What Is Unconscious Bias - And How It Shows Up in Leadership
Did you know that we all have unconscious biases that impact our thoughts, behaviors, and interactions, often without us realizing it?
What is unconscious bias?
Unconscious bias is a natural filtering system our brains use to process millions of bits of data daily, stemming from our survival instincts. While this quick judgment mechanism is helpful for survival, it can lead to discrimination in modern contexts, especially in leadership roles.
In this video, we'll explore how unconscious bias affects hiring, promotions, performance evaluations, and team communication. Understanding and addressing these biases is crucial for fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.

I can only underline the importance of regular meetings. I must admit that at times I feel like cancelling the meeting as I had the impression they could not come up with topics. But it has become such a valuable time to bond and get to know each other even though we might not always talk about tough operational issues.
Absoulety, I think most leaders have this feeling from time to time that they would rather cancel because they worry that they'll sit in silence, and it might be a waste of time. But it never is a waste of time. Even if you end the meeting after 15min. The importance is the reliability and the set window of time for you to talk. I find it helps sometimes to have just 1 or 2 talking points or questions prepared just in case they don't have anything to say. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Are you starting a new leadership role soon? Here is a video with valuable tips to help you have a successful start: th-cam.com/video/_1Jbb5-XQrs/w-d-xo.html
Something else that really helps me to feel and sound more confident is also to practice saying key messages out loud. When I do so repeatedly, my whole body seems to remember the tone and confidence when it is actually time to share this message.

What questions do you have about Psychological Safety?
Are there additional tips for hybrid work and maintaining a great work culture?
Thank you for your questions. I have not yet created a video for culture specifically in hybrid teams. In general, the same principles and tips apply. But it is even more important to allow for enough time to chat and created moments of connection. Especially, if part of the team meet in person regularly and some team members are only connecting remotely. Do you have a particular challenge you’re struggling with?
@@annekoopmann no, I’m just researching for this possible job I have interviewed with twice now and waiting on a third interview 🙏!! This is a big sticking point with the company culture that has hybrid and remote employees. I would be the Office Manager who creates and supports all cultural initiatives if hired.
Thanks Anne, your video is very informative.
Thank you. I’m so glad you find it helpful!
I like the keeping record after meetings. I do this but I’ve noticed that no other supervisors document so I stopped because I thought “Maybe I’m being too analytical and it’s not that serious.” Now, I feel more confident to start back knowing that this is a good rule of thumb. Thank you. Your videos are helping me tremendously.
Thank you so much for your comment and sharing your thoughts. Yes, I think it is very helpful to take a few notes after a meeting or conversation you have had. This will help you to provide positive and constructive feedback with clear examples and it’s also a great way to back yourself up in case of conflict or misunderstandings. Listen to what feels good and supportive for you! And keep doing that, no matter what others do! ☺️
Thanks for naming the sandwich message. I find myself doing this for diplomacy.
Yeah I think it can be so tempting to provide feedback that way. Might feel easier. I’ve done that too ☺️ Providing positive feedback is super important too, of course. But just make sure each message is clear and intentional. You want the positive and the constructive feedback to be heard and fully taken on board.
I can't help feeling this is repackaging common sense as science. Any normal human being with healthy psychology knows that it's best to be honest, real, open, etc. Couldn't we sum up all of this theory in just saying 'Don't be a psychopath'?
I understand your view. And I agree that for someone with high emotional intelligence and good self awareness, this might sound obvious. But I have seen first hand that it is unfortunately not as easy, especially for emerging leaders who grow in a toxic culture or under bad leaders. They think that leading with authority, pressure, shame and blame is what it takes to be a good leader. They follow their "role models" and might only later start to question what they can do to be more in alignment with their values and support the team better. And also build better cultures. I guess, that's why I made this video to support leaders who want to change, who want to establish better leadership and feel more confident in leading the change.
@@annekoopmann Wow, that is a great reply. Thank you! I had a blind spot around the high emotional intelligence thing. This is a genuine problem for me as ironically, despite having high emotional intelligence, I forget too often that it doesn't come naturally to some other people. Thanks for taking the time to point that out. You've really revised my opinion and taught me a good lesson. Thank you!
@@galacticambitions1277 You're very welcome. Sorry for the late response. (Only just saw your comment)

Very useful. Thank you for this video ❤
Thank you for the feedback. I’m so glad you found it helpful!
This video is a gem. Thanks for sharing these tips
Thank you. I’m so glad you found it helpful. Which tip did you find most useful?
@@annekoopmann Actually I liked the last one. You clearly stated that building relationships is important with pure intentions. Often building relationships is taken as buttering someone but you have clarified the difference between these. Thanks.
I knew few people having these traits.. So now I know how not to be like :)
Always good to reflect on how we don’t want to be 😆
Thanks for these tips. Being manager, I would need more such tips for conducting Appraisals. As Human behaviour is not black/white, so always good to listen some case studies first and prepare ourselves
Thank you so much. I'm very glad it was helpful. What are some examples that you would find helpful to have explored in more detail?
@@annekoopmann Hello, currently the market is not doing well so organizations have to broaden the bell curve where most of the employee has to give "3 ratings (out of 5)" even if their performance is at 4 and so on. So convincing employee and keeping their motivation is a challenge. ( From an organizational perspective this is the better way than downsizing ). Can you make a few videos about keeping employees motivated in such a time?
Amazing tips
Glad you think so! Thank you.
