I like having a large amount of surface area covered by that first patch. I’ve seen a lot of professionals do it that way. Conversely, some, concerned that there could be failure, prefer starting smaller and working up to largest so that each patch has a bond to the hull. Sorry for such a long response. And for full disclosure, on the inside of each thru-hull repair, I glassed small to large.

I’ll have to watch back, but all repairs used 1708 biaxial fiberglass cloth. This included glassing on the inside of each outer repairs as well. Thanks for watching.

Correct! The scupper drains from the cockpit do not need 2 1/2" seacock drains. Rerouting them above the waterline has worked exceptionally well so far. Deleting two thru-hulls is an improvement.

It's no brand-new Hallberg-Rassy, but you are right - it will look so nice once it is completed. Especially the cap rail along the high bulwarks and the wood of the bowsprit.

I am going to make sure my forward bulkhead is a true “collision bulkhead” before I send the boat back to the Atlantic. I’ll reinforce and make sure it’s a watertight bulkhead.

I’m looking forward to a better electrical setup too. Everything works, but it’s a mess overall. Questionable in some areas. It’ll be well worth the advice.

I’ve had more time and the current setup will be basically Garmin inReach, navionics, and existing nav/tech gear that cam with the boat.

Great question. I repeated the process of revealing new glass and tapering the site before building it back up with layers. It wasn’t as expansive as the outer hull repair. It’s a thicker boat than most, and the thickened epoxy plugged well.

Great tip. I don’t have one, but I’ve had to thoroughly inspect the diesel tank out of similar concerns. Could not risk it. All clear.

It found a good home in another sailboat.

Sure can’t. It’s upgraded with an 120 amp alternator and as a 38, a little more power than other options that go into a Westsail 32.

With the bottom repaired and painted, the engine ready for final installation, I’m feeling a lot closer to the end of the refit. All the remaining jobs won’t have me crouched in an engine bay.

@@Even_Keeled If you want to know about crouched, wait until you do the electrics! The engine bay is your starter course! 😅 Big alternator was a very good choice.

That's good to hear. These older boats have so many more thru-hulls than necessary. I closed two more recently. The intake for the galley sink. I am running it from one of the freshwater tanks. The sink drain will feed to the gray water tank off of the head. Two holes eliminated with these changes.

@@Even_Keeled You're doing a gray water tank in a boat that size? I'm surprised you have room. Or do you mean the black tank? My boat has even more ridiculous thru hulls, like the macerator discharge for the black tank, which is below the waterline. It's so hard to tell when it's done pumping, and is just an unnecessary leak risk in my opinion

Great question. I spoke with Beta Marine techs at the Annapolis Boat Show about my engine install and they had no issue with the aluminum plates. They are 3” X 28” aluminum long plates.

@@tomlix Yes, ½” . With a 45 bevel to fit the Westsail's engine pan, but it could be completely different for the Frances. Plus, some notch the aft, inner corners of the plates to allow the engine and accompanying cables, hoses, etc. to fit easier. That all sounds like an exciting restoration. The best of luck!

The truth. Still a good journey. Often nice to get lost in boat work after being focused in other areas, like the farm.

You and me both! As it gets cold, it’ll be nice to redirect efforts to the engine room and getting the Beta 38 fully installed.

Thanks. Boat is on a farm off the coast. Once the refit is done, then it’ll be a whole search for where to dock it.

Three gallons of primer and three gallons of antifoul. Six total; a gallon a coat for this 32'. Most use the formula of calculating the approximate surface area of the hull below the waterline, in square feet: multiply boat length X beam X 0.85. Typically, 500 sq. ft. per gallon. I plan to use an outdrive antifouling paint for any underwater metals.

@@captaindrew3061 After each coat, there was just enough left in the bucket to go around with a brush for hard-to-reach spots. Used TotalBoat Spartan (blue, then black) for antifoul.

That was an option, but sodablasting was a recommendation from one of the original managers of the Westsail yard since it is such a thick hull and any damage is close to the surface. But a gelplaner has worked well on other boats and you're right, these older boats are layed up thickly and priming and painting seal them up correctly.

Yes, it is exactly how to get away. I will try to do a day sail and plan to video some of the adventure. Not sure I’ll ever get the chance again to sail in the Sea of Japan.

I paused between these coats and the next to do a lot of what you mentioned. The hull wasn't smooth enough; more sanding and fairing; I needed to take out another thru-hull and repair it, and more. The videos will catch up to the projects. Thanks for the suggestion.

@@Westsail A popular change is removing the thru-hulls for the scupper drains. That gets rid of the largest two holes in the boat. While I have my video for that, I can email the pictures and directions from another Westsail owner. The other change is doing away with the intake and output for the head. I’m keeping with the traditional Jabsco, but composting is an option. Finally, a lot of new yachts are running the sink from the fresh water tank. That could eliminate the salt water intake for that. This, I might actually do. One less hole in the boat.

I wanted everything brand new on the bottom. The soda blasting was worth every penny to get a decade + of ablative paint off. The red you see in older videos after I sodablasted, is the red gelcoat that was applied to the mold after the white finish gelcoat was applied to the mold. This dark color was applied so any air entrapped in the fabric and resin layers could be seen and squeegeed out. New thru-hulls were a must for me too. All manageable projects. Stands are pricey. 7 Brownell boat stands, 3 chains, and 6 keel blocks totaled $1994.80. You can find them used. I’ll sale mine once I’m done.

Yes, at last! Videos lag the progress. I’m excited to move below deck to start on the interior projects. Just a few, but time consuming. Plan is to then finish with the work topside and then she’ll be ready - or close to ready. There will always be something to do.

Routed in the engine bay on my Westsail was a pump for a cockpit shower. I have also seen a setup with a shower grate in between the saloon and v-berth, with cabin doors closed, which drains to bilge. Nothing else is mentioned about showers aboard per westsail.com/servman2.htm

I was regular crew before Hurricane Isaias in 2020. The boat looked good despite the marina taking a direct hit. Now I own it and will complete a full refit.

Intro is only :27. It's typical. Yeah, I cut out a lot of those farm shots in future videos. Everyone gets it. Countryside. But, this video was to have more of a visual record of all of the hoses for labeling, so I spliced it in. And the clips of buckets of oil/diesel/water were a mere 30 seconds. These videos serve as snapshots of the entire process as I appreciate each stage of it all. Currently, both bilge and engine room are spotless and repainted. All looks great. But you probably won't make it that far in the videos. Or, skip ahead.

I'm ready for the ring toss at the county fair.
