Hancock and Brown
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 16 ต.ค. 2011
This is a channel developed by George Hancock, aimed at helping public and engineers along the way.
I come from a family of heating engineers, so all most things have been covered by us over the years.
Our family run buisness has been running since 1979..so we have been around a long time. Why not pick up any hints from the videos.cheers guys and gals for watching. for further job photos, why not check out our website www.hancock-brown.co.uk

Air in Heating System, Common Fault
Air in system, this may help or simply provide an explanation to a customer who has incorrect pipe work. Maybe you could use it to point out the benefits of a sealed system or maybe you just like to see plumbing from another heating engineer’s view, anyway enjoy… maybe even give us a thumbs up. Thanks for watching!

This video is to help new installers and apprentice’s. It’s our findings that the modern colleges sometimes have their hands tied by modern curriculum, leaving gaps in real life gas work. Hopefully youtube can help bridge gaps.. this is a bit long winded but should help you know what you’re up against.

Is this what a decent gas engineer looks like 5 star service
British Gas and homeserve do minimal in and out in 10 minutes and the worst thing they charge £110
I think there is a lot of pressure on there workers to get around a lot of jobs. Thanks for the feedback 👍🏻
Thanks, seemed to have worked ok
Great News
Thank you so much all the other videos had keys or taps! Mine had neither and I was starting to panic!
@@sarahatkinson5619 no worries glad to help
Thanks, was able to top up my boiler in real time.
👍🏻
Done nothing on mine..any ideas please ?
Power the boiler off and on from the switch, the diverter may be sat wrong..if this doesn’t help you may need a new filling link.. if you already have pressure in the boiler and it’s just you live in a low pressure area so you haven’t the pressure in the mains to get to 1 bar then turn another cold tap on and off fast. The sudden stop of water causes a spike in pressure.. hope this makes sense
I have no key and there is no white tap. Help
There may be a braided silver hose style filling loop somewhere on the system… near the gauge usually
When i tried to do this, water came out from the right end??? Why is that?
Keys not fully located, put some washing up liquid on the rubbers and try again… make sure the key lines up before pushing up
@GHancock thank you so much for your response ❤️
Is there anyway you can definitively test for this back pressure? I have an unvented hw cylinder and 8bar mains cold. The hw cylinder drips after the water heater has been on until hw is drawn off. But also the tundish drips after around 4 hours of no water usage. Combi valve, t&p valve and expansion vessel all replaced, no difference.
You cold put a lever valve on the outlet, top of cylinder and see it you get back feed, but you can also see if it's pipes in wrong… you could install a reducing valve on the mains incoming to the house before any tees see if that stops it
Seems so inefficient to heat one body of water for it to heat another. Also, do you ever get pin holes an fresh an heating water mixing on the secondary plate?
Yes,pin holes although rare, can happen, the pressure in your heating water will go up even without heating and the filling loop disconnected. there are boilers without secondary heat exchanger ie intergas, but in hard water areas you can not simply change the heat exchanger if scaled up. Thanks for watching
Lifesaver thank you
just had ovo service boiler all he did WAS A FGA AND LEFT
Should clean the trap, and set co2 minimum.. but every 5 years make sure you get a full strip down.. but expect to pay more. If it’s left to long the baffle will not come out or burner gasket will fail.
Thank you..I now under Stand..I thought the air went into the bladder, not the metal vessel
How do I just set it to boost
Just turn the dial up and it will override until it's next change time… no 1hr button on it
Good video, but how do i add more water please ? My pressure went very low so i re pressured it but now its going right over to the red area. Can you advise please? Cheers Gary 👍
If it shot up to fast.. or shoots up when it heats. The pressure vessel may be gone. If simply you left it open to long then try venting the radiators to bring down the pressure would be the first move
You shouldn’t add more water if it’s going into the red…if you’ve overdone it then you can let pressure out via a pine in a radiator.. if it starts off at 1 bar and hits 3 bar when heated, then the vessels gone and it’s time to bring in a heating engineer
We all like todo things roperly but when you tell them what a full strip down costs they go else were. On a cd you have a £100 on parts so its a £200 job
You’d only have to do this every 5 years…so it’s not to bad to sell..beats them having a new heat exchanger
@@GHancock yes that is correct I normally do it every 4 years
Very useful! Do you rate these boilers over Baxi heat only?
I do, but the Baxi is a great boiler and a solution for an application where a pump overrun is not possible
Perfect, dead easy. Thanks
Great video thanks for posting , learning a lot
Great video thanks for sharing Would an option be to fit a separate 3 bar pressure reducing valve to serve the whole house after the Megaflow cold block valve? As a side not would a 22mm non return valve fitted on the hot out at the top of the cylinder stop back pressure problems? Cheers
Yep, a pressure reducing valve on the mains is often the solution, it’s not perfect because when using cold water you are robbing pressure from the 3bar rather than the higher pressure but it is often the solution
How do you sit on a check valve on the HW outlet to eliminate back pressure? There appears to be two schools of thought on it
Doesn’t hurt, it’s no more dangerous than turning off a tap, it will put a little strain on shower/tap component as the pipe work cools down it may cause a vacuum..but you still need the pressure reducing valve or the higher pressure can cause issues in mixing as the cold dominates
Really well done. Thanks.
suggestion, lose the irritating background music when you are talking. 1:05 - so loud haahha oh dear, another good video ruined by inane music.
Noted..👍🏻
Yes not the most straight forward timer setting device. Could I ask what the difference is between the auto and the slot below the full thermometer slot pls ,? Is ‘auto’ mainly for a timer program ?
Auto will vary to the Times you set… the full thermometer will hold at you're set on/high temperature permanent
one of the worst designed heat exchangers ever. will never beat the baxi boilers.2.5 mins and your into the chamber.these boilers are difficult, take ages and are maid of ali. salts up all the time. ive no idea why people thing these are the best boilers.
Mainly the CDI and He that built there reputation, but I have a lot of these ticking over at 16plus years without to much trouble, plus Worcester was the first to make a down loading burner whilst all the others messed around with condensing exchanger added to up existing design, I like Baxi too..but I can pick fault with every manufacturer.. so after service becomes the key as well as good manufacturing. Every Engineer has to push the product he believes in.
Very helpful drawing illustration
Thank you so much! Got my heat back and saved my going for a plumber or even a needless boiler key I thought I needed!!
Glad to help 👍🏻
Should we turn off boiler before doing this ?
Best to have the heating off, as the system should be cold for accurate reading.. you won’t need to turn the mains off, just the demand
@@GHancock thanks for getting back really appreciate it
Why water coming out vhen i turning anti clockwise
Keys not fully located
great video and would agree with all the other comments. however, be honest, how long did that take?
Allow yourself a 3hr time slot just incase, you can strip them down in half hour when things go smoothly.. but sometimes everything bonded in so tightly
thank you so much! Very helpful
Perfect 👌
Just moved into my first house and just want you to know this video is STILL helping people! Thank you. Ive been waking up in a FREEZING cold house. Just set it all up to come on every morning and evening (just like in your video) so fingers crossed! 😊
Let’s hope it works 👍🏻
when i try to repressure water is flowing from under the key .any idea why?
The key may not be fully located, put some washing up liquid on the rubbers and try again
Hello, I followed your video using the key and did everything you said but my radiators are still not working. The little clock is on 1 in the green zone but still nothing. I also turned on my radiators from the knob on the actual radiator too. The key is stuck though and doesn’t come out, but is in the unclocked position. What could be the problem?
Not pressure problem if it's. In the green, change the batteries in your thermostat maybe.. Then call someone in. The key will not stop it firing
Thankyou for your reply. Yes we got a plumber in the end. Thanks for your help!
i have cold water coming back into the cyclinder, so the water is hot then luke warm, do you think this re charging could stop that
More likely to be higher pressure coming backwards th-cam.com/video/GYIg9tXdD1o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=OIrSnoNlsuwPXKfe
THATS CLOCKWISE !!!!
No, it's anti clockwise.. It opens the same way as every normal tap. Remember it's facing upwards.. Go to your garden tap and see which way your turning it.. This is the same way. Thanks for watching
But you have just twisted it to the right. If it’s right then it’s clockwise…. I’m so confused
What about how the water workd
What an amazing video! Thank you
Thank you so much! Relaxed music, calm guidance, worked like a charm. Yay 🎉
Great news well done
Can you please clarify, so in order for the timers to come on and off.. the switch at the side has to be on Auto and the other on Run for it to come on and off ? I know this is a very old video but I moved homes last year and it has taken me this long to figure how to use this.. only now finding your video which was very clear btw! so thank you! but not 100% clear as I just need that clarification!!
You are correct, the front slider you will only move when setting and the side only for flicking to permanent on, off or timed (auto)
I copied this when I first moved in here. It worked. Just tried it again cos the pressure is at 0 and it's just leaking loads of water when I turn it. No idea what to do. 😢
You've not located the White key fully, pop some lube like washing up liquid on the rubbers and try again.. Take time to line the unlock symbol with the arrow
Thanks. Very helpful .saved a family from cold 👍
I think this was clearer- but still not sure how this works! Help!
Music is a massive distraction
Thanks for the feedback
Nice clear and to the point exactly what I needed.boiler good to go for winter 2023 👍
Glad it helped
Nice! Did you insulate behind the stove at all?
No, not on this one. . The fire has a built in air gap which suck in from the bottom and comes out the top keeping the back cooler
What’s a service like this costing in todays market
I didn't understand the phenomenon of balance cold from the video but from the comments 😅. Thanks Anyway for the video.
You also said twist it anti clockwise, you twisted it clockwise.
how to make it heating work continuously when I select continuosly still show time
It should stay on continuously if you select it
