Every man who loves his wife above all else would do anything to protect her. And yes, this also means doing terrible things that others might suffer from, but once the protective instinct is activated and the man in question is also burdened by past experiences of loss, this instinct becomes almost like a natural force. Call me crazy, but I would do anything to protect my wife from harm.
