The upgrade trap | Rant
Not much editing in this one, just a bit of a rant/story time. Lots of new hardware coming out. Don't feel pressured into upgrading if your PC is running well and doing the things you need it to do.

My gamer girl has been rocking a GTX 1650 Super for quite some time now. It has done a great job but it is time for her to scale up to a proper card. Yeah, a lot of people feel that now that a new generation is out I "need" to upgrade. The problem is the word need. Most of the time you don't "need" to do anything. Ok, if you have the money and you want to do it go ahead just don't think that you need to do it. A card like a 4070 Super can get you very good performance for a long time. Just use what you have. Bottom line is that if you can do the things you want with your computer and play the games you want with good fps you don't need to do anything. New stuff will come out all the time, it doesn't mean that you need to keep spending thousands of dollars to have them.

Don't treat your hardware like an invesment. Don't "flip" your card pre-emptively. You may think you're clever, until its launch doesn't go to plan and you're met with tracking our of stock cards hundreds over MSRP for months. Prepare yourself for the possible outcome or be bitter later.

If you don't know when you should upgrade, there's been a universal answer: get the Nvidia xx70 or AMD xx80 class card every 2 generations, the closer to their release the better to keep the edge. CPU to the i7/lower R9 class every 3-5 years, generational uplift depending.

In my humble professional opinion, you failed him by trying to make an all-rounder build when he clearly intended to upgrade in the future. There's no excuse for needing to upgrade cpu and powersupply and shit just to upgrade a gpu. You should have foreseen that and got him a higher wattage PSU. I would never build a pc for someone in 2024 and onward with less than a 1000 Watt PSU because there's 80+ gold ones you can get with 12VHPWR connections for about 100 dollars and there's just no excuse for building any pcs with less than that. Hardware is only getting more and more power hungry. you SHOULD skimp on GPU when it's blatantly a place holder and further future proof the other components in anticipation of that.

Seeling your gpu just before a new gen drops and then buy a new one is an excellent strategy to stay at high end without investing too much at all. With Cpu's you can do the same space it out like 3-4 gens. Keeping a system too much (like 6 years +) is a good way to be miserable all the time because you are left behind on performance, you need to invest A LOT when you upgrade AND you get close no resale value at all on your older parts. Also i a great incentive to stay relatively in touch with hardware news and developments.

    • @jkteddy77

With the caveat that you NEED a backup card. Launches never go to plan, and a clever scheme can fall away fast, the 3000 series being the greatest example where 2080ti owners wished they hadn't let their babies go pre-emptively

    • @adriancioroianu1704
      @adriancioroianu1704 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

@@jkteddy77 Indeed, but if you don't want to stay without a card you can also sell it just at launch or 1 week to 1 month in. You will lose a bit more of the resale value (but not as much as in the past, if you look at the trends of how these things sell recently, they retain their value a lot more, especially nvidia cards), but at least you won't be without a card at all, maybe just a few days.

I have 2 rules I use to keep myself out of trouble. First, every purchase of "toys" must be in cash money (which actually means the credit card gets paid on the next bill). If I have the money set aside I can spend it. Second, I always ask myself "what problem is this new item solving?" Good examples of problems that need solving are: battery life is bad, can't run new games, is unreliable, is too big/small, and so on. I need to be able to say "I currently can't do X b/c of the limitations of my stuff." If I can't name a specific problem I'm solving then I don't buy said item. I don't know if this approach works universally, but forcing myself to be rational and not emotional is the key. Also none of the above applies to RGB. RGB is life.

I live in the Netherlands and most 4090 prices started around the 2000 euro range. The 3090Ti founders edition was available for 1299, and the aorus came at 1500 euros. Since it also seemed that the 3000 series are a better match with the 10900k i was running the choice was soon made. OF course the intel B mobo had to burn out in the first week.... I've found Nvidia and Microsoft both follow a sort of "every other generation is the good one" system. Windows XP was good, Vista was crap. 7 was good, 8 was crap. 10 was good, etc. With nvidia, the 1080 was a beast and the 20-series was this half-baked pseudo upgrade just to introduce "RTX" but then they're useless for current RTX needs. The 3090 is still extremely viable and valuable, and the 40-series is leaning heavily on AI fakery instead of generating real frames with real power. I never buy anything during the bad cycles of companies who work this way.

As a mechanical engineer and industrial designer, the 4090 is a fantastic multipurpose card. The card is fantastic for 3D model rendering,FEA (Finite Element Analysis),video rendering and stabilization of drone footage. The other benefit of the 4090 is that it is less expensive than Nvidia’s Quadro professional cards.I think the way to view the 4090 and other future Nvidia top specification graphic cards is that their performance allows you to bypass at least one generation of card. The money that is spent on the card is amortized over a longer period of time thus creating greater value. I agree that of the sole purpose of owning a 4090 is for gaming, then the card is overkill.

But if you are rich and wants to experience higher fps in 4k or even 8k gaming for your brand new 4k oled 240hz monitor, maybe you can wait and see how much power 5090 will deliver. For AI, you can either get a 4090 now, or wait for 5090 next year. Don't think there will be telling difference, except 5090 will probably take less time for rendering (from 40s to 25s?) or training (from 24 hrs to 18 hrs?), unless the new card has 48 vram which gives you access to larger model, which I think won't happen until few generations later (maybe 7090?). If you are a pro and you want top performances for AI and money isn't an issue at all, the only way to do it is to get multiple A100 or H100 cards, which would cost at least 20-80 times more. So it doesn't really matter if you are getting a 4090 or 5090 for AI, as they will forever be entry level for recreational use anyway. But unlike other models, they are both very good for recreational use.

the fomo of the smartphones has plagued the pc community, a gpu should last you the same as a console gen and a cpu if its high end maybe 2 console gens. Heck theres people gaming on intel 4th, 6th, 8th gens and if their gpu is good enough they're running eldenring at 1080p no problem. I'm on Ryzen 5000 and all my games are running 120fps+ ar 1440p/4k i dont need to upgrade considering even the ps5 pro is on zen 2 XD

I feel that's a stretch! but 3-5 years should be the minimum time you aim to use hardware. Much past that, and you're getting a better deal just buying a next gen console each generation that will run faster. Zen 5 should game great til 2027 easily though.

Yeah. Don't buy the 4090 in 2022 and game for 2 years. Wait for the 4090ti. Waiting for the mid cycle refreshes is great. Because you can't game on the card for a year. And in exchange you get a 9% performance bump for free!

A 5800x3d and a 4090 are only 6 months apart on their respective release dates. A 5800x3d was the fastest cpu for gaming at that time beating out the 12900k, i dont know where the problem is with that.

the fact of the matter is GPU's have much eclipsed CPU's in the last 5 years. All games on the fastest gpu's are CPU-bound now. The top end cards now need this years CPU, or they are leaving performance on the table as he's referring.

Hey man, so personally I kinda hate anything below 100fps now, but I'll admit I play a bit too much FPS stuff and feel crazy sensitive to 60-70 fps. I think I start feeling the latency in the mouse and that's what does it. That being said, I know many people who feel the same way as you. That's the beautiful part of being human, there's something for all of us I think, like my kid doesn't care at all, I'll walk in and she's struggling through a boss battle at 37fps and I'm like AHHHH! Here's a question for you, do you remember the first time you saw a real 144hz monitor in action? I can tell you the year make and model. I was at a friends house in 2012 and he had a BenQ XL2411T (had to look up the model number) I was mind blown. Started saving for one a day later, and by the time I could afford one, 10 other models hit the show floor. Ended up with an Acer.

Seems like most companies anymore these days, are just a headache waiting to happen. Look the issues with Intel and AMD with CPU/GPU bs. Maybe I just got lucky 15 yrs ago with the ASUS board I bought, or maybe just a lot has changed since then with the company. I'm gonna give them another shot with the upcoming Z890 boards coming out in a handful of days. But one thing I have always liked about ASUS, is they tend to really jam pack their high end boards with a ton of awesome features, whereas a lot of companies seem to skimp a little here and there. The only thing I don't like about ASUS is their overpricing... I bet I'm looking at like $800ish for the board I'll probably end up buying... cause I know the Extreme is going for a little over a $1000. Ouchy.

Hey man, just read your other message on the other video, you are right Asus they do jam pack their boards, they are quite literally the best of the best when it comes to their bios. Where they started to fall flat was when I ended up with more rmas after the pandemic. When I swapped companies, I had less returns. I was doing a lot of volume a few years back too. Also issues with my own personal setup back to back. I remember in particular replacing an x299 deluxe 3 times (that was Intel's fault). Anyway, most people will have good luck, Asus isn't a bad company, I still miss some things about using them, but for volume sales I'd pick a more reliable brand. Also about the pricing, Asus kinda started that trend. The rampage has always been up there, but I remember when x299 dropped and one of the boards was like $1300 if I remember. Crazy stuff 😅

@@techwandoUS My issue is I have OCD and that plays a huge roll in my decisions. But they did well for me back when I last used them, so I figure... why not? If I end up with issues, then I'll opt for something else. I'm just stuck in my ways, kind of like how I can't bring myself to even attempt switching to AMD from Intel... even after the fiasco of the 13/14 Gen problems. I will admit that did notice that the new Z890 boards from them... I don't know... that seem to have that 'know it out of the ballpark' look. I know a good looking board doesn't equate to a good running board, but I am hooked on aesthetics and these don't look bad, but for sure don't make me turn my head like past models. Anyway... when the specs for models come out on the 10th, I'm gonna reach out to you and hopefully ya wouldn't mind giving me your opinion on which one might be best suited for my build. There are things you haven't taken into account. It's probably the best time to take the leap of faith and buy a 4090 if you actually need one... before prices skyrocket which they have already started to. People... If you're waiting for a 5090, please consider that you're going to literally need new wiring in your home to even run it... most people will be sporting 15-amp fuses other than your dishwasher n stove etc... I'm serious... go look at your breakers... seriously... you're going to need 20 amps put in. That's where the 50 series is honestly going Imo lmao. The PSU upgrade is going to just be adding insult to injury because I doubt people will have the juice to run whatever godforsaken specs Nvidia will throw down, etc. etc. etc. I could make a giant list, but why bother. People need to make their own mistakes right. Do your own research and find out what your truth really is. I honestly feel that the 4090 is the card to buy. Buy a 4090 now and you won't need to worry about another card for a decade. My 3090 is still just an absolute monster at gaming and editing... the problem is I don't just game... I stream 5 days a week at 1440 right here on TH-cam and it's getting to the point now where I can still run the newest games absolutely perfectly but streaming them as well and maxing out the graphics and having it look awesome, perform awesome and stream awesome is now not gonna be the cake walk it once was. That's why I'm upgrading to a 4090... that and electricity is included in my outrageous rent bill lmao. I speak truth man. If you're someone in a similar spot, get a 4090, set it & forget it for years & years to come. Otherwise, you don't need it. Listen to this man, he's speaking truth. I hate that I actually NEED this card and having that knowledge has absolutely ruined my entire day. It also led me to this video though, and I gotta say man, I love this video, you should have more subs than you do. I should too if I'm being real, but lol that's the way TH-cam works... she's a fickle bitch. Keep up the good work man!

I've come up with a good philosophy recently. Always buy used, unless absolutely necessary. The way prices DROP to the floor on the second hand market when compared to MSRP makes it clear to me that these things don't actually hold alot of value at all. Buying a 3080ti for $300 in 2024 when it released for $1200 in 2021 is such a loss that it makes it unjustifiable to jump on a new release. I'll coast along with my "mid range" build that I got for half the price and think about all those extra dollars in my bank not being spent on my little videogaming hobby.

100% I'm right there with you. It's hard to convince people though. Many think used stuff somehow has less quality, and in some way sure, components wear out but by the time something that's made solid starts wearing out, you'll already be buying a new PC part to replace it (if you made a smart purchase to begin with) Appreciate you sharing your philosophy 100% in agreement
