Huge Harvest! // July (No-Dig) Garden Tour
We're slowly working our way towards our goal of never having to buy a vegetable again. We have a 50m² fenced do-dig garden that we have talked about a lot, and now we can finally truly harvest the fruits of our labour.
We are Zak and Jackie and together with our child we live in the mountains of Central Portugal. In 2019 we found ourselves buying 2 hectares of abandoned land and a house, and we finally made the move in 2022. Follow us on our journey of rehabilitating former Eucalyptus plantation land, building a house and a life in a new country.

Life in the Mountains of Portugal: Restoring a Schist House (ENG SUBTITLES)

We are Zak and Jackie and together with our child we live in the mountains of Central Portugal. Self-Sufficiency: Meat Rabbits in the Garden
We’re talking about using a rabbit tractor, how we raised and then butchered our meat rabbits and how we process our kiwis. Some clarification on the PFAS situation: We're not crazy concerned about exposure. We use Gore-Tex raincoats and other materials. We do try to avoid them when they come either in contact with heat or the mouth. This is the Podcast I'm talking about in the video: www.thegu...

Foraging, Fermenting and Canning // Preserving the Summer Harvest
Follow us along as we harvest our pear trees, gather wild berries and quince and process kilos of chestnuts and olives. Wild foods are more sustainable for us to process, as we don't need to invest any water resources into them. Another video on our mushroom hunts and acorn flour is coming up! We are Zak and Jackie and together with our child we live in the mountains of Central Portugal. In 201...
How Do We Afford This? // COST OF LIVING In Rural Portugal & Garden Update
We break down our finances, so you can see what the monthly cost of living in Portugal looks like. We did have savings (about 25k) when we arrived here almost two years ago, but most of that has been spent on equipment, building supplies, car repairs and life in general. So now we just live with what we receive monthly and we're still doing really well :) We are Zak and Jackie and together with...
Climate Change and Land Stewardship
Portugal is probably not the safest bet when it comes to the future, but it was a bet within our budget. This place might burn down, but we're working hard to reduce this risk. P.S. while we did travel quite a bit and blew a few tons of carbon into the atmosphere (we mostly walked, hitchhiked and cycled, but there were a few flights), we have since changed quite a bit. Nothing compared to the a...
