй, Шон! Отличный нож получился и ножны ему под стать!
Thanks so much for watching Anton! (I’m guessing that is your name from what I can remember of Russian) glad you enjoyed it and the sheath! These ones are a bit more work, but very satisfying to complete.
@@MarsFireForge да, всё правильно, меня так зовут!
Great knife Sean. I was disappointed that you didn't do any bushcraft with it. There's a tree in the background! You could have cut some branches, batoned the knife through the trunk, split kindling, shaved a couple of feather sticks, and started a fire on the floor with a ferroceramic rod! Admittedly, you would have to sleep outside afterwards. Still, I liked the video and was impressed again with such small knives cutting 1 inch rope.
Hahaha some indoor bushcraft! Maybe I would have but that Christmas tree was expensive!

@@MarsFireForge I bought the black handled mini-Accipiter from Sean's video, and its the same. It is better than the video makes it out to be. I have been lavish in praise of Mars Fire knives, to the point of sounding like a fanboy. So, even though the exchange rate is against me, I decided to put my money where my mouth is and bought one of Sean's knives. The one in this video with the black handle. It cuts just like it does in the video. I even whittled slivers off a mild steel rod with no edge damage. It cuts right out to the tip of the knife, something no knife I've ever owned has done. I would recommend Sean's knives to anyone.
@@darylbrenton4839 Thanks Daryl! SO glad it got down there and is serving you well! I love knowing that something that was born in my forge is now serving in Australia, that’s awesome. In fact, though I’ve had military/ govt guys take my knives overseas, you’re the first person to have bought a knife overseas so that’s pretty cool!
@@MarsFireForge I'm glad its down here too.
Another great knife. I'm impressed with how easily it pierced multiple layers of clothing, especially the time you let go of the trousers before stabbing them. If anyone doubts how well made these knives are, I received mine today, and repeated many of the tests used on this channel. It passed all of them, even whittling mild steel without marring the edge. Able to do aggressive work, and precision cuts. Best knife I have ever owned.
Hey it arrived, awesome!! I’m so glad it wasn’t one of things where it just looked good on camera but failed in real life, what a disappointment that would be. I love the model you bought , considered it being my edc for a while, hope it serves well!
@@MarsFireForge I'm glad you didn't keep it. This is the perfect size for a utility knife, and this one is so versatile. It shaves hardwood curls so fine, that I didn't believe my eyes at first, and then it can rip out big chunks as well. I love it.
Now that it's razor-sharp, nice work 👍 👏 👌

I like the knife. When someone starts using words like pumped, awesome and amazing I am afraid I stop watching just there. Nothing against you or the knife, but I did finish high school 38 years ago, was never a hippy or a surfer. Just speak to a person like a grown up.
@@RamonMarais-k2k Hey Ramon, glad you liked the knife! Yeah when I rewatch these after I make them I notice I use the same words over and over, especially “super”. Funny what you notice when you see yourself on camera. Thanks for engaging with the video!
Very cool! Curved edges are always my favorite for cutting. I have a Klein stripping knife, it’s a bit different of a curve, maybe more like a hook. That’s a cool knife for sure, if I was still stripping wire daily for a living I’d have to get one for sure to pull out on the job.
@@BadlandsRifleman thanks! Really glad you like it, it was a fun project for sure. I didn’t even know this knife was so often used by electricians but I’m realizing there is a decent demand for it! Thanks for the comment
Thanks! I’d never cut with one like this before, it going through that 2x4 blew my mind. It’s not ultimately versatile but it’s extremely good at what it specializes in.
Yes, some knives can be used for almost anything, like the Accipiter. Others, either due to size or shape, are very specialised but they do the job well. Otherwise, one design would fit all uses. This is like a cross between the Sheepsfoot knife and a recurve, with double the power for cutting with the tip.
@@darylbrenton4839 yes actually I’d really like to make a sheep’s foot or seax version of this, that would be awesome!
Like an ultra-aggressive Wharncliffe knife. What a cutter! Well done. Great explanation of the advantages of this style of knife and demonstration of its power.
First 10 seconds were what would be the name if he put it on amazon
Wow! People getting all hot under the collar about this video. The purpose of this video is to show the difference between a mass produced knife and a Mars Fire knife. Sean chose a similar knife to demonstrate the features of his design, and he chose a well known producer of quality knives to compare it to. Its not an unreasonable comparison, because the author is showing that they ARE apples and pears. There are different choices made in production, for different reasons. These are practical, hard wearing, using knives. Sean can make these quality control choices because he isn't restrained by the bottom line and shareholder expectations.
@@darylbrenton4839 yeah that’s the exact thing, I’m glad you’ve got it! I’m saying this is an apple, this is a pear, I think the pear is better, here’s why.
@@MarsFireForge I watched this again, its better than I remembered. You could start out saying that you will be comparing apples and pears if you do another comparison video. Also, is that thick piece of foam rubber you used to sharpen your beater knife the one you use to put the initial convex grind on your knives?
@@darylbrenton4839 yeah if I do another I might say something up front like that. Yes that piece of foam rubber is what I use to refine my convex edge after I put it on with the belt sander. I have a video I’m making of an entire knife build so you will see it briefly then!
@@MarsFireForge Great, I'm looking forward to that.
Nice work
@@The_Watchful_Eyes thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
I agree with the comment below. Beautiful.
No comments giving a production knife with similar abilities yet. Perhaps you should do another of these tests in the future, perhaps as part of another video, and ask again.
@@darylbrenton4839 yeah I was even thinking of reposting this video since I think it’s a great one, but didn’t get as many views as my new ones!
@@MarsFireForge Perhaps you could re-edit it, maybe with something added. It really is a great video, and the one that made me realise just how good you designs are.
I like your work, and I find the idea of expounding on the virtues of archaic tools as relevant solutions to modern needs while wearing an instant Ramen shirt deliciously ironic. A tip for your website; it would be helpful to include specs for each knife, i.e. blade length, thickness, height, OAL, handle material, etc.
@@geneshin7031 Hahaha What’s more ancient than noodles?! lol. Thank you, I absolutely need to do that, in fact I wrote a note for myself to add that to the site. Thanks so much for engaging with the video and the website!
I have spent hours trying to sharpen flat grind knives over the years, spent dozens of hours watching videos, and a couple of hundred dollars on diamond stones and other sharpening devices. But, I could never maintain consistent sharpening angles. Therefore, I would sharpen a knife successfully on one go, and blunt the blade the next. It is as you say, for those blades, you have to sharpen like a machine. The convex grind is simple and repeatable, as it is a natural motion for our bodies. So simple that it should have been obvious.
@@darylbrenton4839 I agree 100%! I’ve heard some people say convex is hard to sharpen, but it’s just objectively not. You can be less precise with sharpening convex and still do it right.

I am realy tired of dumb qeustions. How well is which made? What is your budget? Lastly as you say how are which heat treated?
@@RamonMarais-k2k yes all these things make huge difference in determining your knife choice. It’s not always as easy as comparing steel to steel or edge geometry to geometry. What do I want the knife to do? Now what design/ heat treat/ steal best fits that purpose. And of course, as you said, budget is a huge factor too. Thanks for watching!
Success, sort of. I finally fixed the tip so that it now cuts the sisal rope cleanly, and zips through 3/8 inch cotton rope like it wasn't there. I was starting to think you were using a super-steel for your knives, alloyed with kryptonite and unobtainium! Unfortunately, I overheated the rest of the blade before quenching and the edge chipped massively during hard testing. I need a longer forge to evenly heat a longer blade. The more I try this, the more I respect your skill, Sean.
@@darylbrenton4839 Good to see progress there! It’s so discouraging when a knife has a chip or heat treating problem. No cure for it but time and trying again, but beginning the process again can be a pain for sure. Glad you’re experimenting and getting more into it, and thank you!
@@MarsFireForge Yes. Large grain growth in the chipped areas, most of the straighter part. It held up to chopping through a Eucalypt branch around 1 1/2 inches, but chipped out 1/8 inch deep arcs when chopping through a Black Wattle sapling a little bigger than the base of my thumb. That heartwood is HARD!
