Riding the Carretera de las Presas (GC-605) Dangerous Mountain Road on Gran Canaria
The Carretera de las Presas on Gran Canaria, the GC-605, is reputably one of the most treacherous roads in Europe. I was inspired to do this after watching a video from the @TheMissendenFlyer who did one of the guided tours. The road surface varies wildly from perfect to horrendous.
We rented motorbikes from Picypoc in Playa del Inglés. I got a Yamaha XSR900 and Ben hired an XSR700. We headed up into the mountains to the village of Tejeda for lunch before riding the 73 hairpins as the road descends 979 metres through stunning scenery, then onto Puerto de Mogán via the GC-200. Afterwards, we rode the GC-500 coast road back to Maspalomas. The claims on the number of hairpins is subjective but I did my own count and got different numbers each time.
Skip to 24:15 for the good bit of the Carretera de las Presas.

I believe that the softness of the front brakes was a purposeful design choice made by the Suzuki engineers to improve pillion comfort -- less knocking together of rider and pillion helmets when braking. Reading through the press materials and watching the Suzuki videos when the motorcycle was first introduced, I was impressed with how much work went into making the motorcycle a proper sports tourer such as the subframe, panniers, and available heated grips and touring windscreen. The recommended rear tire pressure of 42 psi is another bit of evidence that Suzuki intended the GT to carry a passenger.
Absolutely brilliant vid as always buddy; always love your presentation style. And what a great day out it was eh... I'm not sure what I was more impressed by... The GC-605, or your lunchtime cooking skills! 👌
Good to see ya geez.
Looks amazing.
Can't beat a bit of riding in GC when the weather is pants at home!
Nice one great place to ride the place has so much to offer as a biker
Omg I live in watton and love seeing all the bikes
you need to slow down a bit on a single road
Typical Biker! "Can do Will do over the reasonable speed limits", definitely not a Royal Enfield rider? needs a bigger powered bike, to vroom all over! (see I will do over 80?) ok hardly any oncoming cars BUT. Nice vid though, empty roads good, not the A470, nice one.
20 mins from.my house, fab on my hypermotard
"My ferry buddies are going to the mountains of Spain, and I'm going to Asda" 😂😂
That was a real hoot!!... I live in Larne. This vid is sooo entertaining. There aren't many rides from our wee province on UTube. It is so so nice to be able to recognise local landmarks. And so so nice that you, Mike, like our roads. I am glad that you were welcomed by local riders at ASDA (I shop there weekly), and that your journey was problem, and rain free. BikerMike... Thank you for this. I hope others will follow your trail. Best wishes.
Glad you liked it. I do think NI needs to be explored more by bikers from GB
I'm not sure of the price difference, but P&O sails into Larne and Stena sails into Belfast, but because you're going over north of Lough Neagh, you were better doing the Larne route. Pedantic point: Stranraer is pronounced Stran-raar. The arches are commemorative structures marking a Protestant's town's Orange Order Twelfth of July marching season celebration of the Battle of the Boyne initially, but other battles are also honoured. Technically, they're temporary but often erected permanently. You'll notice the 'flegs' of the unofficial flag of Northern Ireland, the Ulster Kingdom flag and The Union flag, with sometimes a Scottish Saltire also. I imagine, hopefully, that most car users in NI are decent towards bikers due to the long history of Road Racing, and the sheer about of bikers in the province. I've not yet seen your tour videos yet, but if you haven't been then a visit to Joey Dunlop's memorial is a must.
Great to hear your thoughts. I'll definitely be coming back.
Spent many a happy hour racing sidecar outfits up and down Benone with a few mates, the beach has been used as a race track since 1911 and Sprint races still take place there most years. The Tower at the beach is the Musseden Temple, it is modelled on the Temple of Vesta in Rome.
@@george-ev1dq would love to see a race there
still IN EUROPE, after all those exits
@@michaelfraser5723 🤣🤣🤣
Fascinating, the transformation from home Hell's angel, to modern sport biker on the road.
If you have to go somewhere when its zero or below bear in mind if you use your phone for navigation and its on top of your dash it can suddenly shut down from the cold. found that out on the motorway the hard way
Add a couple of strips of black tape or vinyl along the bottom of your visor this allows you to tilt your visor to any angle to block the sun even with a internal visor you can still be glared. get a pinlock insert. knox do great hoods or neck warmers. Thermals are great as a base layer but if the temp drops chucks waterproofs over the top of your gear. Otherwise a light summer jacket with a black reflective work jacket over the top will keep people warm and very dry. upgrade headlight bulbs to novsight led. heated gloves while not cheap are far better than heated grips
I love your commentary 😊
Looks awesome
@@wetiain it was amazing. I definitely wanna go back
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I get about 160miles out of the naked version riding enthusiastically over mixed roads…
My best biking memory, is travelling the B4407 when an Osprey came from nowhere, and flew just a couple of feet from my bars at head height for a good mile or so
So I just bought a 2024 1000 GT and I get 196 mi out of my tank and that's riding in A mode but not always in town. That's also testing it from the south coast of England to Inverness in Scotland. I think you must be pretty throttle happy if you are not getting 160, mi or more at your tank.
Biking wasn't for me. I couldn't cope with all the heavy leathers, armour and lugging a helmet about when you reached your destination. Everyone's in sunglasses and shorts and you're there dressed like Darth Vader on the hottest day of the year lol. I didn't feel fully comfortable on a bike either. I was always aware that if I came off, something on the bike broke or a car hit me, it could be curtains or a 12 month stint in hospital. It just wasn't for me because I'm obviously not a biker. The best transport for me on a trip like that would be a classic convertible. Shorts, t-shirt, the wind in my hair and enough room in the boot for a spare t-shirt and a few bottles of beer. Nice ride. 👍
5:22 that parking area is for the 'hole of horcum' which is a huge depression in the ground to the far left of the carpark 😊
@@kevindarkstar I knew that was round there somewhere 😅
@@BikerMike_UK basically just opposite the car park 👍🏻
The road you started on b4391? Happens to be one of my faves.
Why is it annoying when you can't overtake cars on double whites that are adhering to the speed limit?
The B4407 is one of my favourite roads, Vid from 3 years ago, in the opposite direction. th-cam.com/video/UL5UgQLhwNY/w-d-xo.html
Pub is anti biker but Tea rooms are great go up to the Three Tuns if you want a biker friendly pub just over the bridge and up the hill
Did the road both ways at the weekend. It is indeed a good ride, with good clean tarmac. I continued cross the A5 heading to Denbigh, another great road a little less challenging.
The road surface on this B road is better than any A, B road or pavement in Cardiff City centre "pothole" capital of Wales.....
Technically you were outside of the national park at the beginning of your video but further along the B4407 at the turning for Penmachno you were inside it. Anyone visiting please watch out for sheep as they do roam free and often lie on the roads over the moors hence the cattle grids.. and hitting one at 80 would be quite messy.
👀👍👍👍☠🌚🇬🇧

As a Welsh biker resident in North Wales..If you think that's a good road you want to try the A4059 turn off from the A4070 ..that's the best bit of road in Wales 🏴🏍
B4391 for me, all day long. 👍
Then onto Festiniog and then down into Betws and upto the Llanberis pass (top to bottom)then over the Electric Mountain and along the Ogwen Valley then past Mount Tryfan at the head of the valley and to Capel Curig is the most amazing loop....wow - what aride.
And the Adnams brewery 😁 🍺
Hi, U need a attractive TH-cam thumbnail designer to grow your views?
Do you dislike cyclists and the national speed limit is 60 mph.
Yes, can't stand the sanctimonious twats. And the national speed limit is whatever I can get away with 😂
No I hate inconsiderate cyclists and the speed limit is there tobe broken In my opinion where it’s safe
You should try the B4406 which is just off that road to the left. It’s the same sort of road but with much better scenery.
You should have stopped at the Applecross Inn for a coffee and picture- you can look over the sea to Skye on a good day.
Rain, in Scotland, what are the odds ;-)
I like a road that tests the suspension 🙂
Great video thanks for sharing 😀
That is a cracking road, ridden it many times almost always wet. You might have gone to Lochinver this is a good little run from that road and has a famous world class pie shop and restaurant, well worth a visit.
