    Does this technique apply to dwarf fig trees (brown turkey and Chicago figs)?

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes. Eventually all fig rootstocks fill out and it has to be done for potted figs. If the roots are very constricted then absolutely I would do this. In general, my Black Madeira does not fill out its roots like a Desert King fig but eventually after a while it will. Hope this helps :)

      Thanks for the reply! I have another question if I prune the bottom branches on this Chicago Hardy Dwarf Fig , will the tree get new growth on top.

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@joseolmeda9567 Its possible for sure, as the energy will focus there due to apical dominance, which means the tall points will get the most growth hormone. But in general, buds will usually appear right below the cuts you make. Watch my pruning video to see how figs grow in regards to pruning. So I always cut to a point where below I would like a scaffold (bud) to develop. But its not always the case. sometimes you'll get suckering growth from the bottom of the plant regardless of how you prune. You can take them off, and develop the main tree or cut down the entire tree and let the new suckers develop into new trees. It depends in my opinion where you live and how confident you are with how likely you know the growth to come back strong. In California I know people prune all the way down. But in places like Michigan, Chicago, etc that is dangerous because the tree can die over winter. Hope this philosophy helps.

    How does this go in Clay soil ?

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Clay soil from my understanding comes in different levels of compaction so it will vary. But what will make a huge difference for clay based substrates is how moist it is. If its moist, clay expands very well allowing for easy work with tools like this. On hardpan clays, with very little moisture in summer, I think this will be would a challenge.

    my brown turkey has about 20 trunks. i can't say they have scaffolds til much higher. so many limbs are not upright. my favorite trunk was central and vertical and up and died and fell over. lots of huge fruit, rarely ripens. doesn't taste that great. got rust this year. lazy sprayer. clearly i don't know what i am doing. thanks for the vid. i am going to cut every one of the trunks back and try to remove the horizontal limbs. i would love a single trunk, but it's gotten ahead of me. recs to improve ripening and flavor? tia.

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for your comment! :) It sounds like your tree is a mature one and gone through a lot of growth cycles. In this situation it is best to do a rejuvenation prune in my opinion. That is a video I have yet to cover but basically you'd be making some huge cuts to restart the tree. You can absolutely still prune back to a single trunk but the recovery will be slow after, but it should bounce back if all other aspects of tree care are in place.

      Thank you! :) I'd love to make a video about it in the future. Last year the summer was an El Nino and the heat wasn't much of a problem. From my experience, as long as the fig gets water it seems to not care about heat. If the pot is white also its a game changer however white pots are quite expensive so I just use the cheaper black ones.

    (I'm a complete novice) I seem to be better placed than some with regard air layering and/or taking cuttings from figtrees?. my 60 year old, very disciplined, meticulously pruned 15 feet wide by 6/7 feet high (when pruned) fig tree has in recent months produced many suckers, which notionally: lend themselves to the easy production of new trees with minimal effort? I glean new ideas from every video I watch, this would appear to be one of the shorter better Vids; congratulations, and thank you. • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for watching! :) Yes you are correct. A majority of the breba is gone for this tree with this method, and I understand Desert King can be pruned differently especially for colder climates. I personally just take back all my potted fig trees like this, and focus on the maincrop (aka new growth). I have in inground figs that I forgot to prune, and they will be good breba for me, and even then I do not worry about those too much because the birds get them before me haha.

    Using a ranspanent plastic sheet to wrap the soil around the stem instead of the black brackets not only saves money but also allows you to see through if there're new roots. If you wrap another layer outside it using kitchen foil, it can keep the moist longer and the temperature more stable. If you touch and feel the wrapping ball is firm, it means enough roots are formed.

      @QualityGardener 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Thank you for watching! In Holland, it is much colder than here in Australia, I would recommend waiting until spring to do this procedure. The Container Mix in this video consists of the following: 1 25 Liter bag of Composted Pine Bark which equaled 5 parts. 2 parts of coarse Peat Moss, and then 1 part of coarse Perlite. The latter two should be quite easy to find, but you will need to do research on a similar product for the composted pine bark. I used a 70L wheelbarrow to mix everything. The pot was originally in 28L of soil mix, so I only needed to make roughly another 30 Liters. All the best!

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Near the base of trunk, there will be larger roots naturally and I avoid those ones, so I just pulled the roots near the edge of the pot. Unfortunately its the only downside to this fertilizer method, but in my honest opinion, its fine to do to very small fibrous feeder roots, just don't tackle the larger ones. The tree that I did this to is now budding for spring so it won't harm the tree. All the best!

Its something I've picked up on last year. The more water, and nitrogen I pump into the plant, the larger the fruits seem to be. Absolutely! I still love using my digging spade. But I think this tool can be great for some people who have injuries. Also I have some compacted clay covered in buffalo grass and this tool is great for opening up the hole to begin with. Thank you for watching! 😊

      @@QualityGardener yeah I’m just an idiot busting on u because u have a really cool accent. If u want to experiment add Biochar and humic acid to fill the holes in ur heavy clay. I have sticky clay soil as we live in a large river floodplain. Since I’ve been drilling holes and using Biochar and humic acid to push into the soul profile over the years my compaction has all but disappeared. Also adding gypsum helps clay form a colloidal but I fear adding too much gypsum because of getting some micronutrients locked up. I’ve seen the biggest improvement using Biochar with straight up fulvic acid. The area has become incredibly improved and the turf in that area seems to handle the summer heat stress far better than other areas. Check out Kelp4less in the US. I believe they ship internationally. One of the best and cheapest sources of some incredible organic products. Finally I’ve been top dressing some other areas with locally sourced quality worm castings. Definitely seeing improvement there and it’s actually attracting worms to the area to do the aeration for me 😆

    Can you air layer after cutting the branch off?

    Is it best to air layer a fig tree that has two trunks like the one you have? I just got my first fig tree ever… Italian Red Sicilian and it’s pretty tall, about 5-6 feet. I’m afraid to air layer it and kill it.

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely! Actually if you've seen my pruning video for figs in containers, I always recommend to make your tree a single trunk first, so it would yes it would be a great air layer potential, and Red Sicilian is an amazing fig from what I've seen :)! Just note that the larger branches take more time to root, and in return they give you a very high success rate because of larger wood having more energy. So with that being said, I wouldn't do this in fall, especially in a colder climate. I try to do my air layers as the fig tree has woken up in early spring when the tree has a lot more growth hormone. That will give you the best success rate. Hope this helps and thank you for watching :)!

    How about other growers using a mixture instead of composted pine bark they use vermicompost that has a lot of nutrients, will it change the amount of added fertilizers? Thanks💚

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can definitely customize this mix and change it around! But with Vermicompost because is very rich in nutrients and also expensive in bulk amounts, I would not use it primarily as a growing medium. Vermicompost / Worm castings have been shown to be the most effective when used in a mix at around 10-20% of the entire volume, and that's how I use mine when I include it in seed raising, and veggie growing mixes. You can always experiment though and note that not all worm castings / vermicast are equal. They are just very expensive to buy here where I am, and I find composted pine bark / similar products to be a lot cheaper to use as a bulk growing medium with much better drainage properties. Thank you for watching! :)

      @@QualityGardener Yes, thanks. Just collecting more info before I start growing some figs and blueberries on my rooftop. I just don't know where to buy cuttings or plants that ship internationally.

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@msprettyeve I actually use this mix for blueberries too, they absolutely love it because its an acidic base. I just don't use limestone for blueberries as they prefer more acidic soil. I would stay away from etsy if you are buying internationally because its quite risky. I don't know too much about figs in other countries other than America and Australia as that's where I've gained a majority of my information with figs. I would make an account on ourfigs website as they can tell you what figs would do best in your zone. Figaholics, Kremp, OFFthebeatenpathnursery are a couple highly reptuable american fig selling websites that do cuttings. I would start there if you're in the States! :)

      @@QualityGardener May I ask if how many times should we apply organic fertilizer to a first year potted figs? Thank you

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@msprettyeve I applied the organic slow release once in spring when trees are hungry, and then once when summer starts. So that's every 3 months. You can alternatively apply just chicken manure pellets every month and that also works great too and much easier.
