"The Trail" - A short film by Glenn Lawrentz
I'm excited for your series. I'm in Chicago and would love to do this trail. I did Centennial Trail in South Dakota a couple of years ago. A little off-topic, but can you tell me how much of the trail is road walking?
I wanna say 40 miles or so (give or take), thats a rough estimate. The trail guide would have all the information you need on this trail, including how much of it is road walking. www.rivertorivertrail.net thanks for watching. Im excited as well. Ive been hooked on this trail and I cant wait to finally complete it solo
@@savagetraveler Thanks. That's helpful! I drove 12 hours each way--twice!--to hike South Dakota's trail. I guess I have to hike ours!
Congratulations!! So happy for you and the family! Happy New Year!!
@@tridudyonthetrail thank you!! Happy New Year to you as well. Many blessings to you and yours this year and every one that follows 🙏
Congrats on knocking this out, and good luck on your plans to solo thru hike it next Fall. You should post your gear list (lighterpack or packwizard). I'll be solo thru hiking the R2R in late Feb!
@@TheDLiT absolutely! Thanks and many blessings to you and your adventure in February. I do plan to share a gear list video with my lighterpack link, just hashing out some details with my cold soak meals
The chickens had me cracking up! lol! Seriously though, I've been really looking closely at the DJI Neo as well... Looks like a really solid little drone! I may take the plunge after seeing that you did already. As far as cold soaking, I may have to try it sometime. Maybe once it warms up a bit! Looking forward to more of your adventures!
@@tridudyonthetrail haha! Yea they're funny girls. The DJI Neo is awesome and can do so much. Only downside is the battery life is only good for 18 minutes of continuous operation. But if you buy the three battery combo with the fast charger, its really worth it. The fast charger charges all three batteries simultaneously to full charge in 1 hour. And considering what the Drone can actually do considering its size and weight it really is awesome! I'll shoot some more stuff with the Drone before my thru-hike.
great video man, thanks for help.
@@epureanucatalin1356 Glad I could help! Did u have this issue with your pot? Have you tried it the removal process? Its amazing right!? I've used my pot several times since this! Absolutely genius hack!
Very nice! I’m with ya, cheap and light. Good recommendations! By golly, I’m going to have to hike this trail one day! Thanks for sharing!

I myself love hammock camping, but I am not a through hiker, I just really enjoy camping with minimal gear (hammock or bedroll and tarp) the set up I use is a DD camping hammock, which has a second layer for adding a sleeping pad and I have only ever used the klymit static v and haven't been disappointed, and for an under quilt I use a swagman roll poncho liner by Helicon-tex. And lastly inside the hammock with me I've got a twin sized wool blanket and the klymit luxe pillow. The whole set up keeps my warm into the low high 20s low 30s
@@TylerScar-bushcraft thank you for sharing your setup!
I did that trail a few years ago. It’s a good one.
@@AshleyPearce-h4x i wish I had a time to check out the lookout tower. Just means I gotta go back.
What a perfect getaway!! Who knew central Illinois has those big hill?! What the heck?! I’ve heard of the Frito hack but that’s the first time I’ve seen it! lol! Super cool! Glad you both had a great trip! Thanks for sharing!
@@tridudyonthetrail thanks for watching Mark! Always appreciate your support! I've never known about the Frito hack. Glad to know of it now! Yea East central and Southern Illinois have some decent hills.
I use a 30° nylon Hammock Gear down underquilt. It's a 12 ounces and fits in a 1 quart ziplock bag. That wise owl under quilt is not polyester and uses polyfill so it weighs twice as much and uses 5 times as much space in your bag.
This is awesome!! Looking forward to the upcoming videos for when I attempt it one day! Happy trails, my friend!
@@tridudyonthetrail thanks! I absolutely love this trail! A solo thru-hike of this trail and I can officially scratch it off my list. I highly recommend this trail!! Even if you only do sections, its a beautiful trail!

Thank you so much for your support Mark! I truly appreciate it! 🙏
I know im late to the show, but what were the dates you decided to do this trail? I'm looking to do it this fall for 2024!
@@midwayxray I had gone mid October starting around the 15th. Just be mindful of weather patterns in the Shawnee and keep your eye on temps weeks in advance. Cold fronts are guaranteed to ruin your thru-hike if your not properly prepared for below freezing temps. Otherwise, if your able to plan your thru-hike around the temp changes, you CAN have an amazing fall hike experience! I look forward to seeing your adventure!
@savagetraveler thank you so much for the reply!! I was planning early October but man I would love to see those tree colors, I may have to take couple week delay weather permitting!

How did you make your daily maps?
@@MurvFisher-gs2ui i printed the maps from the trail guide into a smaller size. I think 3x5, so as many as 3 to 4 maps per page. Then I cut them out, put cardboard in between and poor man laminated two maps together so that they'd be double sided and correspond from one map to the next. I still have the original maps I made, I'd be willing to send them to ya. By the time I'm able to get back out on the R2R for my solo thru-hike it may be another year or two
@@MurvFisher-gs2ui i never really used the maps anyway, I relied on the Avenza map app on my phone which was very accurate, always showed where I was on the map and never failed me
Great video's Thanks for sharing and congrats. on your completion. Of R2R trail
@@mikecrook8650 thank you so much! I hope to return someday to complete my solo east to west thru-hike.
Thanks for the video. You had a drone for those last shots of Inspiration Point? Those shots were nice
I had found footage of Inspiration Point that I utilized in my video. I'd love to get a drone tho! Spendy little gadgets
Ive been bingeing your videos. Im in Illinois as well. I used to live near Waterfall Glenn but now i love in Plano Illinois. So im still only 50ish minutes away and about the same away from Starved Rock. Id be down to do some hikes/thru hikes with you if you wanted company.
Appreciate it!! Thank you for watching my channel! I love Waterfall Glen. I'll keep you posted if I have any future planned hikes.
I loved this
Thank you! ❤
Attempting in two days
Enjoy! I thought it was an amazing backpacking adventure!
I LOVE Giant City state Park! Have stayed there twice - not enough!
I didn't have a chance to really explore that area and when I came through it was rather quick in the early morning. But the lodge restaurant was definitely worth the stop. Delicious food and fuel for the hike.
@@savagetraveler GREAT breakfasts. Too bad you weren't able to stay for a fried chicken dinner. A gone-to-heaven experience.
@@dianefreeman7194 I've wanted to try their fried chicken dinner so badly, the three times I've come to this trail I've missed it... perhaps whenever I return I can plan it right to where I make it to one
@savagetraveler I live at the very top of Illinois, so driving 7-8 hours for a meal is too much. But the Giant City Lodge has better food than 90% of restaurants I ate at during my travels. Best biscuits and gravy, beating most southern places. Now I have made myself hungry!
@@dianefreeman7194 🤣 i totally understand. I live near Chicago. Is definitely a drive, but when I have plans to make it down there its definitely a must stop and yes their Biscuits and gravy are delicious! Along with there chicken fried steak and I think one year I had a prime rib sandwich that was out of this world. Darn. I'm hungry now too 😆
Congratulations!!! Very happy for you and your family!! Wishing you all the best!!
Thank you so much Mark!!! Most appreciate it! Looking forward to more of your hiking trips!

The Shawnee national Forest is my backyard the river to river trail has always been a dream on mine. I need to get lost in the woods, and find my heart and soul again. I need to start working towards this.
I would like to say that it is more than worth the experience. I live hundreds of miles away. It takes me the better part of half a day to get there. But the feeling and experience I receive on the trail brings me back every single year. I'm addicted to this trail!
@@savagetraveler I've done segments of it from time to time mainly just day trips life is just so busy it's hard to squeeze that much free time to do the whole thing at once. I live about 3 or 4 miles north of giant city state park. I really enjoyed your series on this hike gave me motivation to try just a little harder.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have another series from the year prior where I had a failed attempt. I'm hoping to return this Fall to reattempt my solo westbound thru-hike of the River to river

Great trail! I think I completed it the day after you guys started. That's funny. What is funnier is that is my white van parked in the Crooked Creek parking lot with all the stickers at the start of the video. Lol. Weird to see it on here.
We admired all the stickers on your van! You hike or visit all those places?
Yes. We've collected the stickers from road trips throughout the years. Mostly with our kids when they were younger. A good way to decorate up the otherwise church bus!
