Edvin Kallstenius 1881-1967 ~ Piccolo Trio Seriale Op.47a (1956)
This Small Trio Op.47a employs a Flute, an English Horn (Cor-Anglais), and a Clarinet. There's a Northern light and clarity about the sound, It's also bright and lively, and rather jolly, especially for a piece written by a 75 year old Swedish Composer using serial form (ie. twelve-tone music, albeit Kallstenius' own expression of that technique). The following year he arranged an alternative version Op.47b, scored for Violin, Viola & Clarinet (1957).

Edvin Kallstenius (1881-1967) ~ String Quartet #3 in C minor Op.8 (1913-14)
มุมมอง 5005 ปีที่แล้ว
Composed in his early thirties, this is a mature work in Kallstenius' already established distinctive idiom, but here exploring the limits of tonal experimentation for the period. In fact this piece could have special value in "training the ear" to understand and appreciate initially unrewarding and challenging tonal combinations. After three or four hearings, unexpected brightness and colour e...

Erkki Melartin (1875-1937); "Pan" vs. extract from "Symphony #6"

"Pan" is clearly very closely related to the Sixth Symphony... but which came first? Melartin finished the Symphony in 1925 having been working on it for several years. The song is said to date from no later than 1920 ~ at this time Melartin set a number of poems by Finland's then most famous poet Veikko Antero Koskenniemi (1885-1962), "Pan" is from his "Runoja" published in 1906. translate.goo...

I've never heard RVW channeled so authentically and effectively. The piece is indeed obviously inspired by, and has echoes of "The Lark Ascending," while still remaining a unique work. It has an elegaic quality to it, augmented by the bell sound toward the coda. I wonder what VW himself thougnt of it when he heard it, as I assume he must have done. Hopefully, that imitation---or at least inspiration!----truly is the sincerest form of flattery (or at least appreciation). I am unfamiliar with the composer; you mention this piece is completely different from anything else he wrote. That seems a great pity, as he seems to have a gift and genuine feeling for this style and mood of composition. And so many who possessed these things died so young, who knows what they were robbed of writing and we of hearing?

Hi Pietro, sorry, this is all I can find! Only a fraction of Melartin's works were published in his lifetime, and many performances are based on photocopies of worn-out and much-altered original manuscripts used in performances conducted by Melartin and later by his associates and pupils. I've noticed that until relatively recently it was very rare to find recordings of complete substantial works by him ~ usually only short works or selected movements from larger ones, on compilation discs with several better-known Finnish or Scandinavian composers. There's no evidence of this recording appearing on CD or LP, but it will almost certainly have been broadcast on Finnish radio within the last 30 years.

Only the Sixth Symphony was published in Melartin's lifetime, the others existed in increasingly degraded copies, much annotated, modified and re-modified over the decades by conductors for performance... resulting in much uncertainty and confusion. In recent years, the Erkki Melartin Society has put great effort into a project to produce clean accurate scores of the Symphonies. This has been a slow and painstaking process, one of the first fruits of which was their new, most authentic version of the Third Symphony (you will find this among my TH-cam videos). Now, I find they have been making excellent progress; (GoogleTranslate) June 2019; "The Erkki Melartin Society's project to transcribe Melartin's symphonies is nearing completion. Symphony No. 2 has now been published , Op. 30, No. 2, in E minor , whose score and preface can be found on the Sheet Music page. The transcription work has been done by graphic designer Jani Kyllönen . After this, there is only Symphony No. 6 left, which was the only one published while Melartin was still alive. Like other symphonies, it will also be reviewed and published in 2019-2020. erkkimelartin.fi/em/
