STEVE'S LOFT PART 2 LAYING THE CORK UNDERLAY
Re Easi-shunt magnets. How wide is the plastic strip between the magnets?
Hello Steve Do you treat the cork with any sealants or diluted P V A . A very interesting video than You.
No but I do use a water proof p v a glue to put it down
Where have you gone
Hi still hear starting to get back into modeling dun a school boy error made my layout to fit my old car had a new one and it will not fit so making it fit the loft when it is ready I will start to film again not sure when still tidying the loft for now thanks for asking 😅 👍
Where are you
Hi Derek I'm still hear still not got my mojo back it must be coming back as I'm starting to watch some utube about model railways and starting to go in the loft And looking at whiteleeg junction so hopefully I'll be back??? Thanks for asking and sorry I took so long to get back to you
@@stephenrsims4034 good to hear from you mate get back into it as I’m missing your down to earth videos. Especially laying cork as I tried laying just under track and found it easier to lay over whole board. Hope to see you again soon.
How are you ?
What size cable do you use for leads
Found your videos brilliant straight to the point. Being inspired for my next layout to build multi height boards different levels and wondered how you make the baseboard to do that. Thanks in advance as I know you are always busy.
Great video Stephen, I have two locations on my layout planned that will need to auto coupling etc and this system perfect, thanks for demo. hope your keeping well, good call for the man cave ha ha
Good to see you back Steve . I am thinking about changing from my lever frame to a control panel, so this is very timely. Stephen
Hi thanks this is a good bit of kit and when you finish playing when you come back to play one day or week later they come back where you left them .thank again
Great to see you back Stephen, Well explained and informative you have a good style of presenting your videos to people of all skill levels and ability's keep up the good work and keep safe
Thanks i have missed it the rest did me some good i'm looking at doing moor filming i cut a lot out off this film or it might have been over 1hr long 😀 so with the left over i can do another one about making the wiring loom thanks again
Stephen first of all glad to see you back. Very interesting mate, like what you have done but I am a long way before I get to that stage. I have worked out that just for my terminus and yard I will need crossing double slip x 2 and turnouts x 30. So a lot of wiring and headaches ahead for me. Again glad to see you back. Regards Chris
Hi Chris thanks i'm about to start to wire the 3rd panel on this one i have a 3way and single slip to wire up but i will be using something from a company called S.P.S hopefully a lot quickly than this one did 😆😆
Hi Stephen, do the peco brick edges come as you have them or have you added plasticard and corbels to them? cheers Paul at Sandling Junction
Hi paul they come as you see them i think there in packs of 5 or 6
Hi Paul sorry did not get back to you edges come as you see them i think inpack of 5 or 6
@@stephenrsims4034 Hi Stephen Thank you. the guy from Peco said that they are plain plastic and brick paper is added. Yours look like they are embossed plstic brick and the cobbles too, so are yours from a different manufacturer, or am I not getting something here lol, cheers Paul
Stephen R Sims hi again Stephen, sorry to be a pain. I am still struggling to find the edging you used. The relief brickwork is what I am seeking. Are yours a Peco product? Or someone else’s . The oo Peco side walls do not come with relief brick work. So I need to find out where yours came from. You mentioned having relooked at you video these are n gauge maybe Peco do those in relief and not oo which seems odd. I hope you can help in this please. Regards paul
@@stephenrsims4034 Apologies once again, no need to reply Ive got to the bottom of this issue. the difference is n and oo no tooling for oo what a pain.. Cheers Stephen.
Dear Steve, just to say I have very much enjoyed your videos and found a great deal of guidance and inspiration from them. They must have taken a lot of energy to shoot them! And to add, sorry not to have had anything from you since the above but, if the right kind of mojo hasn't returned that gives you the incentive to enjoy your hobby as well as making videos, I understand! I just hope you're still enjoying the hobby and that life is still allowing you enough time in the loft. I've been kidding myself I have time to build an N gauge layout in my loft and after three years, I've just -just about- got some track laid and working- and I bottled out of fitting point motors with polarity switching because my soldering' still so ropey! And it's only a simple end to end job.. Anyway, all the best and hope all's well.
Hi there my mojo is starting to come back .been in my loft to repair some of the track that i was not happy with .dun moor work on my controll box and fillmed it when its finished soon hopefully??so its comeing back as for your soldering have a go i still do misstakes
Hi Steve, hope all is well? Nothing from you in a while. Has the mojo not returned?Interested to see how Whitelegg has progressed.
Hi Mike all is well hope you are to been doing a vid 1 off 2 about fitting point indicatos to controll box when finish will start one with the other bits?? I'm helping a m8 at n gauge show all w/end so if your going will have a chat
@@stephenrsims4034 I'll be there on the Sunday. Which layout are you assisting on, I'll keep a look out?
@@VikingHuzo hi mike sorry taken so long to get back to you i will be at stand LL ZIEKIA OST it's a german layout around end off ww2 hope to see you sunday
Hi Steve, thoroughly enjoying your series of videos, especially as my layout will also be in N Gauge. Been watching tons of videos on TH-cam along with reading up on it for the past 30 years or more but just never got round to building one myself. So a lot of what you show to a degree most people are aware of but it never hurts to remind and already I have picked up a number of excellent tips from your good self. Like you I am going over to DCC and I have already decided to get the NCE control system but being a complete novice I am having problems getting my head around quite a lot of the electrical parts. Struggling regarding the circuit breakers. I understand how they work and why you need them but I get confused why you need four and why one will not suffice. I have looked at a number of diagrams but they are even more confusing and only show you in sections where they go as opposed to a diagram showing you a complete layout. I dont intend to go to technical with my layout but I do need to safeguard my trains. Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated. Regards Chris
Hi cri
Hi Chris you are right i can get away with one c/braker but i have 4 due to me running upto 6 trains 4 at the front and 2 at back so if i have a short i can find it easy think of a box with 4 sides if one side not working the other 3 sides will still work and i can find the short faster as i know what side it is hope this is ok for you if not get back to me
Thanks Steve, I am slowly getting my loft up to scratch, new insulation, floor and roof, longer floorboards and screwed down this time. Electrics and lighting completed. Need to roof lights fitted before I start building bases and laying track so a long way to go yet. Layout will be in n gauge and approx 30' x 8', so yes understand what you are on about and will be doing the same, but when I get nearer to that stage I will be in contact so you can run me through it if that's ok. Hope you get back to making videos but understand why you have not, not enough hours in the day. Regards Chris
@@Chris-BognorRegis yes thats ok all the best
If you solder both sides of the track to the copper board edging ,how do you avoid creating a short between the positive rail and the negative rail?
hi what you do is cut through the copper if you are not sure have a look at my next vid about track laying i think its about 31 mins in
excellent video
Thanks
looks good
Thanks
Good to hear from you Steve, it was me you spoke to at the SPC stand at TINGS. I've moved on slowly, all wired up and ballasted and now getting on to the scenic. Great to see you back and hope to see the progress of Whitelegg throughout the next year. Have a great Christmas.
hi Mike sorry i forgot your name hope your all ok and your layout coming a long nicely and have a great christmas
Welcome back Steven,we all lose our mo - jo now and again, just nice to see you are Ok.Have a relaxing Xmas, looking forward to seeing the progression in the new year.
hi Bob didnot think i,d lose my mojo for this long but its comeing back atlast and have a good Chirstmas
Welcome back Stephen and looking forward to your videos especially the how too ones, I hope you and yours have a great Christmas and a happy and healthy new year
Thanks looking forwards to getting back to it and enjoy your christmas
Hi when are you going to publish the next part
Hi sorry it's takeing so long but have suffered with what they call burn out with doing theses videos_going to shows & building the layout but the good news is i'm starting to get my intrest back so hopfully i'll start the 2nd part soon so i'm v/ sorry for the delay
@@stephenrsims4034 Hi so glad you are getting your mojo back your channel is the best no nonsense one
Would something like this not do the same thing ? www.floodland.nl/aim/info_module_connector_en_1.htm
That is some amount of wiring. Enjoyed this video and look forward to the next ones. Stephen
It is and thats only 1/2off it 😁
Hi Stephen. It was a pleasure to meet you are Warley. You mentioned buying these when we spoke. I have finished wiring in all my point motors and switches, but I am begining to wonder if I might return to them at some point to put the point indicators on them. I am already confusing myself with four double slips. Trains are going all over the place! Merry Christmas to you and your family and best wishes for the New Year. Stephen
A great video, some top tips !
Evening Stephen. Interesting to see how to make the legs and good news that you will be a Warely this year. I will be making the trip down for the two days and I will drop by to say hello as you suggested
hi steve nice to hear from you and look forward to seeing you at Warley
Would you use the cork on storage lines behind the backscene ?
Hi david i have put cork in the storage roads but it is up to you whether or not but if you don"t you will have a slight ramp thickness of the cork
I have to say thanks for mentioning about using the different types of glue. I know what you mean about borrowing from others to improve your own layout. No one that I have been watching has mentioned about using waterproof glue. Something that I didn't think about either. But, I can picture it down the road, when I start to ballast my track, seeing my track floating away on me! Keep up the good work!
thats ok i learned a long time ago when ballasting a layout and parts off the cork lifted and i think this is one few hobbys thats ok to pinch ideas from others i do it"s how we learn
Thanks Steve, another informative and useful pair of videos. Your loss of footage didn't affect the overall demonstration of techniques but it must have been darned annoying!. Your time spent on these is well appreciated and what I really like about your videos is you leave no stone unturned in the detail which is really useful for newcomers to the hobby Look forward to your continued videos Cheers Steve
hi thanks for your comment it was a bit annoying but thees things are sent to try us
Hi Stephen, Thanks for these excellent videos, they are full of useful tips for newcomers to N gauge like myself. I particulary liked the one in the previous video where you moved the insulating joiner away from the V to the end of the short straight section to allow an easier solder point for the V section- simple but I had not thought of it before! Cheers Steve
Hi glad it helped you out some times the simple things are over looked as long as you still isolate the V in theory the track can be as long as you want it to bel
Hi Steve, another couple of great Vids this time on platforms,
thanks for the comment i would have another one about making the legs and control panel but due to hot weather and layout is in the loft it might be a bit late thanks
Certainly helping me. Thanks for sharing.
hi David thanks for your comment this is why i enjoy doing it and helping others more films to come
is that an SB3a? I thought it was a 3 amp booster
sorry i"v not got back sooner the booster is a SB3a it is a 5amp the SB is just a old part no. I did ask a DCC dealer the SB5 is the newer one thay are both 5amp sorry it"s taken so long to get back to you
How do you avoid a dead short at the copper cross pieces?
hi Neil the way you stop shorts is to cut through the copper part only if you fast forward the film to about 30 minutes in i do show how this is done if you have not got a disc cuter you can use a sharp knife or a razor saw but make sure that you make the cuts wide enough if not in the summer the gap could close do to expansion
Hi steve were did ya get the fuse breakers from m8 and how much was they!
Hi the EB1 circuit breaker from NCE you can get from any DCC supplies like DIGITRAINS - DCC SUPPLIES there about £25 +post or from shows that as a DCC trader hope this is ok
Hi Steve Your Vids are great mate, I'm just starting at the age of 69, I'm enjoying watching and learning, Thanks a lot and please keep them coming mate, cheers. Reg
Hi Reg thanks for your comment i am in the middle off filming a new part . this one is how i do my platforms which will be about 2 weeks time glad you are enjoying the films Steve
I will b e building my own layout with DCC never done it before always had DC. Its mind blowing and being paraplegic its going too be hard enough so when we move I will be starting from scratch and I have watch quite a few you tubers but I'm trying to find one that's easy to understand and yous is the one so far I am building it in 00 gauge will that matter if its not n gauge and I'm no good at electrics and never put decoders in locos so I have got a lot to learn so thank you Stephen for your helpful videos I shall keep watching then and if I have to watch them over and over again I will do till I get it right thanks .........Chris
i Chris thanks for your comment if you can wire dc you can do dcc wiring oo is the same as n but for the bus bar i would use 32/02 or bit bigger if your going to have sound/points in dcc hope this is helpfull if not get back to me
I will do thanks Stephen and I will keep watching mate :0)
Hi Steve, Thanks for sharing your videos - perfect timing for me as I'm about to start the n guage journey very soon. A simple question for you re glueing the track down . If you need to lift the track how do you do it ? Hot water ? I hated pinning my old 00 gauge and I think n gauge pinning, for me, is a non starter. Thanks again . Alan
Hi there sorry for the delay if you use a water based pva glue to lay your track down you can lift it out by getting a spray bottle with warm water with couple drops of washing up liquid spray it over track let water soak in this will brake the glue down and you can work the track loose then lift it out it might take some time but it will lift up hope this is ok for you and welcome to the n"gauge family
Thanks for your reply Steve. Much appreciated.
hex frog juicer marvellous piece of kit I used one on a scissors cross over. works perfect and saved a lot of wiring.
hi paul they are a good bit of kit i"v fitted one on a live X"ing as well and works great no switches no probs
very informative and entertaining ... though it would have been helpful to newcomers to show how you cut the seep wire rod so it doesn't foul stock passing over the point
hi Zeb thanks for your comment i did forgot to put the clips in but i have now rectified this now by making a short film with the missing clips thanks again for your comment
Just watched the two wiring videos. I'm just at that stage with my layout and your videos were very helpful. Always better to see it done than to read about it. So thanks for that. I'm looking forward to catching up with your earlier videos.
Thanks steve glad to know its helping you part 3 cab bus control and point motor fitting will be 2-3 weeks time
Hi Steve, very helpful. Have you an update on how things are in your loft with regards to cold and heat? I potentially could put my layout there - it wouldn't be an exhibition layout, so won't need for all of your tips, but more just about space and heat and cold if using a loft. Looking forward to an update Many Thanks
hi Tod thanks for your comment about the loft .I am lucky in that from floor to top of roof is about 11ft so i put a lower ceiling to about 7' 6 and put some insulation so most of the heat is trapped in there but it still gets hot and cold in the loft .I use a 12'' fan in the summer and 2 halogen heaters that move side to side .In the winter i put them under the layout .So the heat rise up to the boards and spreads keeping your legs warm make shore theirs a safe gap between heater and boards TRY NOT TO USE A GAS HEATER DO TO THE FUMES hope this is what you wanted if not get back to me all the best
Cheers Steve.
Nice video
Thanks glad you liked it this is pt2 off 3 in this group
Stephen I work in OO and use Kadee magnetic couplers. Like you I use two magnets beneath the track. They are 20 x 5 x 1.5mm. I use double sided selotape to stick them & separating plastic strips to 1mm card. This means that the tops are level with my cork track bed. Generally everything works well. However, there are two problems. 1. The strength of the magnets can 'drag' an uncoupled wagon forward. 2. When moving forward at a pro-typical slow shunting speed the tension on the couplers is often not enough to prevent unwanted uncoupling. In OO the solution to both problems seems to be adding rolling resistance to the wagons. I have seen this done with a little soft foam between the axle and body or, better still, a small piece of square section styrene glued to the underside of the body and resting on the axle. I am not sure how this would work in N, it might be worth a play. Off topic - I am helping get the LMRG N gauge layout looking a little spruced up for the open gardens weekend. Did you provide the arched stone retaining wall at one end. I need to source some more to carry it further round the scenic area. Can you tell me what the source was? Also the model number - stone type or whatever I need to order some. meltonpieman
Thanks for the upload! #AddItHere
that.s ok sorry it,s taken so long to do
Steve How about a bit of video showing your fiddle yard on Loughborough Derby Road? Are you using cassettes, a turntable or just holding sidings then switching loco positions? David
+Melton Pieman hi i use the cassette system made off 9 mi plywood cut in to 1inch strips to the length you need then made in to a u shape
