NEW Garmin InReach Messenger Plus Review (+ InReach Messenger Plus vs iPhone Satellite Messaging)
Y'all know I’ve been a huge fan of my Garmin InReach mini 2 and that it’s been literally attached to my shoulder on most of my forays into the backcountry.
I recently got my hands on the new InReach Messenger Plus which sports a host of new and improved features…but is it still relevant in a world where you can send SOS and even text messages via satellite with your iPhone?

    I went with the Garmin 66i. I love it. Still have my old spot 2 sitting arond as well. But love my 66i and the ability to text from anywhere. Make my favorite ride, the Idaho BDR, where you are out of singal the majority of it. Its nice to let the kids know i am ok and other friends with me can use it to text their family as well. Not to mention the breadcrumb trail it leaves for everyone to look to see where you are and follow along.

    Great review. Might be time to upgrade from the version 1 - but ….. no ability to text without the phone is still a bummer. BTW - if you get separated from another inreach user - you can text the assigned email for the units and find each other.

    Just returned from a five day camping trip in the desert. I never turned my inreach on. The satellite text on the iPhone is faster easier and free. I’m canceling my garmin sub on Monday. I’m completely garmin free now using a mini tablet for navigation with Gaia and DMD and now satellite texting from my everyday phone.

      @MikesProjectsandHobbiesMC As long as you have no worry about breaking or losing your phone then you are probably fine. I carry a Inreach Mini 2 on every ride, rarely turn it on and carry it mostly for emergency SOS and Satellite messaging when out of cell coverage but after $399 for the device, $13 every month is just price gouging. Garmin could easily offer free SOS but..

      @MotoCampNerd 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ynotjf there's always the PLB route, no subscription but also no extra features. • @MotoCampNerd
      @MotoCampNerd 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @max___power The unfortunate standard across the board for any satellite messenger if you want to have custom communication with others without phone signal. If you want a rescue device that has no monthly fee, you'll want to look into a PLB aka personal locator beacon. These send a satellite distress signal to rescue services but you will not be able to communicate with anyone about your situation or what's going on until help arrives. These shine because you have the ability to communicate with dispatch about your issue and with family or friends as needed. Alternatively a cheaper option would be the ZOLEO that also uses the iridium satellite network.

    • @MotoCampNerd
      @MotoCampNerd 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @PrestonGladd Yep, you can send the sos and check in default messages with the click of a button, no phone required, but when you want to send a custom text, or use all the features, you'll need a phone. Pros are being small and compact. If you don't mind a larger device then getting a handheld GPS works for not having to be dependent on your phone if it were to get lost or broken.

    I'm putting together some gear to go camping this Christmas (It's New Zealand ok, our hottest month is January) I have luggage on the way, a tent, mat, sleeping bag, cookware & burner... working my way through the list and seeing what can be smaller, lighter and worse than what I used to have 30 years ago as an Airforce Cadet playing those games (just a little more advanced than Scouts) It has been so long that I can't rely on memory anymore. what are the easily overlooked things that people forget? It's hard enough trying to figure out if I should have one saddle bag designated for bike repair, or have all of the heavy stuff right at the bottom of both so I have to empty both of them to fix something...

    I love cooler weather moto camping. No bugs and no crowds in the national forests. A friend and I went camping in the Hoosier National Forest in Indiana last year on December 8th. The night time low was 32 F. I slept in a hammock and was a bit chilly. I went home and bought a Hennessy 4 Season Explorer XL Zip hammock. It has an open cell foam pad in a pocket under the hammock, similar to a sleeping pad in a tent. It works similarly to a hammock under quilt only much better. I now sleep comfortably in freezing weather in a hammock, and I can go lower with an added sleeping pad inside the hammock for more insulation. Pitching the fly directly over the hammock ridge line and not staking out the fly so there is a static air bubble under the hammock adds 15 F of warmth, which is amazing. I concur with the hat tip. I have a heavy duty balaclava that keeps me very warm for its weight and bulk. The human body increases blood flow to the head to ensure the brain is warm and that wastes a lot of heat. Want to stay warm? Keep the heat in your head. Heated grips are my cold weather secret weapon. I spent $120 and three hours adding them to the bike. This was my first experience with heated grips. I thought they'd be a seldom used luxury. I use the heated grips all the time and I can't imagine having a bike without heated grips. Winters are milder here than they were when I was younger. The days are shorter and it rains more often, but I'm semi retired and can pick and choose my days. If we get a couple of decent days in the winter, I'm going moto camping!

    I have an MSR Elixir 2. I bought it several years ago because it came with the footprint, and was cheaper than the Hubba Hubba (which was at the time what all my friends recommended) It has served me very well, even during monsoon season in Colorado. Free standing, 2 layers. It has 2 large vestibules, and can (could?) buy an additional garage that attaches to it. Heavier, but built stronger than the hubba bubba. I think 5ish pounds. I'd probably buy it again if I were to destroy or lose my current one.

    Sir, your audio is horrible. Your lave mic is on your hat, and should be on your shirt. Not only for it to be closer to your mouth, but your chest ( the bass it needs). Just fyi

      @robertburks2126 Yeah I've since upgraded. It was a cheaper one from Amazon and if I put it any closer it was too loud and caused a ton of distortion and had no adjustment. New lav is DJI and much cleaner

    One thing you did wrong in my opinion was place your tent/bike in the roadway. Yeah, it's a cul-de-sac, how many drunks crash through the end of a dead end road? I'm especially conscious of this in high usage desert areas like SoCal as folks love to run their vehicles at night and at speed. Just sayin. I went camping last year in the forest not far from NorCal BDR section 5, and spent the night in my tent with my pit bull and yorkie. The yorkie didn't care, just cuddled and snored. But my pit bull was up all night listening to every whisper. 2nd night she slept with mom in the trailer.....
