I will sell mine! Its broken in the dealer, and no time to fixe it. Im ged up. I will sell it and move to kawasaki. Royall enfield: you pay fou what you get! Never more!
@@jf300car6 what is actually broken? It would be very useful for everyone to know. By all accounts the engines themselves are pretty much bullet-proof. And I heard they were used on a drag strip and really hammered, without any problems. Without doubt the Royal Enfields do have a number ‘issues’ and I get your point. The main ones are 1. Burning out rectifiers due to the OEM daft position 2. poor quality electrical relays 3.speedometer wires fracturing due the hard plastic used, causing a fluctuating speedo needle or no speedo at all (it’s a £4 fix to replace the cable with something better), 4. Basic suspension 5. Poor finish on metal parts like brackets, wire guides. 6. Thin chromed parts. 7. A cheap and nasty EVAP system which in my case made me just about sell the bike as it wouldn’t start reliably. All cured once the Evap was ditched 8. Needs the fuel booster plug to even out low speed running 9. Sometimes ugly welds on the OEM exhaust system which is also very heavy indeed. 10. Not the best quality OEM brake pads. 11. Uncomfortable OEM seat 12. Poor quality switchgear. On the plus side…..the bike has ABS, a six speed gearbox, stainless spokes and alloy rims, EFI, a slipper clutch, excellent fuel consumption, fun to ride (although, in your case, you’re not riding it….you have my sympathy), allegedly bulletproof engine (there are examples that have done 50,000+ trouble-free miles). Braided stainless brake hoses. And…..as you’ve commented…it’s not an expensive bike. And it is a nice, fun ride! I receive lots of emails from people all over the world and, apart from the dreaded RR problem, people have covered tens of thousands of miles without major issues. But I do get your point. I have a 25 year old Honda Pan-European ST1100 and the build quality, engineering, ABS, traction control, design, power and reliability are superior to a modern RE, love them as I do. One has to be realistic. They’re a ‘budget’ bike…..but about £750 sorts everything out permanently, so it’s still a bike for under £6,000. That’s a price point that is unachievable from a Japanese manufacturer. I suppose time will tell re the longevity of the RE’s. Please do share what’s wrong with your bike….it all adds to the collective knowledge base….. and commiserations on your bike being out of action!
Started my gt yesterday, first time for months,no charging at all, started first press, lithium ion

@@internetpolification thank for the information 💙
Thoroughly enjoyed that story James. A very Merry Christmas to you and yours. Very tempting to name (and shame) the dealer and their 'mechanic'. Makes me wonder what the RE Warranty is worth as I've come across a few horror stories usually relating to the MotoGB years. Will RE be better? This story concerns a dealer of course - how much better had they done the job properly in the first place.
@@richardmarshall9309 lol. A bit of fun. The owner of the bike is relieved he can get it back to normal! Nobody so far has picked up on the “a warning to the curious”….the title of a BBC ‘ghost story for christmas’………. Lol
Lovely bikes but this is not the first time on U Tube that a 'main dealer' representing RE lets the team down. Thinking of changing my bike next year but will stick with Honda, can't afford horror stories anytime of the year never mind Chrisrmas. Yes a happy ending but really in 2024 from a main dealer (or any other for that matter)?
Yes, the RE is a budget-friendly bike. It’s very open to improvement with better components and it doesn’t cost much to do. Love the bike as I do, it’s not in the same league as a Japanese, to be perfectly honest about it. But then it’s much less costly and it has been fun tweaking mine and improving it.
Now imagine the owner had zero technical acumen or confidence / ability to enquire. They'd be totally screwed. We tend assume dealers are on our side at our peril.
The Channel you refer to is Old School ADV Rider, I for one WILL listen to anything he has to say and find his technical knowledge and mechanical prowess quite a refreshing oasis of sanity in the sand dunes of TH-cam B/S. Anyway pleased you have it sorted to your satisfaction 👍
Yes, the more info that’s out there, the better. That’s not where I saw the cutting of the wires on the OEM wiring harness though. I’m not a devotee of damaging OEM wiring harnesses….I’ve seen such a lot of it on the renovations I’ve done but..horses for courses, as they say
name the dealer ,, or this is not helpful ; happy christmas ;;
Better not…….
@@internetpolification ok, best of luck ,
Courtesy of the dealership rather than Royal Enfield.
I remember the old Triumphs had the zener diode in a big aluminum heat sink mounted under the steering head.
I went with 25 year old HD with 7 previous owners. The idea of a few wires is very appealing. I wouldn't know where to start apart from it was given a 12 month mot and described as excellent condition with a full service history. I figured it would take 2 years and £3k to sort, halfway there and looking realistic. We all have our own standards, which can be a long way apart. Didn't think to ask if there were threads in the sump for the drain plug and they forgot to mention it. The list is 4 pages so I'll leave it there. Didn't find anything painted gold but I haven't taken the cylinder heads off so there is still time.
Didn't follow your comment about the engine sump plug, however, I own 2 HD Ironheads and have only tried to undo one of them. It stripped the thread...so retapped it and put oversize plug in with liquid metal (I had earlier drilled n tapped the plug for a small bolt in case i need to check for metal flakes) and now leave them alone. Oil change is by running them until warm, undoing the return from the tank, running bike until tank gets to about a quarter full, then putting in fresh oil slowly until clean oil comes out of the return pipe. Turn off engine and fill tank to correct level. There are quite a few comments around about not touching sump plug....hope this may be of interest....
@kelvinbolton9395 it's a twin cam dyna without an oil tank. I made a 13.2mm 20 tpi tap and matching plug with a magnet from EN8. The correct fix is to replace the sump and don't let anyone touch it that doesn't know how expensive cheap is. The correct size viton O ring, not a bag of silicone allsorts.
@@theodavies8754 sorry.....wasn't trying to be a smart arse dude...it's just an easy mistake to make n it appears not everyone knows....sounds like you're sorted though..my Ironheads are a 1975 and 1984 n they throw up lots of interesting problems due to age and previous owners.....ho hum....
@@kelvinbolton9395 no worries, the UK is full of people who think Harley can't make a hex head that fits any of their metric Allen keys. I have a factory WS manual and a diploma in horology. If Honda made a Harley it would be like my 1999 FXDL. I had a 1995 evo FXDL but I couldn't make it fit in with family life. I bought a new 883 hugger in 1988 but the tank range didn't work out.
Hi James, I'm wondering how much of that is contaminated fuel and how much down to a poor quality filter degrading?
My bet is bad fuel these days
@@internetpolification Fair comment. :)
Is the battery being charged now after the update or are Richard wishing a new battery for Christmas?
lol…… the fourth battery? No, apparently all is well!!
hmm.. current royal enfield products are tempting but not yet fully tried and tested i suppose, i had an afternoon's test ride of the 650 cafe racer version, what surprised me is how easily the rev pointer touched into the red zone, japanese bikes i have owned go nowhere near that area on a daily basis.
I suppose going into the red zone means time to change gear
@@internetpolification yes, although i wouldn't say that i was a spirited rider particularly - i spoke to an owner about this, he changed the pipes so get more of a feel for gear change necessity. the thing is i wouldn't want to be watching guages on standard uk roads/limits and that put me off.
You’d get the feel of it. Red-lining is easier in the lower gears, of course. It’s just a question of getting used to it. When I red-lined once by accident in first, I felt there was a rev limiter there to stop engine destruction…….
And I thought I had been worked over by a Greek Enfield dealer! At least they didn't go straight to the battery. Good old Ebenezer saved the day with the extension leads and correct plugs. 20,000 miles later still good! Merry Christmas all.
@@stevegibson2620 lol. Great news re the mileage and all going well, Steve!
We don't seem to have these rectifier/regulator problems much in Australia. Perhaps it's something to do with your appalling damp conditions? My interceptor goes out in the rain but no problems yet. I have encountered poor service from dealers for all of my 50 years riding. They lie, fail to deliver and display great incompetence. As a skilled tradesman toolmaker, I have always done my own service and repairs as I am the only mechanic I can trust. My enfield has never been back to the dealer since purchase any problems, I'll fix it myself thanks. Have a great Xmas and holiday season, thanks for the channel.
@@brianmcleod4815 in fact, you do! I’ve sent at least 50 re-location kits to Oz and NZ, usually in response to burned out RR’s. I’ve received many emails from your compatriots about this exact problem,
The location of the R/R unit collects more wet, gritty, oily crap than you'd think possible here in the UK at least.
@ it’s a worldwide problem……
At about 3000 miles my bike started feeling a bit lethargic from 3 to 4000 revs so i took the filter off and gave it a good shake and a few taps on the work bench and when i tipped it up to drain it there was what looked liked a yellowy slurry coming out. When it dried it was powdery like paint powder, so i wonder if spray has got in tank at factory? A new filter seemed to cure it. Still has an slightly unstable idle as usual though, they seem to vary a bit, bike to bike.
I believe as of yesterday... the guy in Bulgaria, due to health issues... retired posting and all his bikes are for sale... 😎
@@motormikeb1047 that’s a shame. I’m sure I and everyone else wish him well.
Good timing for me, as the tank is off to check the tappet adjustments at 12,000 miles, so might as well replace the fuel filter as well.
That Dealership sounds Dodgy or Incompetent. You could send away to India for a Rectifier Regulator in 2-3weeks.His bike in the shop for 2weeks.Glad it worked out & sorted especially for holiday sesson.Funny how original block connector was tucked away.
@@ruahinesrider at least they didn’t snip the 4 pin block off!
One thing I learned from previous experience is that when you replace the tank, make sure that the fuel line connector is pushed fully home until you feel a click. I didn't, and it took a year for the pipe to work loose & empty the tank in the middle of a journey.
Well Ebenezer. That certainly could have been a horror story. So glad it had a happy ending. Wishing all a very happy Christmas.
Happy Christmas James And a Many Mod New Year……

Very informative video James, you have always stated plug & play way to go. Glad Richard is able to have a better Christmas knowing his bike is redeemed from the horror story you highlighted. Happy Christmas to everyone 👍
A true horror story! Thankfully the butchery was found & ‘rectified’ before an issue surfaced. Good old Ebenezer Slick for providing the long term solution. We can now relax & hopefully all enjoy a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. Have a good un, James, looking forward to next year’s offerings.
Have a good Xmas & New Year
Hi James looks like a good plan. I’m hoping that we’re not going to get that cold this winter but who knows? The weather people haven’t got a clue. Have a great Christmas. See you on the flip side.
Just a thought , you cant charge lithium battery below 2 degrees (that may be wrong but you dont charge when its cold )or it kills them , not a lot of good on a bike
A lithium battery isn’t any good on a bike? Is that what you’re saying? I’ve had them on several bikes for years without any problems
@@internetpolification no they work great but they cant be charged when cold
Great idea James has to improve insulation from cold👍
A bit late but I thought what the heck: I like the daddy cooler kit because I won't need to use a ruler. It's pretty much just plug & play and I like it that way. Changing AC into DC is the rectifier's mission, I just need to decide on its new position. Do I put it under the triple tree or will under the oil cooler suit me? New brackets, stainless steel bolts and slick new cables will James send me. Now that it's in a cooler place the voltage remains at a steady pace. Yep, I think I'm in the right place. The daddy cooler kit is just right for me!
@@ridingwithhg A very nice poem there, Henry. However, the winner of my little competition received their prize of a cable kit a few weeks ago!
Thank you mate.
@@atultgeorge6825 you’re welcome!
Very interesting and thanks for sharing. I have a new fuel filter to install along with other bits (regrec relocation kit from you included) when I can bring myself to park it up for a few days.
Thanks James
What was the reason for fitting a new filter? Age or mileage?
The purpose of a fuel filter is to remove contaminants, sediment, rust, and impurities from fuel before it enters the engine. This prevents damage to the engine and other components. RE Manuel states every 15000 miles, James has only 8000 & is in poor condition. If it gets to contaminated then it could block fuel flow causing bike to stop even at speed. Hopefully not whilst on the middle lane of a motorway.
@@martinowl both, really.
Didn’t realise it had a specified replacement age. Obviously if you do check its condition prior to the mileage stated & it looks poor, then defo a change is needed. 👍
@ it’s a destructive test though. Unfortunately, it’s a black plastic housing so it’s impossible to see is inside it without sawing the end off!
Nice.
Well Thank You James. I will soon be doing my second valve check/adjustment at 12K miles. I will be sure to order me up a few fuel filters on Ebay today so I have one at the ready. DanO
@@danoconner9336 definitely worth doing, I’d say. I can’t believe how bad my filter was!
Would be interesting to find out if there's a suitable aftermarket replacement that could be disassembled and cleaned, that's supposed to be replaced entirely...
@ yes. The only thing is that it would need a shoulder on the inlet and outlet and be exactly the correct diameter for the pipe retaining clip….
Great video James, old paper filter looks bad, could be a bike stopper. My new fuel filter arrived today so will be fitting tomorrow. As always your channel addresses issues that need to be sorted 👍
Once again thank you for the heads up, I have never learned so much about a particular model of a motorcycle in a short amount of time because of James youtube channel.I have been riding a motorcycle for 40 years and learned most by trial and error but this channel has kept me on the road with peace of mind. @@theoldhobbit3640 the RR’s burn out and fail when in the OEM position….. it’s an extremely common fault with these bikes. Some owners were on their third and fourth RR’s in under 10,000 miles. The record is 4 RR’s in 1700km! Relocating means a cooler-running RR, out of the way of road muck which blocks the cooling fins.
