Just a comment to the Cargolux, watching the VOD. I realy can understand his confusion as you basicly canceld all his plans, He probably knew how to fly his route and transition, but was realy not able to understand what you wanted him to do with the direct. Not definding him, just saying that you probaly threw him of his game and asked more of him than he was able to do... Probably got really unsecure about every message you then send him after,,,,
Thank you for your comment. I see from where you are coming and totally understand new and nervous pilots. But well, flying a direct to a waypoint is the absolute basic (CoC B8). You can always ask for guidance. But he was just not listening and needed everything twice or three times. Nervous people sound different :) At the approach he was not able to catch the ILS nor fly a visual and had to be resequenced three times. This was a straight in - something every pilot wants and likes, as it shortcuts a lot of distance. Beside that: the route he filed was invalid, so I had to redirect him anyway.

I got a question: can I play MSFS on a laptop?
If your laptop can handle big graphics and has a powerful CPU (gaming laptop), yes. But I implicit with your question, that you have more of an office laptop? Of course you can always turn down the settings as much as possible. Tip: get the Microsoft GamePass for one month ($1 / 1 € Promos) and test it before you buy. MSFS2024 is announced to be more resource friendly, so look out for its release in November
@@TheFlyingATC wait MSF costs money? I got it for free on my Xbox
@@Cactus0_1 haha of course - it costs money on XBox as well. But I guess you have a Xbox Gold/Live Subscription, which includes MSFS. Same on PC if you have that there.

It's funny how an online virtual flying network can evoke the same emotional response as calling real life air traffic control for the first time! I'm an instrument rated private pilot and I have a pretty decent handle on talking to atc, but my first flight on VATSIM a couple days ago stirred up some feelings.
Thanks for the inside. A good simulation just triggers emotions and reactions as the real counterpart, especially when your actions are of consequence and meaning :)
@@TheFlyingATC I think the fact that I was in an A320 and my PTT button kept disconnecting my autopilot (it was mapped to elevator trim, which I was not aware of) had something to do with my nerves, lol!
Thats better, yesterday at Dubai the ATC was talking to other traffic and I said “could you please send me a text cause i cannot hear you”, 3 traffics are laughing and saying “bruh”, i can’t sleep at night cause of my stupidity, hard time for us.
That’s why we are very strict with standard phraseology in our region. Many non native English speakers. The loose FAA practice leads to errors. With language barriers it is sometimes quite hard for beginners. I am happy to type it out in that case (we have shortcuts). Usually I do not like text-only pilots, as it adds a lot of workload for controllers.
@@TheFlyingATC as an asian, I rarely speaks english but I can speak the language, the main problem is hearing, maybe alot of practicing is the only key, especially for me. (I’ll take VATSIM as a part of my ICAO English Proficiency & IELTS practices for my test in the future)

Just do it :) Research, listen to others, learn, practise.

Vatsim controller here, first of all I would like to say that we would prefer you to double check then to mess up, so please dont be afraid to ask us to repeat ourselves. Also, help us help you by putting in your remarks “New Pilot”, or something similar. At least when im controlling, I usually talk slower and am more prepared to account for any mistakes that you may make.
Just turn on captions
There are no captions for real voice communication between two human beings on the frequency. (maybe there are for the internal computer ATC?)

Wouldn't you make your initial call on approach because center would hand you off to approach
There are airspaces without approaches. In these the Center usually gives top down service and Flight Informstion Service. (Vatsim). In this case he even called the wrong controller and blocked the frequency for over 18 sec :)

No, it’s the headwind A339 (Freeware). Pretty good

Mod, get it at flightsim.to or google „Headwind A330“. It comes with an installer like the FlyByWire A320 Neo

This Director job sounds hectic. It looked highly stressful.
Sometimes it is but mostly it’s a fun position to control. It largely depends on teamwork and decent/good vPilots :)

On the reporting altitude thing, IIRC current UK controller practice (and likely the same elsewhere) is that a passing altitude is reported by the aircraft to verify the mode c, else the altitude separation minima are different. They're probably just used to being asked to report their altitude that they volunteer it anyway. As of writing, I'm not currently a VATSIM controller in the UK (on the waiting list), so this might be wrong. Edit: I have no clue why they do it for any cleared flight level. Your guess is probably as good as mine.
Yea, that's perfectly fine. But I mean the pilots who report any cleared Flightlevel they reached, not the inital call.

Don't be. Prepare a little bit, connect in observer mode and just listen to the frequency. Watch some TH-cam videos or read some guides. And than try it at a non-busy route maybe just with a departure tower. You can always log out if it is too overwhelming. Just let the controller know that you struggle. They might be able to help you. Just don't fly into busy locations at the beginning.
