Good information. How to calculate the labour hours for different types of steel structure. I mean light, medium, heavy and extra heavy steels. It is easy to take material take off. I am always doing mistakes on considering labour hours, it significantly affect the project. Kindly explain how to consider the labour hours accurately.
Great video clear and concise
Great content, thanks
I'm pretty sure this guy is out of business at this point. I called and emailed and called to no avail. Its too bad; the industry needs guys like him.
What about cleats and plates?
Hi sir. It's very impressive for me to listen all your videos regarding steel structure. But most of the things i didn't get from these videos. If you don't mind can i get your email address or any other source that can help me to approach you I have drawings and i want to send you these videos for getting detailed video to your side.
Is there any software for android?
Great vid! Thank you!
Tremendo!!!
This was a great video. I am creating a toolset just like the one you created. Would there be anyway to get the .btx from you?
This was great!
Amazing content. Do you have a template of the excel sheets for download?
Take one project and do estimation......not understand.......
GOOD EXPLANATION AND INFORMATIVE TIPS. YOU HAVE PLACED IN GREAT EFFORTS FOR THIS PRESENTATION. BEST WISHES.
Thank you for the video, I noticed you use Bluebeam Revu, can I use Planswift or Autodesk Revit for this process?
This is very cool. I guess you sort of defined part of my job title. I am probably what you would call a purchasing agent training to be an estimator with a drafting and design plus a CULINARY background. Misen Plas is something I understand all to well. Mess in place or get your crap together. I am sure I will be checking out more of your videos. I am six weeks into the job. Thanks!!!
How to find the weight of structure roughly from the area of warehouse?
Education and evangelizing, I love it!
Wow you content is amazing brother !!
Thank you, @McMaster Iron Co.! We're glad you enjoyed the video. Please let us know if we can ever help you in any other way. We appreciate your viewership and support.
Hello thank you for this. I'm a new estimator in a company and what we do is get the total weight of the structure and use it to price the material, fabrication, HDG and paint. the installation is base of total area of the site of the project. and I'm not sure if this is effective in a long run but we are getting project doing this. sorry for my bad engrish.
I've heard of that, but never done it. So you get tonnage and multiply times what? Does the number you multiply that tonnage change from project to project? Thank you.
@@aest1524 -For material, multiplied by cost of material per weight. -Fabrication, I dont know where they get the value, maybe from their experience because as of still now i dont know how they price fabrication. I know there are lots of factors in costing fabrication but here in our company they dont share how they change it depending of what project we cost and ofcoure our production manager is sucks at monitoring projects and no documentation. -Painting, paint material will base on surface area, and for labour it will depends on the material needed to paint. Small and mobile project cost less in labors paint. Big and heavy alot of work to be done before painting will cost high ofcourse. -HDG, we just multiply it by cost per weight. compny doing HDG, price us base on weight. -transport, that will depends on how the material will be care of and the location. -Installation. this one i have less knowledge as i dont have much experience and not doing site job so I cant estimate how many person will be involved and ofcoure our production manager dont have documentation for this. if only he had this info, maybe I can. -Design, this one is covered in Overhead. some instanced we made separate price if the design if complicated.
Excellent Presentation! RJ you know this material, blindfolded...
All that CJP field welding gets pricey! I enjoyed this 2nd in the series presentation.
Thank you, @Sunyrayman123 I appreciate your support! Please let me know if I can help you in any way. info@steelpcgroup.com
Superb presentation! I am hanging on your every word. Ok, RJ, What version and rev. of Blue Beam are you using and what version of Excel for the data export? (Can you imagine the Scope of Rev. 21:18?)
@Sunyrayman123 thank you for watching and your kind words! I am currently using the latest edition of Bluebeam (20.2.60). That may not have been the exact edition at the time of recording this video, but all the same features shown in the video are still available. The Excel version used is from the MS Office suite 2019. The exported CSV (Comma Separated Values) file format works on any Excel version, the formulae and the macros that I have developed will not however (but that's a whole other subject). Feel free to shoot me an email if you should have any other questions! Thank you for your support info@steelpcgroup.com
@@spcgroup1076 Thank you. I suspect I will contact you after I see more of your videos...For pertinent questions..
Why create separate files? Would'nt it be more efficient to use bookmarks and bookmark headings?
@Max Versluis that is an excellent suggestion! I would have to agree; bookmarking the different plan sets would also be a great way to quickly separate them without segregating the Construction Documents.
Hi i am trying to learn how to make accurate estimates on steel jobs i am curious how do you tell if you are responsible for the material and fabrication or only for the Erection process?
@Dylen Hesseling, thank you for reaching out. Typically an RFQ (Request for Quote) or RFP (Request For Proposal) will specify the SOW (Scope Of Work) being requested that you bid. If ever in doubt, contact your client to discuss what their needs and expectations are. If you're bidding to multiple clients pursuing the same project, you may need to have this conversation with each one, so that "scope gaps" aren't later identified in a buyout meeting, or having your bid rejected/disqualified. If you're bidding either just the fabrication or just the install and you're trying to determine who's responsible for supplying what, I'd refer you to AISC 303 - Code of Standard Practice; specifically Section 7. ERECTION, Subsections 7.8 Field Connection Material and 7.10 Temporary Support of Structural Steel Frames which have a lot to say about this matter. If you ever have any questions or are looking for some help, please let us know by emailing info@steelpcgroup.com

Great Video
Hi, I have a doubt, I have found how to takeoff steel connections, but unfortunately I haven´t found a software to do that. By the way, I'm from Mexico, I always receive plans and the percent of misc is really diferent on every project.
There are several options for takeoffs, and they're not all created equal. Especially with the different designs that you can see from all different regions, you need a system that allows you to be flexible yet accurate on each project. Bluebeam takeoffs, I believe, is the best platform for that. It's simply the digital version of paper takeoffs, and the information or metrics you gather from it can be more easily tailored to the project and/or your company's standards.
Let us know if you have any questions - we want them all! We're here to help you, that's our only goal with what we do!

Your videos are very helpful. Finally, someone online that is willing to teach this industry. I'm currently a steel detailer that is planning on going on my own as a subcontractor. Could you give some guidance on what a fabricator looks into when finding a detailer-the paperwork involved, insurances, the bidding between the detailer and fabricator, etc. I consider myself an excellent detailer. However, I lack knowledge on the business end on how to close a deal with a fabricator. If you have something like this on TH-cam or your site, I would gladly sign up as a member.
@elchayan93 Thank you for the feedback, our only aim here is to help! Absolutely, as a Project and Executive Manager I can certainly tell you what mattered to me and what we received from Detailers. I'll start with the easiest - insurance. Professional Liability Insurance (formerly called Errors and Omissions) is truly the only insurance coverage that will matter to your customers. In the event that a detailing mistake causes a costly mishap on the project, your customers will be looking to you to pay or make up for it; sometimes this can be very expensive. There's an imbalance between the cost of detailing services and the value or potential impact on the job (i.e. your contract might be for $10,000, but a single mistake might cost $100,000). Professional Liability Insurance will cover the costs for your mistakes. Conveniently, E&O is a "claims based" insurance policy, meaning that you'll be covered so long as you have a policy (including costs for mistakes made prior to having your insurance policy - sweet!). Next is the paperwork process, which is fairly simple. The actual job process will be 1) submittal [for review] 3) approved drawings [shop and field] 4) change[s] orders. Each of these processes are typically billed separately, thus giving you your billing schedule. I will note that schedule is typical, but some do it differently. Another "typical" example is that submittal invoices are usually around 20%-30% of contract value and the approved drawing package makes the rest (change orders are billed specific to each). DON'T FORGET RETENTION (usually 10%)!!! Your quotes and contracts should state what your hourly billing rate will be for re-work and change orders as well. As for bidding, as with all contracting, it's typically "a whore's market" meaning that the cheapest wins the day. Overtime customers will come to value quality, and may work with you exclusively because you actually save them money by reducing errors, but getting your foot in that door can be hard and certainly takes time. I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, please let me know. Feel free to email me at info@steelpcgroup.com also MEMBERSHIP IS FREE, so don't be shy to join ;)

I think ; could be a good Idea ; IF you can explain. from the scracht for Instance, when you do not have a print copy . doing it by computer, you should have the proper tools, ether way by hand or a software, that allows you, to mark up any thing you should mark or use a MS. Cause the mark up will allow you no to reaccount the elemnts..
We've been getting a lot of requests to show the Bluebeam profile development. We're definitely working on bringing that to you!
What Bluebeam tool set were you using to do your takeoff?
Seth, excellent question; thank you! I've actually created my own custom tool set which contains (almost) all of the available steel shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, Bluebeam does not yet provide a tool set with this information, so I had to develop it myself.
@@spcgroup1076 I would be very interested in seeing a short video on how you made that tool set. Currently, I have been using Bluebeam just for highlights and inputting my takeoff directly into Tekla EPM. However, our estimating department is looking to see if we can use Bluebeam to do our takeoffs and import the Bluebeam excel table into Tekla EPM where we can make our final tweaks. Learning how to make a toolset like yours would be a great first step.
@@TheNoob2Tube I'd be glad to help you out! I was planning on doing an entire training block on Bluebeam for the month of October, but I won't make you wait that long ;) Send me an email at rjangle@steelpcgroup.com to discuss this further. The Bluebeam profile which I've created (and the toolsets included) were specifically designed to work with Fabsuite (now a part of Tekla Powerfab) and produce a CSV which can be directly imported in. I think I could be of great help to you and your company's estimating department.
@@spcgroup1076 is there a way i can buy the tool set from you?
