Granola Gear Knits
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 มี.ค. 2020
Hi hanks for being here I’m Emma! I love all kinds of making and crafting but I’ve really settled into knitting for the last few years so here I am talking about it.
My sub-passion in knitting is non-traditional fiber sources. This generally means unravelling commercially made thrifted sweaters for yarn and knitting them into new things! I hope you enjoy :)

THANK YOU
I understand what you mean when you have an idea in mind of how something is going to turn out and then it doesn't quite match your expectations but I think the pink sweater looks really nice on and the pattern is very interesting. I hope you will grow to like it. Happy Christmas Emma. 🎅🎄🙏
Yes I already feel myself warming to it, I’m just a little kooky I guess 😂 Merry Christmas!🎄
Hi Emma looking forward to your what I knit in a year video. Will be watching new series of Virgin River think it's released today. Happy Christmas from UK x
Thank you for watching!
Hi Emma! My mom uses a white bed sheet as a tree skirt, it looks like snow! Meanwhile, I have one from target that's a knit color-work tree skirt which looks like something I could knit. Both look great under a tree!
I can’t remember what I did last year but I think I did something similar like wrapping a blanket around the bottom. So many projects so little time!
Hi Emma I agree with your ethos. Not buying unecessarily is hard as we are faced with so many forms of advertising and I quite often get swept away buying stuff I don't need. Trying to be more intentional. Still working on my Eurus seems to be taking forever. Was that one of the knits you regret?
I actually love my Eurus! It took a while but I needed more slipovers in my wardrobe and it works really well with a lot of what I already own :)
Hi Emma! I don’t know what “norm core” is because I’m old. I would say you are”real” ❤ And that is why I love your podcasts so much. I am in Northern NY now where the wind is whipping and it is icy. I treated myself to a small latte and knitted on the final sleeve of my grey space sweater by Tif Nielan. I’m very excited about this sweater. I am using some Lion Brand and some Knit Picks and I think they were good and affordable choices. If you could see my home and where I am sitting right now by my Christmas tree I think you would feel right at home😊 If I don’t get the chance I want to say Merry Christmas. May you be truly blessed this season.
It’s just a silly way of saying I like being normal, I don’t need things to be curated to some specific style haha. I may place a knit picks order this winter for some yarn, I haven’t tried much of it yet but they have some affordable bases, I hope you’re having some cozy knits by the Christmas tree :)
Very enjoyable episode! For Christmas gifting, I have made a number of pair of socks, fingerless, gloves, and a cat bed❤
I’ve been thinking about some fingerless gloves (for myself😂) this winter! Thank you for watching 🩷
I loved this conversation. I really enjoy your knitting chats. I agree with the pants I like prana pants and they’re pretty expensive. I get them on sale and they last forever!
Oh yes I have a prana skort I thrifted a while ago and it is my absolute favorite thing to wear in the summer!!
I like you, Emma. This was so fun. Merry Christmas! x For Christmas this year, I knit some Bembe socks for my friend, a Polar Star hat for my nephew, a Bellwoods hat for my daughter, some Cyclists Best Friends for my friend and another pair for a Secret Santa gift, a Double Thick Pot Holder for my sister in law, an Inside Cat for my other nephew and a Baby Bear Bonnet for my first grandchild, due in April or May next year 🤗
Merry Christmas! A new baby is so exciting! I knit the baby bear suit (can’t remember the exact pattern name) by knitting for Olive for my baby nephew almost 2 years ago now, how time flies :)
Your lumme pullover looks gorgeous 💕
Thank you! I’m obsessed with the blue sky fibers woolstok, I only bought it because I had a gift card but I’d love to use it again!
❤
Thank you for getting me through some hand winding! :)
Happy to help, thanks for watching!
Hi Emma. Hope that your holiday season is lovely in every way. Hang in there with the sleeves. Maybe you are due for a “palette cleanser” project…something quick and easy, you know? I am working on a scrappy blanket…just my scraps held together with a bare yarn, all garter stitch. Perfect for mindless knitting and warm on my lap. I always look forward to your videos. Thanks!!!!!
I think you’re right. I’ve been trying to push through the big colorwork project because I think once that’s over I won’t have it hanging over my head either. It doesn’t help that I’m sharing those needles with other projects either
I have the pattern and the yarn, I swatched but I want a knitting pal to ask if i get stuck at the eurus, can I PM you for that ? haha
This would give me courage to start, ,I probably not even need help but I'm a bit scared :')
I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to help but it’s always worth a shot!
@@granolagear Just to know there is someone can help already thanks!!
I’m unraveling thrifted sweaters, tried a turkish cast-on for top town toque and it turns out ugly every try 🥲 I just finished listening to A. Serkis narrating LOTR trilogy and it was amazeballs 🤩
I know the feeling, I’ve definitely spent my fair share of time wresting with a goofy cast on :) I was just thinking the other day about how I really need to read through LOTR, I think I’ve maybe read one of the books but never the whole series
I just found your channel and loved it! Thank you for sharing. I also love your chat about reading! I am currently reading More Days at the Morisaki Bookstore which has been lovely. I am currently knitting the dagmar sweater which I find incredibly addicting.
I looked it up and that looks like a lovely book! I’d love to knit a dagmar, maybe later this winter once I get through my big knit list haha thank you for watching!
Your Noro knit is beautiful! I have not used their yarn yet but It always works up so pretty!
I don’t always like the stripey look in bigger garments but it’s perfect for a cowl!🥰
Hi! Always fun to watch your videos. Love your projects. I am working on terrazzo bag from petite knit as a gift for my daughter for Xmas because she loves going to the farmers market. Also working on an Ingrid bandana by mountaintop yarn as another Xmas gift.
I’ve wanted to knit a terrazzo bag for a while! Thank you for watching :)
Hey, Emma, It’s always fun to see what you’re doing. Thanks for bringing more fun into my life!😀
Thank you for watching!!
The weekend hat is supposed to be double folded, you shouldn’t be able to see the cast on! that might explain why it still feels long even though you shortened it? I love love love your Eurus slipover, so inspired to make one for myself now ❤
It’s folded up but I think I expected it to be a total of 3 layers on the brim, maybe I missed something, I don’t always pay enough attention reading! And I love my eurus slipover!! It’s so much fun to wear :)
Your brioche is gorgeous! I am curious, when you thrift yarn or purchase a sweater and reuse the yarn, do you worry about pests? How do you prepare the yarn before you use it?
I wash any sweaters I thrift for yarn, and don't buy anything with moth damage because it's not worth unravelling anyways. I don't usually see evidence of bugs in thrifted yarn but if I'm not sure I stick it in a ziploc an throw it in the freezer for a month!
SEO is very important to get more views and engagement on your TH-cam channel and videos. I can help your videos with keyword research, tagging, title and description optimization. If you are interested in more details, let me know. Thank you! best regards, [Jumur Akter]
I like S, M, L for sizes. As a larger woman, I want to see the pattern on larger women. If I search for 'XL' as text in Projects on Ravelry, I'll see results for XL, XXL, XXXL. I don't know of another way to search finished projects by size. I don't think this method works for the smaller sizes since they use a single letter.
That’s another great point! I personally just find it helpful to have one more point of reference 🤷♀️
Currently knitting a hat with some hand spun yarn ! And lately I have been listening to the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson while I knit! It’s fabulous and your book recommendations are so inspiring!
Amazing! I feel like my spinning is going really well so far so I think it’s reasonable to believe I’ll be able to knit with it :) and Brandon Sanderson is my #1 most read author this year, love him
ImI’m obsessed with buying sweaters from the thrift store for yarn usage 🙌🏻 today I found a pink wool/aplaca yarn so 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Me too! I’m working through some stash now but I have some unravelled yarn I’m really looking forward to finding projects for
Your slipover looks amazing!!!!!
Thank you! I’m so happy with how it turned out :)
So sorry you dont love your cardigan. I understand what you are saying about the cable on the top of the sleeve. Thanks for sharing, this is something I will consider when selecting a pattern or creating my own. I do disagree regarding the sizing. My size is M but its all over the board and it doesnt take into consideration the amount of ease I like. Having size numbers 1,2,3... makes so much more since (if finished measurements of all portions of the sweater are listed) because then I can get a clear picture of how the sweater will fit and I may be able to knit three different sizes depending on my yarn and desires.
I totally get that, I was thinking about it more after filming the podcast and I have 2 reasons that I’m of that opinion though I know it’s uncommon. #1 I realized I was actually more frustrated with the sizing of the Eurus Slipover, its sized 1-5 with no recommended ease so I was frustrated having no reference point from which to choose. #2 is that I’m tall for my category of bust size and sometimes find myself right between sizes. Because of this I’ve kind of trained myself to avoid anything smaller than a size “small” just to be safe. We all have a system when it comes to picking sizes because we’re all a little different :)
As always, a great podcast! I’m excited to see your wips and hear your plans…you always keep me coming back for more!
Thank you so much! It means a lot to have people actually come back and watch another video, I have a lot of fun making these so I’m grateful to have the motivation to continue 💕
I had a too short sleeve problem after I blocked a mohair. I picked up the stitches round the band and extended the ribbing another 2” I swear you can’t see any seam.
Yes it definitely happens, you never know what is going to happen sometimes with blocking, especially if it’s something other than stockinette!
What T are you wearing in this video? It’s soooo pretty!
It’s the Anker top by petite knit!
Thanks for sharing about your experience with the Gregoria cardigan! Looking at it on you, I think if I knit it I’d knit it at a slightly looser gauge (i.e. size up on the needles) but knit at my recommended size to get a little more give on the fit. I’d also probably just figure out my own sleeve decrease rate and length because I hate when my sleeves are too tight and short! It’s a shame because it’s a gorgeous pattern and the FO looks beautiful.
Gauge is already honestly not as dense as I would like, if I cared to redo it I think I’d just totally rework the sleeves longer 🤷♀️
You never knit alone. There is always someone who is also knitting at the same time. ❤
A great way of looking at it!
Oh how I love your attitude!! 😂❤
Haha I just can’t help it sometimes especially when I’ve been ruminating on it for a while 😂
Thank you for keeping me company while I did an Italian bind off on the Lulu slipover😊 And thank you for sharing your beautiful knitting with us 🤗Your brother's sweater looks amazing 😍
Omg I’ve been through that gauntlet, all the Italian bind off on the Lulu is brutal! Thank you for watching I’m glad you enjoyed it:)
I appreciate you sharing your concerns with the beatrix cardigan. Ughh the euros slipover is on my list to knit as well. 😍 I have the dagmar jacket on the go so i think i need to finish that before picking up another cabled pattern.
Ugh yes love the dagmar but I’m thinking I’ll knit the rather before I consider it. I totally recommend the Eurus it’s been a really fun knit for some reason!
That FO is next in my queue… yarn bought… I’m processing.
I think there are some really beautiful ones out there, and people who love their version so don’t let me entirely dissuade you! I just want to make sure I’m totally honest with my take because that’s kinda the whole point of this community imo. If you know ahead of time what you might face it’s easier to make edits in your own version:)
@ I was already worried about the front not closing properly from another video. Honestly I’ve only been knitting for a year, I may choose another more at my level…maybe not. Processing… haha
There are definitely other more traditional options you could use that gauge & quantity of yarn for. I also think there’s no reason not to add more buttons to close it up more too
😭
Which size did you make :)
The size small but my gauge was a little large :)
I loved this type of video!
Thank you! They take a lot more time to make usually but they are fun when they’re finished :)
May I suggest that you get a good thimble? It would save your fingers and make pushing the needle through thick material much easier.🥰
I was thinking just that as I was struggling to push it through on the first pair of pants😂 the problem was largely resolved when I sewed off camera because I had more control holding it closer to my body
I figured out why I get meh vibes from Beatrix - I find it busy for my personal taste and the fit is odd (I like really long sleeves and oversized fits). But other knitters can probably make it look so good
I just finished it and honestly it’s my least favorite sweater I’ve knit. I like the idea of it but I don’t think the fabric it creates was what I expected, it looks much more dense in photos than it is in person. I also don’t find that it fits well, the sleeves overall are very odd and the buttons down the front just aren’t not functional enough.
So many patterns there's not just enough hours in the day 😅. I finally found some thrifted wool it's aran weight. Do you have any suggestions for a vest or cardigan in that weight wool x
I believe the chunky version of the Lulu slipover is Aran weight, that’s a great one!
You're right 😊. I also found the Eurus slipover which you mentioned in your winter makes video. Think I will make one or the other. Thanks for your help!
The eurus is an undertaking but it’s been fun so far!
So many fun projects ahead for you!
Yes I’m excited!
Beatrix is next in my queue. Did you use the recommended yarn? I was listening to your podcast while I was driving so I might’ve missed it.
I did not, I used yarn unravelled from a thrifted sweater that was predominantly wool. I hit gauge with it and the fabric isn’t too loose but I found the fabric to still be pretty holey, a mohair might remedy that slightly though
Thank you!
Fun topic, Emma! I’ve got quite a few good thrift finds in my drawer as well. I think my favorite one is a wool angora blend cardigan with a shawl collar. It lives at our second home in Northern New York where it is absolutely my comfort on a winter morning with my tea. I have a lot more but I am too comfortable in my chair to count or look at tags. But trust me, you’ve got me beat.😊
Yes I've always had a bit of a sweater collecting problem! It comes from living in a colder climate for most of my life I guess, always need to prepare to layer and still put together a fun outfit every day!
This is such a good topic for a video!
Thank you!! It’s a little niche I guess but I thought it would be an interesting comparison for myself and other hand knitters :)
I'm knitting my husband the twila pullover by Christina Korber-Reith. It's aran weight, a sweatshirt style. He won't wear cardigans.🙄
If that’s a really nice one!! My husband is also not a cardigan man haha, limits the options for sure
I’m currently knitting that exact Olympic sweater and having too much fun!😂 I recommend knitting it
Ugh yes I may consider knitting one for myself in a more reasonable size, then my husband and I can match!
I have a stack of commercially made mohair/alpaca etc “fancier” yarn sweaters that I’ve had for years and I loooove them to bits 🙌🏻 also wear them to bits so the extra nylon/polyamide content is giving them longevity. My absolute favorite black raglan ribbed turtleneck is H&M 😅
Yes sometimes it’s nice to wear an ole reliable sweater you’re not as worried about damaging!
