Hartlepool Monkey Hanging Legend
มุมมอง 64K15 ปีที่แล้ว
The monkey-hanging legend is the most famous story connected with Hartlepool. During the Napoleonic Wars a French ship was wrecked off the Hartlepool coast. See www.thisishartlepool.co.uk/history/thehartlepoolmonkey.asp for the lyrics and more information!
I was born in the Bonny City of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1950.My parents, would off loved to see these old photographs.I am proud to be a Geordie. Howay my Lads and Lasses.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.
Newcastle was a beautiful city They should have left it old Fabulous postcards
Wow great I watch this stuff 24/7 thanks so much.
Replies PLEASE get your FACTS RIGHT. As it was NOT the fishermen of HARTLEPOOL that hung the MONKEY. As I get so SICK of people that know NOTHING, as they say “how stupid are the folks of Hartlepool hang a monkey". But the TRUTH is that it was a STOCKTON (Stockton-on-Tees) Judge and Jury. that found the monkey GUILTY. It also was NOT hung in Hartlepool, but it was hung in the town of Stockton (Stockton-on-Tees) So who are the ones that are STUPID, the folk of Hartlepool in THINKING that a monkey was a French spy. Or was it the Judge and Jury of STOCKTON (Stockton-on-Tees) who had been more educated than the fishermen of Hartlepool ?????????? But a LOT of the videos about the Hartlepool monkey, are NOT made by anyone that are from HARTLEPOOL. Just to let you know, I am 100% Hartlepudlian
It would have been helpful to say where the pics were taken

Brilliant cheers 👍🇬🇧
In fairness it was probably a 'powder monkey' (young kids that fetch the gunpowder for the gunners, as opposided to an actual monkey) but it's a fun legend
I'm a pooley - very proud of this legend - and "ower" relationship to Andy Capp!
Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing.........

Lovely collection, thank you.
Great work. I have not seen photos of Newcastle that go back so far. What lovely historic buildings and nice clean spacious streets. I particularly liked the photo of the big ships going up and down the Quayside.
This has even been a study of this at Aberdeen University as the story actually has its origins with a place called Boddam in Peterhead following the shipwreck of a ship called Annie in 1772 and came to Hartlepool in 1854 via a song called The Boddamers hung the Monkey-O which was adapted by music hall entertainer Ned Corvan to fit in with Hartlepool (called it the Hartlepool Monkey)
just love the old photos, I was born during the war, and left in 1968
I love these old photos and think about my family who lived there...during those times
Was amazed to hear myself singing on this, I recorded it about 30 years ago into a mic connected to an early computer. it was done for George who had a bulletin board for Hartlepudlians in Canada. before the internet? it was downloaded a lot from around the world. Not sure who wrote it some said Vin Garbut but not sure. first heard it in Whyalla South Australia 1982 by an Aussie bush band..
Hi Bill - I've been trying to find out who recorded this for the last 15 years or so. It originally came from George back in 1999 maybe? and I converted it to a TH-cam video. If you want to email me: info@thisishartlepool.co.uk I would like to hear a bit more about it. Thanks
Bill Reed I had been trying to find this song for ages and this is a wonderful version ,thanks.

Yeah right.
Only made one visit to Hartlepool I don't know what it used to be like but found it now to be totally dominated by roads and cars. Have never had to wait so long to cross the roads even in central London, such a shame.
Does anybody know the chords for this song? I was asked to play it at a gig recently. thanks.
The BNP went too far this time!

I always wanted to walk into a pub in Hartlepool and shout "Ooh Hung the Monkey!" and then make a run for it lol
We’d reply “we did and there’s plenty of rope left” No one takes offence in town about it ever
