Long live the "Plink"! Thank you.
I'm having trouble with the 2 blow on a new Seydel Session Steel Blues in G. It looks like it has a slightly smaller gap. Should I try to increase the gap?
What kind of trouble are you having? It is hard to say without knowing the nature of your problem. The gap on the 2 blow should be lower than the gap on blow #1 and less than that on blow #3
@@AllThingsSeydel If I do a 3 draw, 3 blow, 2 blow sequence fast, the 2 blow chokes out and doesn't make any sound. If I sort of finesse it I can make it sound. My other harmonicas do not behave this way.
@@plasmaportl yeah, just take it apart and open the gap up a little. It should be slightly more than the 3 blow and slightly less than the 1 blow. That should fix it. Probably have to take it completely apart to get it right
@@AllThingsSeydel Thanks! I'll give it a try.
@@AllThingsSeydel It worked great. The stainless is harder to gap than brass.
Great video. Thanks
Thanks Greg. Simple video as usual. I just ordered some spare reeds and bolts from Seydel. I messed up an 8 draw reed on my favourite harp so it's worth a shot. I was ready to throw it away so a new set of reeds in UK £35 & the bits cost me 30£ so we'll see. If it goes well I got a B harp with a bum reed so I'll fix that up too. 👍
Thank you, Greg, all I needed to know!
Always useful to watch this video (and your others) again and again. Meanwhile I'm missing around 5 blow valves on my Symphony 48...and it's still sounding fine! Someday I will replace them - just for the practice.
Good job my black belt Amigo...from your buddy from AZ.
There are felt pads inside my sydel harmonica. When you rinse the harmonica they soak up water. What are they for and do I need them. This is a 10-hole seydell stainless steel reed blues favorite
these are called valves and they make some of them play smoother. They also allow for single reed bends. You may take them out if you want and may not notice a difference but they do help somewhat on lower tuned harps.
What are the felt dampers inside my sydel 10 whole harmonica. I didn't realize they were there when I rinsed it with water they obviously got wet. I don't see them in any of the Seidel harmonicas you're working on
Those are called "valves" or "windsavers" and they have dual purpose. They actually help low harps play a little better. They also permit single reed bends which allow the player to play more chromatically - with proper instruction and practice.

so cool Greg! sounds great!
Thank you, My harmonicas are Seydel 1847 Classic. I will try it.
Hello, while I am late to the party. After building a most beautiful sounding harmonica, I believe he should of used a magnetic slide and used rounded end covers keeping the internal part of the covers. Great video, Great sounding harmonica and the comb itself is magnificent. Cheers
Hi is it possible to paddy richter tune a standard richter harp with stainless steel reeds. Had success with brass but as yet not attempted stainless steel.

@@AllThingsSeydel thankyou very much
I just bought a Seydel 1847 will wilde tune Harp in the key of C and my third hole draw and blow is stuck. At $106 price i would hope that wouldn't happen . Anyway it seems to be pretty common on this brand harmonica. I'll give it a try and hope for the best. Thanks for the information
Hey Joseph, if you purchased it from me, by all means please email me and I will immediately refund your money. If you purchased it elsewhere, you can reach out and I will see about getting it repaired for you. It is not common but neither should this happen on a brand new harmonica
Love this 🔥🔥🔥
Im from south America so is nearly impossible to found valves replacements :c
Nice demo and good playing harp on the rack. Save the Last Dance has some lines that make me think this would be a good tuning for Jimmy Buffet tunes.
Super
Sounds great! Fascinating that non-slider.
Man Greg, you play that well! Do you prefer the chromatic over diatonic?
Trying to learn. Gonna be awhile 😂
Where can I have my harmonic fixed? I don't want to do it
is it a Seydel? 1623customharmonicas.com

I've successfully converted a couple of brass reed harps recently to Paddy Richter, but after watching this I think I'll leave the stainless steel conversions to you, Greg. Thanks for the video.
Saved me $60. Thanks!
This should be required viewing for all chromatic harmonica players!
👍
It's much much better than before. Thanks a lot! Greetings from Brasil.
Just saved me $55 on a new harmonica! Thank you!
Great news! One way to support my channel is to purchase your Seydel harps from me directly through my web site: 1623customharmonicas.com
Thanks! I was getting nothing on the 1 blow on a new 1847. Now it’s fine 👍🏽
What’s your favorite trick for limiting the torsional vibrations? I’ve seen a touch of nail polish, BluTak, masking tape, beeswax, the list goes on. Which do you prefer?
I use valve glue which is basically clear epoxy fabric adhesive (E6000) But nail polish works really well. The key is you are only limiting the vibrations .. reducing not eliminating them. One other thing that helps is the gap. The lower the gap the less the squeal but obviously, there is a limit to that. Good discussion and hope this helps..
Thanks greg!
Thank you Greg!
That was helpful. I already "fixed it" so I'll put it back now haha. Thanks.
Thanks. Very useful. How often - if things are operating more or less properly - is it necessary to take disassemble the whole harmonica?
If everything is operating properly, don’t disassemble … there’s no need to
@@AllThingsSeydel Thanks!
Dear Greg, Thank you for the video. I have the deluxe steel harmonica with the current mouthpiece assembly order. First, put the blank, then the slider, and then the H-bar. On the other hand, in Saxony, the design is first the H-bar, then the slider, and then the blank. I have two questions. 1. Why is it so? Is one of the orders better? 2. Does the Saxony mouthpiece assembly fit the deluxe steel harmonica?
I'm not exactly sure why it is designed as such. The H-Bar design is Seyde'ls premier mouthpiece/slide setup. In general, the parts are completely interchangeable.... This is true for newer generation Seydel chromatics but it is possible that there are parts out there for older models that can't be switched around but most of them can and are interchangeable.. thankfully.. that's another brilliant feature of Seydel's outstanding design and manufacturing team.
Just watched this video again, and now a question. Often I hear a faint, hollow, metallic sound mid-range on my Symphony 48 orchestra tuning. Is that normal? Or is some reed (or are some reeds) just slightly touching the edge of the reed slot? This is especially noticable when I push the slide in.
Great question. This is not normal but it isn't necessarily abnormal, either. I would say this is most likely a reed barely bumping the slot. If you can identify which reed it is, you can try to realign it or next time you send it in for service, make a note and I will see if I can fix it.
@@AllThingsSeydel Thanks for the info and the speedy response. You would be my service center of choice, but I live in Germany. I will keep an eye on the source of that faint sound. In fact, I just ordered a reed wrench from Seydel directly... just in case I get daring.
Thank you for the excellent video. After watching, I have the courage to replace the spring in my Seydel steel harmonica, even though my spring is still working. Is it worth replacing the spring after several years due to potential fatigue? It is better to assemble (at least partially), as the first step, the cover plates and only then the slider parts. I think that such an order of assembling (cover plates first) better protects the valves. Am I wrong?
Don't replace the spring until it breaks. There is no need to mess with it. Also on some models you can't assemble the slider first to protect the valves. If you can, it is always best.
Thank you for the suggestions @gregjones9443
Has an interesting rattly tin can overtone to it
We'll put you down as a pass..thx
I just bought a seydel chromatic deluxe. There is a very slight rattle sound immediately after I play low notes on the first three holes. It is nothing like the loud rattle in this video. I'm just wondering if it is normal for chromatics?
I would bet it is the valves. I would run it by your instructor who should be able to diagnose this. You may email me if you need to bring it in for service. greg@1623customharmonicas.com
Where do you buy a Psardo philharmonica 64 harmonica?
Thanks, Greg!
Super! Thanks! Very informative.
Thanks! Super useful.
How do you install the bumpers?
I make my own bumpers out of heat shrink hose.. but you can also make them out of coffee straw
th-cam.com/video/47ZTcrUMmd0/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! Using your method to put the slide assembly and mouth piece back together worked like a charm!
So it’s essentially a Paddy/Country hybrid with the 9th draw an octave above the 5th draw?
Why it is so difficult to do this hahahaha
that's the nature of chromatic harmonicas.. it takes practice to play and maintain them but well worth the effort
